In the spirit of Deanna Troi, what about the idea of having a designated "Ship's Counselor". Or it could be an option for those captains who think like Capt. Cusak or Chief O'Brien who thought that there was no need for a "Ship's Counselor".
What would a STO Ship's Counselor do? Well, how about to advise that new Science vessel captain about which path (spec) might be useful. Or they could help said captain understand which "talents" (Sorry Cryptic for the WoW Reference) would be better in PVE or PVP. This would take some serious thought on the part of the Developers for meshing MMORPG concepts with Star Trek Lore.
It would also give us a vital tool in managing our characters. I hate having to go out of game to try to find some third party site which gives me a little more understanding on how to best optimize my character. It would be just cool to have to go to my bridge and have a chat with my Ship's Counselor before I plunked down valuable training points that I invariably end up at the RESPEC NPC correcting. Not to limit a Counselor to just this purpose, but it's really high on my needs list so I use it as my primary example.
What do you think? Is the AI too complex? Would it be possible? Would it be "TOO MUCH RPing" (Actually I don't know why there is not MORE RPing - Isn't that what Star Trek is really all about?)
This game is sorta what you make of it. There are some "Twitchers" who will race through the content and then complain that there is nothing left to do. Then there are others, I place myself in this latter category, who join a cool fleet (Cudos TIL), enjoy RPing and immerse myself into the really cool missions - State of Q (10 of 10 - WOW! Would have been better if John De Lancie had done Voice-Overs, but still WOW!)
Why not transfer these duties to the ship's computer?
If you haven't taken a look at the Tribble Build, do so now. There's a drop-down menu when it will only show the skills that influence the ability you select.
If there was an option to assign a BO as counsellor, there should be some precautions taken to avoid a Deanna Troi sneaking on any ship. It would be devestating!
A real use for non-annoying counsellors... Maybe a BO could temporarily boost another one, as in boosting their morale for the next battle. Like, you assign the counsellor BO to "tactical ensign station" (using 'Torpedo Yield I') - for the next battle, the skill is made 'Torpedo Yield II'. Something like that.
I do have a very rare betazoid female bo and using the tos shirt looks the part too, but the best use for a co is during diplomatic missions I think and firt contact too.

We have considered this, and if we do add something akin to a ship's counselor, Diplomatic missions such as First Contact will be where you're most likely to see us add the feature.

Please do. The more unique BO positions the better. I'm happy to see that you're adding the First Officer in season 2 and I hope that you can get the Councilor and doctor in sometime soon.

anyway, I am waxing pathetic, so...
Live Long and Prosper!
I would prefer a 1st officer and ships doctor before I would ever consider a counselor
so until the other positions are are active with in this game I would VOTE NO

I would not mind having a counselor for diplomacy missions, the idea speaks to me.
You could train them in all things diplomacy related.
Make it so... lol

As the resident expert here... Do you know what First Officers DO?
I'm partial to the idea of playing as one, maybe having them as a multi-speccing option where they can be one rank below us and we can play a limited version of another class/spec.
Thats along the lines of what I'm calling for. My idea is that we can put some of the other officers are offered to use in single roles on our ships. Everyone would have the ability but as usual it would vary depending on your ship. Your officer would be used, just as when we used them to train a crew member. They could be injured like our other team members can on high difficulty setting, that would effect their ability. Their performance levels would change, be random depending on situations and not controlled by us pressing buttons in our ability tray, its to automated.
Example
Doctor/Medic in a Sickbay and we assign a Science Officer providing they have a healing skill. The healing skills they have would effect regen rate of our crew. I think a busier ship would be more fun, also less officers sold on exchange. They don't sell much, it's just another example of how much we are offered in the game but never need to use. We're at war yet resources are nothing to worry about even people.
We also have the injury system being brought into place and need to visit a station to repair our character. Thats going to be just as annoying to have to do as getting supplys for an aid mission was. Considering we have a whole starship, cruisers being massive and science ships having a lot of technology I don't think we should be going to a space dock after every mission if we increased difficulty. They would have what we need or should so obviously my idea may require ship interiors before it is in place.
A ship's counselor could be a good in-ship-interior way of organizing your or your boff's skills. I would definitely approve of having a counselor who can store your "career planning" templates for you!
If you have a fully promoted and skilled counselor, s/he could also help you retain auto-assignment of boffs to ships or ship stations. So, rather than fiddling with the assignments tab, you could click the counselor button on the ship flight view and load a template for your ship for certain situations. "I'm fighting Borg, please assign my crew members for that." or "I'm going into PVP, please send up the crew for that." sort of thing.
