Is it actually possible for Cryptic to get these designs that people find on the web and post here? Or is there some kind of legal/licensing thing?
All designs have to be approved by CBS and I'm pretty sure any fan designs can not be used without legal documents been signed by the person who designed the ship, due to possable copyright infringements and the like.

That's what I thought.
As much as I'd enjoy it (and I would, very much, enjoy it), I wonder if Cryptic could actually pull it off.

Cryptic could offer any and all models to CBS for consideration. If CBS said that it would be acceptable then it would be up to Cryptic and the modeller to decide what, if any, remuneration and credit was received and up to the modeller and the image creator to decide how such credit is split.
For example if I make a model of the Kelvin ( which I may be doing this week ) Cryptic could take it to CBS who in turn could say "you can use that" or "you can't use that, we can't license JJtrek"
If it was acceptable to the game ( and in a format directly compatible ) then all Cryptic would have to do is pay me. If CBS accept anything canon in game it's because they own the rights to it.

There's some kind of legal licensing thing. Imagine if you decided to create a story. And you posted it on your web site. And I took that story and published it in my comic book. And got money for it.
That's ... frowned upon.
Well change the variables to be ... someone went and designed their own klingon battleship.
Cryptic can't go and take that design. That's ... frowned upon.

Cryptic has three ship designers on staff.
My experience as a freelance illustrator doing work for hire ... leads me to believe that ... this is not something that will be successful.

hehe ton better then I could do
That is one cool ship, beats the ones we currently have.
i'm not really suited to judge klink designs though.
[sarcasm]It already looks better than most of the defective models in game.[/sarcasm]

this looks like a mix of Ferengi and Cardassian Designs... and what looks Cardassian looks like SGU's Destiny:
