The ability to play AS your Bridge Officers

I was just thinking, I've spent just as much time customizing my BO's as I have on my main avatar. Wouldn't it be possible to implement some feature where you can assume DIRECT control over your BO's on a mission, or just in general---essentially becoming the BO from a control perspective?

It would be great to play as my liberated borg BO for example. This could easily be implemented for ground missions. It could even be implemented when beaming down to a starbase, to show off some of those BO's that other players rarely get to see.

Anyone like this idea?

I think in the long run if the Devs get caught up on some of the content they are working on, this could be a useful immersion tool for players to develop "Backgrounds" as well as to further create and attachment not only to their own Captain and ship but their BO's

I think in the interim though, if they introduced missions that used our BO's as a focal point for the Genesis mission generator it would be a good start.

    Missions to:

    Rescue a randomly kidnapped/captured BO
    -on an enemy ship
-on an away mission to a planet surface
-in a detention block in a base

    by

    -enemy factions
    -irrate colonists or terrorists
    -alien race looking to study
    -mad scientists

Find a cure for a BO that's been infected by some illness

Rescue them from some temporal rift by manipulating the ships systems/ sensors

I think those mission ideas are excellent.

and there's no reason why they couldn't be combined with my concept. For instance, you: the captain of the ship, get kidnapped and you have to lead the away team playing as one of your bridge officers to get the captain back.

Now that's an awesome idea. It's one thing to hear "the Borg are kidnapping random unnamed colonists" and another to hear "our friend Lt. Sovek was beamed off the ship by the Borg, we need to rescue him!" Instead of feeling "ho hum, another world to save, bleh", we'd be thinking "NO! How dare those Borg scum take my engineer! They'll pay for this!" Anything to make the missions more immersive and personal would be neat.

I'm sure some people would complain that "They took my boff with the most useful skill", but there are dozens of examples in Trek when a crew member was taken and the crew had to get them back with much difficulty. STO needs missions that feel more personally important.

I agree with this completely. Anything that adds more of an attachment to our BO's really would add to the experience. And you would be left somewhat hobbled, without that officer's space/ground abilities, until you recovered them. Talk about some incentive to get back my tactical officer---not only did I like the guy, but I need my high-yield torpedo ability back!

Not only would it make missions more "personal" as you said, but it would be very much in-line with episode plots. If the pakleds captured my chief engineer and started phasering him right in front of me...I would be livid!

    pure genius. :D

Suddenly I feel the need to fire all my bridge officers. And replace them with Vulcan women.

Because every few years...my bridge will become Vulcan Love Slave 2: Kinky Katra Girls

A long time ago, we specifically pointed out a desire to a) select our "First Officer" and b) play as them for Away Missions and so on on occasion.

I recall the Devs stating they liked the idea and would consider it, though I can;t be sure if anything more about it was said regarding it being something they would actually do- just consider doing.

That said, yes, I want to pick, promote, and play as my First Officer.

My First Officer should be able to don a Kit at all times, and when played by me, have a second weapon. When incapacitated, if my First is present on the mission, I should be able to take them over as a third option, not just respawn/cry help. Lastly, I would want to be able to, at any time they are present with me, switch between my Captain and my First Officer, similar to single-player RPGs where you can bounce from party member to party member (though keeping it only the First Officer and the Captain).

An interesting secondary thought- when assisting someone on a ground mission much, much lower than me, I should be able to select any non-ensign from my bridge crew who's level is appropriate for the mission and being them along, kitless, in addition to or instead of the option to "exemplar" to the person I'm aiding (to use a CoH term).
