Hi, I am a Lt. grade 3 and wanna buy a new ship, a bigger one. Can I do that? How and where? How many credits do I need? A light cruiser is so weak tyhat many missions are simply too difficult!
thanks!

You will get a "free" new ship when you reach a new rank, in your case Lt. Commander, which requires 10 ranks at Lt.
You can buy a new one before then I think, but it's like 20,000 credits (I believe).

If he buys another ship before getting promoted the only choices he will have are the other light cruisers. To the OP, when you get and spend enough points to be promoted(Lt 11) you will get a message from Admiral Quinn. After talking to him you will get a token and a short promotion mission during which you will learn how to get a new, higher level ship. The first ship of each rank level is free, all you need is the token from Quinn. You can buy other ships but are limited to only those available to your rank.

Thanks people, it's good to know I just have to wait! So, at the beginning, which kind of mission is better to do? I went through the Volanis cluster etc... but tougher missions are just too though!

Tougher missions give you more skill points. And that is what you need to rank up. Do all the Admiral Quinn missions and the Commander Sulu patrol missions. I found myself able to level up at a pretty healthy pace doing that.
Once you get to LT8, start looking into which type of ship you are going to want. It'll affect how you play the game for the remainder.
Sorry to say, but if anything beyond the Delta Volanis cluster is 'too tough', it might be the wrong game for you, or you are doing something wrong. I have a friend who never played any MMO before, and she had no trouble doing the Lt. missions on her own.

It might help if you look for a fleet dedicated to help new players. If its just you doing something wrong, more experienced players might get you on the right track. I frequently see RAs and Captains at Sol offering help.

If he is complaining about the Ground missions, he is quite right. Until you get some decent equipment and a full crew, the ground exploration missions can be very rough when you have to fight NPCs. The Klingon spawns with a Swordmaster are very tough.
To the OP: Keep at it. Things do get much better. Work towards getting a balanced crew.
hello all just got first promosion t lc went to get my new ship picked criuser did did all other bits beemed to ship and discoverd that im useing the starter ship how do i get the new one?

You have to go to the dockmaster. Once there, select your new ship and click on the button "Set as Current"

I agree on that. My very first mission in Delta Volanis was to defeat 5 Klingon mobs. I had no EC to buy better weapons or shields and basically no real clue what I was doing.
Do some of the story missions first (what Quinn gives you, and the 'Patrol the ... sector' from Sulu), they give you some money and skill points for your BOs, and that makes your life easier in the clusters. There are vendors in the room with the tailor selling weapons and kits you can afford, or look at the exchange. With the new price sorting option, you should find some very cheap weapons (under 100 EC).
Seeing you took a cruiser, I assume you are engineer. If the Klingons are your problem - get a mine barrier kit and weapons with knockback (my personal fave are high density rifles), keeps the Klingons at distance and if they can't melee you, your shields actually offer protection.
Another bit of advice for Ground Combat for beginners, DO NOT OPEN WITH AN AOE attack. You will pick up a lot of aggro which will be more than you can handle. Hold off from using you AoE attacks. Open up with a single target attack or a debuff (Weapon Malfunction Tricorder Scan, etc) and let you BOs open fire. Once the aggro is nicely spread, THEN cut loose with your AoEs.
To keep it short: Spread the aggro. You BO's belive it own not are smart enough to handle combat on their own for a period of time. If you aren't tactical captain, make the most of your Captain and Kit powers. You have the luxury of waiting for targets of opportunity. And I ususually work on taking out the riff-raff (lower tier) NPC's. In mass, the minions are worse than a few upper tier NPCs (i.e. Lts, and Bosses).

This is the strategy I use. I select the closest target and tell my BOffs to attack it. I then back off until I am personally in danger or until I see the strongest guy being ignored by my Boffs though he is all but dead. I never go in phasers blazing.
Also, stay near a place you can jump behind for three seconds. That's how long it takes to reset your shields. Once you level up, those Klingons will fall quickly. I took my Galaxy through one of the Sulu exploration missions I forgot and the Klingons dropped like flies.
For Klingons, it also helps to remember: Kill the Targ Handler first. He spawns targs and if they happen to be the closest target, your BOs may focus on them and make the fight longer and harder than neccessary.

This really helped me out as well, I thought that you get bigger better ships later on, but I wasn't sure. Do you get to keep the name of you ship you started the game with??
The last post in this thread was over 2 years ago. Please start a new thread if the last post was over 30 days old as the information is likely to be out of date. And in fact in this case, things have changed a little bit from when this conversation first happened.

Not a good idea to necro due to outdated information, but if you want to reuse the name of your first ship, then you have to decommission it. There can only be one Enterprise, but you could name them Enterprise-A, Enterprise-B, etc. or decommission your first Enterprise, then name your new ship Enterprise. I am using Enterprise as an example, but you can use whatever you want.
hey i am a liutenet 6 and i would like to get a better ship what rank would you have to be to be 1 rank ahead luitenent comander THANKS:D
Hey! they will shut down this thread, its too old, you should not post in threads over a month or two old.
You get a new ship at 10, 20, 30, and 40. After that you have to buy them, either with hard-earned in game resources or real money. 10 may require completion of a mission to unlock, the rest are pure level based.

To clarify the first part of what the OP said, basically it is against forum rules to post in a thread that has been inactive for more than 30 days, they actually prefer that you create a new one.
I was able to get to vice admeral in less then a year. You need to do the story missions and then the foudery missions if you need more expericance. Also like someone said do the partol system missions along with other ones for partol.

Perhaps you're right...
Do you still have your difficulty on Normal? If you cranked it up, crank it back down until you get the feel of the game.
And what ArievDhien said.
