meh anything is possible... lets say the undine have been blowing up the borg again... maybe they wanna change stratedgys completly and have loads of lucutos type borgs leading em into battle.. of course the undine will kick ya metalic arses
Well thats an idea however theres no reason we can't play proper Borg in my opinion. We could fly any ship that already exists in the game but with Borg technology showing on the hull.
It would change the gameplay a lot where all the other factions won't.
Romulans are just going to be Klingons with different skins.
The federation should just take all of it's stealth-ed ships. Because they are canon. Because we are in the future. Make alliances with all the races in Star Trek. Which is canon. Just destroy the much weaker Borg. Who still threaten to destroy and enslave billions. That would be the best solution to the Borg problem. The Borg is no longer a threat. We are at peace. Game over.
Since we are in the future, the Borg could start de-assimilating.
problem solved.
i've said it before and i'll say it again, I don't care if Cryptic comes up with an ingenious way to make Borg playable in a gameplay and canon sense, it would still be utterly ridiculous and I would be quitting.
So the playable Borg would then be "Liberated Borg"?
Actually, that could be interesting. A bunch of Liberated Borg who are trying to find their own independent place in the universe. It'd also be an excellent opportunity for Cryptic to offer the Liberated Borg playable race as a C-Store item. In essence, you could choose to play a Liberated Borg in the "Liberated Borg" new faction, but also buy the Liberated Borg to play it as a part of the Federation, just like we can purchase Klingons for our Federation characters. That actually makes a lot of sense to me and could prove interesting and profitable from both sides of the fence.
While driving off the lifetime subscribers. Who got their exclusive Liberated Borg. For taking a chance on the game. I am all for them putting the Liberated Borg in the C-store. If they can prove they pre-ordered the game. Also Cryptic selling it for 249.99 would be fair.
The only way i see it working is if they are liberated borg, but that begs the question if they are liberated wouldn't they just want to have all their cyborg parts removed as much as possible like picard or 7 of 9?
Federation Doctor: "Hey borg, now that you have free will and all we're more then happy to remove all your implants if you like."
Liberated Borg: "Nah, that's ok, if it's all the same to you i'd prefer to keep peeing motor oil"
Also wouldn't they have to maintain some sort of collective to be able to run their ships? That would be like nelson mandella taking up residency in that prison cell after he was released.
With free will being restored there's still the matter of Borg who are dicks, what's to stop some selfish or greedy borg from just reprogramming me and my newly liberated chums while we're all jacked in trying to fly our ship around ?
Also where in the known universe are these guys gonna be permitted to just roam freely without people freaking out and throwing everything they have at them?
"Sir we're receiving a hail from a ship claiming to be full of liberated borg"
Billions of Borg becoming independent is speculation. It was never established via canon what the overall impact from the events in "Endgame" to the Borg was. For all anyone knows, they have since rebuilt their transwarp hubs and are back to business as usual.
You can't say the Queen dying in "Endgame" leads to billions of Borg becoming Independent. She dies in "First Contact" too (and technically, she died in "Best of Both Worlds" too), yet it had no visible impact on the Collective as a whole.
...I am all for them putting the Liberated Borg in the C-store. If they can prove they pre-ordered the game. Also Cryptic selling it for 249.99 would be fair.
Wow... I don't know about you, but as far as I'm concerned, paying less than $300 for the Lifetime Subscription was the incentive to purchase it, not the exclusivity of the Liberated Borg playable "race". I'm quite willing to part with the illusion of exclusivity of the Liberated Borg playable "race" if it means more overall profit to Cryptic coming directly from STO subscribers.
The only way i see it working is if they are liberated borg, but that begs the question if they are liberated wouldn't they just want to have all their cyborg parts removed as much as possible like picard or 7 of 9?
To me, being liberated actually does mean you're free to choose your own destiny and if my alter-ego wishes to live with implants so that he/she may be able to find out what it means to merge biologic and cybernetic organs into one body, that just may be a new wonderful life form to explore...

Thats why I get a good chuckle at all the "liberated" Borg running around with cybernetic devices. My liberated Borg look normal. They are...well, liberated. As to a playable faction, no way. 1, The borg as a faction are not individuals or liberated. and of course if the faction was released, next would be QQ please undine? Honestly, playable factions needs to stick to normal factions. Put the Maquis in, Romulan, Cardassian, even Dominion but leave Borg exclusive or refund a substantial part of the $240 we all paid.
Seriously, its my opinion take it or leave it. And you well know I am right about Undine being next if Borg is made as a full playable faction.
Not that I actually *want* Borg or Undine to become playable factions, but I definitely do not feel any entitlement to exclusivity towards Liberated Borgs as playable characters by those who did not buy a Lifetime Subscription before the game launched.
Having read Star Trek :: Needs of the Many, I can definitely see how Cryptic can get away with making both a Liberated Borg and an Undine factions. The Undine are already described as a group of different factions, and the inclusion of Klingons as a playable race participating in the Federation faction already sets the precedence for a Liberated Borg faction, and the addition of Liberated Borg to the C-Store.
I don't have to play either faction, of course, but I also will not oppose their addition for the benefit of those who may wish them added. That's my opinion.
The only way i see it working is if they are liberated borg, but that begs the question if they are liberated wouldn't they just want to have all their cyborg parts removed as much as possible like picard or 7 of 9?
At the moment, I can't see Collective Borg being a playable faction. Maybe someone can think of an idea that will work, but as I said, I currently don't have any plausible ideas.
As for Liberated Borg wanting their implants removed, I don't see everyone wanting to do that. Picard most likely would for several reasons: his personality, he wasn't Borg very long, his implants were not very invasive. But if you were left mostly robotic, like the Queen in First Contact, or half-robotic, with replaced limbs, etc.? In these cases, it wouldn't really matter what your desire is, you are missing organic parts that cannot be replaced.
Then there is the psychological aspect. What if you had non-invasive implants like Picard but were in the Collective for a decade or two? Putting being used to a collective mind aside, you would still have to deal with the fact that your implants provide "powers" that you have become accustomed too, such as enhanced strength, enhanced vision, enhanced healing, neural interface to built-in personal weapons and shields, etc. Are you going to be able to give these "powers" up, and be able to handle not having them after having had them for so long? I would say most would be addicted to the power and not be able or want to give the power up.

I just think selling would fracture the community. I think a lot of lifetime subscribers would feel betrayed and lied too. If they sold the Liberated Borg in the C-store. That this would force them to lose profits when the lifetime subscribers leave and make no more c-store purchases. Also giving much bad advertising in every game they played forever. Think of what NGE did for SOE. How many games have you been in where some one told how bad SOE was.
The liberated Borg was a reward and incentive to purchase the lifetime account before launch. Just like they shouldn't sell collector's edition bonuses in the C-store. Or STF rewards in the C-store. Or explorer gear in the C-store. It's not fair for the ones who did what it's takes to get the items. So if you didn't buy the lifetime account before or around the time of launch. You shouldn't get the Liberated Borg in the c-store. Without buying the lifetime account.
I purchased the pre-order LTS that came with the liberated borg...
Honestly I don't mind if they put them on the C-Store, for a reasonable price (not like they are "uber bad-TRIBBLE" or anything. I would hope that they would wait at least 6 months before making them available to others, since it was an exclusive item for people that were willing to take a chance before the game released.
I say this mainly because I want to see the TOS mirror universe uniforms on the C-Store, I wanted those uniforms from the start but I wasn't willing to buy an LTS to CO just to get them, but I am willing to wait 6 months for them to show up.
Heck, I would like to see all the exclusive items available on the C-Store eventually, I'm a big Trek fan, and I know a lot of other players are as well. Why keep so many popular items exclusive when everyone wants the uniform/ships/races of their favorite Trek series, that is just heartless.
But I really don't like the idea of a playable Borg faction, whether in a collective or liberated.
I could see an interesting mechanic coming out of this if the Borg were a playable faction.
Cryptic can do what they want in terms of canon regarding the Borg, I'm assuming they could say something like after the events of Endgame the Borg were left in chaos. The collective as a whole splintered and formed conglomerates to create smaller collectives but "something" happens where one faction of Borg don't recognise the other as being equal, causing factions to attempt to assimilate each other as each faction have most likely assimilated other cultures while separated from the true collective.
Anyway, if the Borg were a faction I think it would be a great mechanic/feeling if you as the player had no customisable avatar such as a captain.
You would fly a ship pretty much the same way you do now but on the ground you would just have a group of 5 drones that you can assign with their archetypes (tactical, engineer, science). If any of the drones are defeated, rather than "rezzing" the drone will self destruct/disintegrate and a new drone will beam down to take its place.

Just thought I would clarify that people who bought a LTS after the game was launched got zero "perks" and paid more than others did who pre-ordered the LTS in BETA.

I thought is was just for us that bought it in beta. I couldn't remember if it was offered a week or two after the game went live.

That's why you're against a Borg faction? Seriously? Your crummy little liberated Borg officer who isn't even a real Borg? A "Liberated" (I prefer Rogue) Borg Faction would be far superior to your watered-down, weakling of an excuse for a Borg. For one, they would actually still be Borg. They wouldn't remove their implants and run around in a Starfleet uniform. You can keep your neutered Borg. I'd rather have the real thing. As for not being part of the Collective, meh. Who wants to be a drone anyways? Most of us do that between 9 and 5 every day. Free will and individuality >>>> mindless obedience any day of the week.
So don't feel threatened. You can still have your used-to-be-Borg that's basically the same as everyone else's Starfleet character. I'd rather have a character that retains everything that's cool about the Borg and presents an interesting evolution to the Star Trek universe, than be anti-progressive just to avoid stepping on a few whiners' toes who apparently didn't think they were treated well enough when they received a $60 discount and 2 free character slots along with their exclusive playable race that violates canon far more than a faction of Borg who are disconnected from the hive mind.
