Im Done.

think my time in STO is nearing it's end.
i went in with high hopes and was rewarded with mediocrity.
it pains me to see this Franchise given such a disservice by a clearly uninterested company.
the blunders started using a terrible recycled engine and just got worse from there. im sure many people love this game. but to me there is no final frontier. nothing to explore ..

i cant justify paying 15 dollars a month for a game that clearly lacks the heart and passion of star trek.

as i said no final frontier. this isnt the federation or even star trek. you take out the name star trek and it becomes generic cryptic mmo number 3.

i call it lazyness that im playing champions online in space. adding more raids isnt fixing this game. adding more garbage to the c-store isnt fixing this game. adding a blatant obvious attempt to sucker people in with a phony council wont fix this game.

you all claim to be star trek fans. you the designers of this game...but i have to wonder....what exactly where you watching? virtually every element that makes star trek star trek is missing from this game.

im not sad to be leaving. but im not surprised that this game is floundering either.

this game had great potential to be an amazing game an amazing universe and deep with rich exciting missions. instead this license was handed to the "other* guys. and these other guys did exactly what i figured they would. rushed a cheap product out and now attempt to fill it with more of the Exact same raids.

anyways rant off. im off to cash my lot in with another company who has yet to dissapoint me.

goodbye trekfans goodbye cryptic. may you learn one day the value of quality over quantity.

Sorry you are leaving and I hope you find a game to meet your expectations.

I know many were disappointed in this game. However, I believe that this game is evolving into a good Star Trek game. I know for many it isn't happening fast enough for some and I respect that.

Maybe you should check back in two or three months? Just take a look at the upcoming diplomacy and interiors features, they might surprise you.

People dont check back when they quit. Thats the thing. The MMO market is so horribly cluttered that people never come back once they quit. Look what happened to AoC or Champions Online? They can go play WoW or Aion. Or the latest and greatest. Once you burn a gamer, you loose them as a customer. Of course its based on the amount of fail in the game and the level of burnage. STO has to be max on both factors.

On the scale that STO failed with the market, dont expect more than 1-5% of the people, Cryptic burned, to come back.

Fanboys can disagree with me on that. I just have the physical proof to back me up. Age of Conan. Age of Conan has a lot more to offer than STO. It has depth, quests, crafting (confusing crafting, its still something and can be usefull), legitimate dungeons and raids, a mature rating, beheadings. Except it stinks. PVP rules stunk. Stability issues. The worst expansive regions in any games history (take half hour to 45 minutes to wander across a zone). Not to mention at ton of other junk like GMs not speaking english as their primary language, European support hours, rude customer service, being able to glitch through walls, getting a warning for saying on a RP realm "Stop! Or I'll fling the poopy on you!" because the gm thought I was making fun of them by calling them Poopy. It just stunk. Just like STO just stinks.

All though there is a visible effort on Cryptic's part to make it not stink. Its too slow, and alf hass backwards. Things like optional shield rings (I like it) and making Borg like they are wolf 359 even though it is how many years later (think fighting the TRIBBLE in Europe 1945 using Circa 1917 technology) dont make sense. What does is content. Im not talking about the poorly designed, implemented and hardly finished STFs. Im talking about something the average person can do after RA5. Episodic content. The bread and butter of ANY game.

There needs to be 2 factions not one and the red headed step child of the universe. There needs to be diversity in missions. I love getting Scan the meteorite missions in every sector and having to fight a race called the "cereal box" (or cri box or however you say it) over the ability to scan a non corporeal entity.

There lacks any element of the original Star Trek feel. Its like Rick Berman wrote STO. For me, Berman flies about as long as the Spruce Goose did. This lacks inspiration. All it is is fighting. Space Battles, ground battles, banging your head against brick walls. I guess this could be chocked up to a lack of diversity too. Still Star Trek is about Bodly going where no one has gone before. Not "THE LINE MUST BE DRAWN HEAR AND I DONT CARE IF IM SPITTING IN THE FACE OF MY ENTIRE TNG CHARACTER!"

Constant battles is not what people see as star trek. Look at what happened the last couple years of DS9, Voyager, season 3 of Enterprise. People stopped watching them. Rick Berman's infinite war killed them.

Oh and why can I go into the neutral zone without any penalties or reprocussion? Ships wouldnt go into neutral zones being that it would be an act of war in the TV series. You cant even do that in real life without causing wars. When did the Federation not care about treaties and become a power loving maniacal empire that it could careless about the sovereignty of the Klingons and the Romulans?

I can only disagree on a personal level, a few months after my first month of WAR I went back, nothing had changed so I dropped it. But in Champions I went back after a few months and saw that I had about 5 new quests that weren't there the last time I logged on, so I actually started playing and leveling again until STO came out.

Not to mention Star Trek is a bit of an exception here because people want so badly to play in a Star Trek universe that I think once diplomacy and interiors are released and refined a lot of trek nerds will come back. Just look at the modding community, they took originally pretty crappy games and turned them into something awesome, requiring weeks and even months of work to do so.

I think we will start to see a turnaround in subscription numbers, a steady growth instead of a loss. It doesn't have to be much but a nice steady growth rate would be enough.

EDIT: and it looks like they're putting a lot of work into diplomacy, they're adding a whole new skill tree and missions like first contact and anthropology(Discover as much as you can about a pre-warp civilization without blowing your cover). But if you expected every mission in STO to make you go "WOW that's such a unique and nuanced idea! This totally changes the way I view the world!" like some episodes of Star Trek did I think you'll be waiting a long, long time for that game.

Funny that you chose AOC as your example on how people never come back. I quit AoC on month two because of how bad it was at launch. It launched in far worse shape than STO. One of the few games I actually ragequit. (The other being Funcom's other game Anarchy Online.)

And I'm back playing it now. And their forums are full of posts by people just like me who came back recently. Some because of the upcoming expansion, others because the game just looks great right now. There are even brand new people there. My wife, of all people, was one of them. She convinced me to try it again. The population on my server is really looking healthy, with lots of groups and guilds doing their thing. Even RP is doing okay there.

Short story is, if things improve enough, some people will come back. And new people will come aboard. Will it? Thats another question entirely. But I remain optimistic. I like the sound of some stuff coming down the line.

Likewise I would have to disagree. I'm not much into online games, STO And SL are it for me, but I do work with a large group of gamers, I can look at 10 people sitting within throwing distance of me who are MMORPG types (and now they are looking over my shoulder reading since I looked around to confirm that number). To a person they have all quit and rejoined multiple games at multiple times. WoW is the champ, it's a revolving door for just about all of them. They join, play for a few months, rage-quit over some guild stuff or something, swear never to play again, then six months later they are back at it... I think right now all 10 are members, and they have all quit at least 3 times since I've known them. One guy I swear has quit at least a dozen times in 5 years (he says it's only six, but I think it's 12). Star Wars Galaxies is the next most often quit/rejoined. I think out of the 10 people here 8 of them joined/quite/rejoined/requit/rejoined. For STO, right now 4 of use have joined. Three with lifetime. Two of us are playing regularly. One has quit forever (but he has a lifetime so he's really just taking a break), the last quit and is waiting for more content. There are two more who have the game and are waiting to start their free play when Season 2 comes out.

Now maybe everyone I work with makes up that 1-5%, but I think the numbers are a bit higher.

Sorry to see you leave but here is the rub. Cryptic did not rush the game out Paramount did. Viacom which owns paramount and the star trek lable told Cryptic they were taking too long on the game and gave them a deadline. If cryptic was not able to deliver a working game by their deadline, they were going to pull the liscense and the contract and give it to somebody else. This left cryptic with half the time that most larger companies have to develope a descent mmo. That is why we have a game loaded with bugs and lacking in contact. Most of the stuff cryptic is releasing right now was supposed to be part of the original release of the game if they had been given the proper time to develope it. If your going to point blame point it at the accountants at viacom trying to squeeze all the money they can out of their cash cow regardless of the reactions from loyal fans. Come back in a year and you will see how this game should have been from the start.

Yet another example of Canon vs MMO Lore. What you say is boring and redundant is fun an exhilarating for someone else. I hate to revisit the whole Advisory Council thing because I know a troll will jump in the pool, but one of the main concerns was having Canon Lawyers trying to make the game simply an extension of a TV episode or movie. This is a fair concern for the MMO gamers. It's the MMO gamer that is going to help carry the game. The Canon Layers are the ones that are going to contribute to the flavor of the game.

Fact of the matter is that Cryptic was forced to get the game out by a set deadline. Considering the time constraints they have produced a very useful product. Is it stable? Of course not, it's only been 2 months. If you came into STO expecting a perfectly polished and sharpened rapier then yes you are and should be disappointed that what you got was a baseball bat with nails hammered into the fat of the bat. Now if you came in with the understanding that its a new product and there will be stability issues then your are probably less disappointed and sitting at the edge of your seat waiting for the next patch.

Cryptic doesn't have a magic wand that they can just wave around and poof fixes happen. It takes time and money. I am looking at my subscription as an investment in Cryptic. They have shown me their willingness to at least keep me informed. Go to other MMO forums and support sites. Find their calendar of "scheduled" content release dates. By the time you are done searching you will notice that a year has passed and STO has matured.

Am I an STO fanboy, nope not at all. Am I a Trekkie, yep, just not totally geeked out about it. After playing other MMOs I have to say that this is the most fun I've had in quite some time. It is an interesting mix of gamers and trekkies. Both groups are still working towards a common ground of communication; and yes the gamers seem to be the better communicators in instances, sorry it comes form practice.

The more people that leave just 2 months into the release of the game, the less interest Cryptic will have in supporting it. Basic economics.

In short, people need to relax and enjoy the game. Sure it needs work. Provide some new constructive criticism. Buy some Atari stock, hell it's only around a buck and a half. Cryptic is doing a lot of things right and not rushing into it. Help them help you.

INB4L - Good luck mate, I will be joining you shortly. I haven't played for a month and have been playing Aika Online which is a far better MMO than STO and its free.

For the record, I agree with you whole heartedly. You should make that text into a Generic I am leaving post so we all don't have to re-type the same things. Surely Cryptic should see a pattern with every leaver writing the same stuff over and over but alas they never listen and will move on to there NEXT dated crappy MMO!

I'm sorry to hear you've decided to leave, CaptainThraxx. As many people have said already, we have a lot of really significant things in the works, so I highly encourage you to keep a close eye on the development calender, you may be surprised by where the game is at in a few months.

In the mean time, I am closing this thread down now.
