Star Trek Online Console Ports Canceled
"Executive producer says they've had it running, but can't make the "final leap on the business side of things.""
Meaning it flopped so bad there isn't enough interest to make any money, amirite?
Still, props to the devs for dropping that pipe dream. Their resources would be wiser spent on trying to turn this game into a decent product, rather than making a horrible product more readily available.

On the other hand, STO has very little content or replayability that it could be bought, then tossed like most console games..
that nots true FFXI worked wonderfully on the PS2 and im really excited for FFXIV on PS3 in fact FFXI was probally the most challenging MMO i have ever played and the most enjoyable so far.... Square Enix knows how to make a game lol (more when it was Square Soft but still...) lol

That is the other problem with consoles. You are dealing with a closed platform where you have access dictated to you by the manufacturer. The PC is an open platform. This is also why I think PC gaming is going to make a strong comeback once Windows 7 gets rolling, the big publishers like Activision and EA are vacating the field for people who want to make innovative games to succeed.
I Highly doubt the "Strong come back" just because Big companies are putting the new DRM system pretty much in everygame which is doing way more harm than good... look at AC2... came out a month later it was cracked 100% for DLC levels and able to finish the game while the people who actually bought the game were stuck having to be connected to the internet constanly and having the comp watched and scaned every 5 seconds to makes sure they bought the game (i didnt care cuz i got it on PS3
This is what I 'love' about DRM. If you treat all your legitimate customers like criminals, then being one becomes more attractive just by virtue of not having to put up with the ********.
A PC is like a wife, you have some wondeful years, until the relationship crashes and you end up with a choice. You either upgrade and insert more silicon into its body. Or you get divorced and spend a large amount of time setting everything up again on the newer one.
EA has mostly abandoned DRM. Look at how well ME2 and DAO are doing.
Piracy is possible on any platform, and it's really no harder to pirate console games if you are determined to than it is PC games. Personally I do not "pirate", at least not since I grew up, got a job, and can afford to buy games whenever I want to. I did a ton of that back in high school in the C-64 days when I had no money. Which brings me to another point, a lot of these "pirated" copies of games are not lost sales, they are sales that never would have happened to begin with.
I blame Windows Vista and the the DirectX 10 exclusivity fiasco that Microsoft created for the decline of PC gaming over the last few years. This was a bonehead decision which has basically forced PC game publishers to keep using a graphics API that is nearly 10 years old, not getting the full advantage of the last few generations of video cards.
lol dude idk about you but i baby the **** out of my PS3 way more than i do my computer... My computer i can always just replace certain parts my PS3 however... if that messes up... im soo screwed lol Not to mention the Cell processor in the PS3 STILL cant be made from computers... the architecture is WAY to complex right now lol also all that need to be done to the PS3 for 3-D gaming is an update thats comming in July along with the new PS3 "Move" remots (Wii remote for PS3) oh God how i wish STO was gonna be on PS3 for that immersion
I completly agree not only that EA/Bioware kinda as the same idea that the STO team has but for a RPGs not MMORPG's lol in the since of still throwin content out constantly lol I LOVE IT! in fact ME2 IS my faviote game and it really has me on the egde of my seat for ME3..(i survived the final mission with EVERYONE!!!
To be fair DAO os loaded with DRM and an online server check before you can load any DLC content. It also does not work very well, has caused thousands of complaints from paying customers locked out of content that they own and is easily by-passable with a little creative xml editing and another step I won't mention here.
Like you I too buy all my software but I'm well up to speed in the realms of piracy as I have a 1Gbit server in Paris ( Polish IP address ) that I allow certain groups to use for large file transfers. ( that's enough about that )
DRM does not work. It punished the fee-paying player whilst the pirates continue to enjoy all the software for free.
The only thing I found interesting about this news when it appeared was that it led me to a statement from Atari at the time of the Atari buyout where it was stated categorically that both CO and STO were being developed exclusively by Cryptic for the console market. So I guess it was Atari who switched the focus to PC ( and left us with spacebar mashing ). Given that most of Atari's business is in the console market and they have a good relationship with both Sony and Microsoft I am really intrigued as to the real reasons they can't get the bog two console makers to work with them on these games.
Maybe it will all come out in the wash. I'm chomping at the bit for the next financials and shareholder reports
