I just had a random question... with all the new games comming out that will be 3-D ready i was wondering if Cryptic was gonna have an update to support the 3-D movement into gaming? (i know all one has to do is get a 3-D video card and 3-D monitor to see everything on the computer in 3-D, but games who support it end up looking better lol ex. Just Cause 2, Metro 2033)
Currently you just need an Nvidia card with 3D stereoscopic ability and a pair of glasses ( of course a 3D monitor if you want too use one is optional but not needed )
Then you run a setup wizard. There are 3 electronic choices ( 3D emitter, 3D screen or 3D vision USB glasses ) and one non-electronic ( red and blue 3D glasses that we all have in a drawer somewhere.)
Unfortunately I can't tell you what STOs compatibility is with 3D as it won't show up in the list of installed games on the compatibility checklist (but that's a problem with the Nvidia 3D checking because many games I have won't show up and many games I've never played appear in the list as installed ) but for instance World of Warcraft has a compatibility rating of 'excellent' which is one grade below the perfect '3d vision ready ' ( which means the game has been made for 3D)
In fact there are very few games in the list that say 'not recommended' So I think it's a fair bet that with a 3D card ( any of the new Nvidia's from the 9800 on to be honest ) and a pair of cheap glasses you could get some 3D form STO
edit:// I found STO elsewhere in the list and it is marked as compatibility 'good'

The avatar glasses are polarized so not of use. I can't take a screenshot of the setup wizard ( print screen gives me the desktop behind instead of the wizard ) but it is definitely a 3 electronic option box and then a red/blue glasses option when setting up.
Here's the STO compatibility.

you can but those glasses on ebay in packs of 5 for a few bucks
nice im excited now lol and yea i've seen the wizard you are talking about (tired to use the Avatar glasses lol but... of course didnt work) but everyone was telling me i needed a monitor also to do it but u have no idea how happy this makes me lol it went from me spending about $600 to make my comp 3-D ready to $5? for those red and blue glasses lol sooo much appreciated
STO kinda sucks in 3D, the shadows don't display correctly which can be fixed by turning them off, however many of the art elements out in space appear at the wrong distance and completely ruin the 3d effect, it usually takes some special circumstances to get some good 3D in STO

Well if its already getting a "good" raitng on the Nvidia installer than i think it wouldnt take much to make it at lest the step under 3-D ready, but i really really hope that Cryptic has somthing up their sleeve for 3-D as its the next thing in everything Media lol

it says in the setup that objects can render at the wrong distance so you need to turn AA off, Shadows to low and Bloom off.
Hmm weird have computers with both 9600GT and 280 GTX and - although I can get other games to go into 3D mode just fine - I can't get it to work for STO. It doesn't start with it enabled (unlike other titles) and the keyboard toggle for 3D mode flat out doesn't work with it. Any suggestions on how to enable it?
BTW, I am using red/cyan stereoscopic glasses (like the old fashioned paper/plastic kind, but they happen to be a durable pair, a bit like like some wraparound sunglasses).
...im just gonna throw this out there... ur an ATI supporter right? lol and i apologize in advance if i am wrong it's just my observation
No i'm just experienced with nvidia's 3d suggestions as i've had nvidia 3d glasses since they've been available in this country (paid through the nose for it and it's still worth every cent) i'm not saying anything bad about them, it's just that they likely either don't do the testing first hand or do very rudimentary testing. i can go against quite a few of their suggestions and continue to get awesome 3d, bloom in sto for instance has never been a problem for me.

ooo ok lol well i dont have any experience with 3-D however i have expirence with Nvidia and ATI cards and i find Nvidia to be more reliable thats just bein my opinion lol but i want to get a 3-D set up sooo bad lol that with an EPOC Emotiv head set (control game with just thought and no keyboard, control ect.) would be a dream come true
here's a pic for the red/cyans that shows the space issue. i don't have a pair of red/cyans myself but if they give a similar effect to the shutter glasses the nebula should appear to render very close and make it difficult to focus on the ships.
to be fair on ground missions you can usually get some good 3D if you're in a cave with shadows turned off you're in for a treat and can ramp up the 3d to see a whole heap of depth on the characters. also in the demo player you can actually turn things like the nebulae off and it gives amazing 3D without them.

well its defiantly something i wanna try out and see the effects and its also something im really hoping that Cryptic is also thinking about because i have a feeling this market is going to EXPLODE the more games that are 3-D ready come out cuz i know that a graphic overhaul is probably highly unlikely lol

Well that sinks the idea no point getting your hopes up for it on this game, it was not designed for it original and are you aware of the image format they are using in this game for objects and backgrounds? It won't ever improve.

yeah that doesn't fix those problems at all, the nvidia suggestions tend to be sketchy at best.

I would think Starwars will be great in 3D
