amazing. Now I'm going to have to download this tribble. it sounds like a much better game. ok all jerkness aside. that's great, and needed. it will make player to player chat better.
Yar, if this were a real feature (it isn't, yet), I'd like it to use the same whitelist as email. Then it would be cool
Especially if it used the "hailing" SFX from TNG
I'd like this but beforehand, I think they need the little blinky lights both on our bridge hailing screens and in the hailing UI.
They almost forgot that when they designed the Enterprise-E and it was supposedly a big deal internally with the designers at Paramount. Those blinky lights matter because they're one of the most iconic visual parts of Trek.
I understand animated textures may not be possible in the engine but you could solve that by having a rotating disc with the light on it, viewable through a small hole/window in the bridge architecture beneath the viewscreen.
However, it would be an awesome feature, and something we are talking about for the future. (no promises though)
I was actually thinking about this and I think I figured out how viewscreens would work. Can't you just have %-scaled up avatars floating in space behind an invisible wall where the viewscreen is? You just despawn the giant NPC and turn the lights off/move them when not in use.
You could argue that might look "too 3D" but my understanding is that, canonically, the viewscreen is supposed to be 3D, like looking into the space you're viewing, but it doesn't always look that way on the show for filming and budget considerations.

It will make player chat better?
we could do the same thing by choosing "private message", with no extra pop-up windows.
I agree it looks more "Trek-ish", but I doubt it makes chat any "better"...
But it does offer a unique looking interface for ship to ship chat.
I just hope I have a choice on turning it off, since I don't like huge pop-up windows on, anything...

LOL ohh please no!
Close enough?

Having the window that shows their picture look like a viewscreen would be AWESOME.
Having this function on your bridge would be INCREDIBLY AWESOME.
