Ok everyone the game is riddled with problems we all know. Lack of content, major bugs, communication the list is endless. The majority of players agree we are playing a paid beta and this game is not going to be at a good launch level until july at the earliest. What i would really like a responce on is the communication. What we were getting has now nearly gone in the past 3-4 weeks. Dev posts, content patchs and updates have slowed right down. The players council!!? Where is this??? why have we not heard anything more. This is a highly contraversal topic but i was under the impression its purpose in part was to communicate with cryptic and the community. Has this now been scrubbed? I speak to so many players who are now MIA simply because of the state of the game and there lack of hope in change. We need more communciation!!! Come on Cryptic!!! If your not carefull the player base will start to think you are going to kill this one like Champions for the next MMO.
Yeah, well, judging from a huge amount of posts on the Warhammer Online forums, Warhammer Online has been dying since the very first day it was released. It's still around. And since people around here are using it as and example for how poorly STO is doing, I'd reckon they don't think it'll die anytime soon.
As is AoC, CoH, Vanguard, and many other games people have decried as doomed over the years. This thread is really nothing more then a disgruntled fan unable to separate his opinion from the social view: IE, I don't like it and don't play it so that means no one likes it or plays it either.

Hey, thanks for sharing....
Am I the only person who has a browser that auto-spell-checks?
Am I the only person who has a browser that auto-spell-checks?
No, no you're not. I just wish they invented a function that automatically clicked return for you thus dividing people's rants into readable paragraphs.
I pug because I do not like GUILD drama. Therefor I am forced to pug out of necessity and I have noticed a distinct drop in available players other then loot *****s and brand new RA's.
For weeks I added friends to the list and I would dare say 90% of them are never on...Well at least during my hours of play 5-8p pacific time. I have 37 on my friends list...the most I have seen on at one time was 2....makes me a little nervous and dreadful of the future...I can always hope with new content that most will come back and experience it...then leave again....
This being said....I have definitely seen a drop in player base IN MY OWN EXPERIENCES,,,
Yes I play Vanguard still and MXO until last summer. I have no issues with low population but Star trek online is suffering this fate way too early......It is still a new game...
And that is my point in closing.......it's too damn early for it to be a low population game.
Cool thanks for the info on the Council. Just to clarify i wasnt saying the game was dead yet lol. But it is dieing and not in the same way alot of other MMO's are. Alot of MMOS loss the customer base due to players drifiting to new MMO's or no longer deciding the cost does not way up the benifits. E.g they have played as much as possible but no longer get that "kick" they used to. STO on the over hand has only been out the stable door for a couple of months and droves of players are leaving. Almost every player i have spoken to is leaving with discontent. They want to love this game but most now hate Cryptic now and they almost all feel like you should see credits at hitting RA5 rather than this being lablled an MMO. I do not know of many other MMO's "SWG excluded" where people leave due to hateread of the distribtor. Furthermore monthlys are the bread and butter of this game. With out them the game can only last so long on the lump of cash from Lifers.
I personnally just feel that things have really slowed up now. We haveh ad the rush of 1.1 in parts and now its kind of well ive done the couple of Fleet actions back to square one. Them ost frustrating thing of all this is still the lack of communication.

I seem to the remember the forum-base doing nothing trashing the idea of a council (note I don't use the term player-base since forum MMO'ers are playing a completely different game). I've always suspected that alot of the council hate came from the fact that the loudest forums trolls didn't make it in. I never had a problem with the council, but after all the negative feedback I'm not terribly surprised if it falls by the wayside. I seem to see more polls now that are directly asking what players are looking for in STO. This will give more limited input for the dev's, but everyone will feel like they had an opportunity to be heard.
Funny how seven years of development = more to do. I wonder how that could happen?
Ha. Yeah, thats SOE for you. They have a special branch of the asylum doing their development. Take a look at the evolution of EQ 1 (almost 12 years old, dying for 6 years, and still releasing expansions) where the first 5 years catered to hardcore raiding, then catered to casual groupers for one expansion before returning to the hardcore group, then catered to boxers, then went back and catered to the hardcore raiders a third time.
Complaining about bugs in a game or any other kind of software is kinda like complaining that water is wet. Any software will have bugs, always... That's not me saying that the level of bugs is acceptable in STO because it's not. Some of these bugs needs to be ironed out, but! STO is still a new release and there is a limit to how much can be done in BETA.
Saying you want more, comparing to MMO's that's been around for 5+ years... How about giving them time to create more content? Like those other MMO's we like/liked so much.
How about we take a deep breath, think about what it is we really want right now? Bug fixing or more content? OH... I forgot... we want it all. Well that isn't going to happen, it's as simple as that. Bug fixing or creating more content. Both takes time and I'm willing to bet that more content will not reduce the number of bugs.
Personally I hope Cryptic chooses to focus on bug fixing and game improvements for now and then start thinking about what kind of content to add. Not just end game content either. Should be something for everybody (Fed & Klingon)

So you are telling you buy something knowing its not going to work properly and dont do anything about it?? You would take a TV back and complain if it didnt come with sound? Anyone who sat back when they tell you the sound will come in 6 months time is a fool.
. . . I speak to so many players who are now MIA simply because of the state of the game and there lack of hope in change. We need more communciation!!! Come on Cryptic!!! If your not carefull the player base will start to think you are going to kill this one like Champions for the next MMO.
Klingons - very incomplete, will take at least a year to get right, if Cryptic is capable of getting this right. The updates for Klingons that Cryptic has listed are minor. They continue to fall further behind the Federation with each update.
PvP - FUBARed bigtime. Cryptic doesn't seem to have the slightest clue, doesn't even mention PvP in their "engineering reports". Makes it sound like they don't see any problems here.
Next faction - really, and they will be done so much better than Klingons because?
Atari, yes I say Atari because they bought Cryptic and they are the ones pulling the ropes now, should have left the Klingons out until they had everything fixed and running smoothly. IMO they decided to chew on too big of a bite, only bringing criticism and spreading their resources too wide.
None functionning bridges was their biggest mistake IMO. Startrek fans have seen for decades action taking part mostly on ship bridges and most of them were expecting to be able to do exactly that, sit in the captain's chair, select a course and tell the enseign to engage the warp drive.
This game should have been released in 2011. It is clear by now that we were sold an unfinished product, that we're paying to beta test their work and this is clearly unacceptable. I can live with some minor glitches and balancing issues but here we're talking about game functionalities so screwed up that they don't work.
I gave Atari $100 so far and I will stop giving them more in 6 days exactly, my subscription is due to be renewed but I won't do it. I'll keep reading these forums and keep track of the development of the game because I like Startrek and this game shows some promises but I'll return only when Atari will deliver what we are paying for. So they best make good use of the money they got from me and others 'cause for now it's all they're going to get.
When I began playing this game, on the 8th of febuary, I helped creating a Fleet. We had no problem finding people to start it and we recruited many players every night that we logged in. It didn't take long to see people starting to leave, even our Fleet leader has given up. Me and and an other co-leader have been trying to keep people motivated but these days I have a hard time seeing one of my "friends" logged in.
If the project dies, then so be it...
My only hope for now is that Paramount/CBS, crack the whip and tell Atari to get their TRIBBLE working hard at fixing things, and fast before it is too late.
As is AoC, CoH, Vanguard, and many other games people have decried as doomed over the years. This thread is really nothing more then a disgruntled fan unable to separate his opinion from the social view: IE, I don't like it and don't play it so that means no one likes it or plays it either.
I agree......and am getting tired of them whIe I look for information that is meaningful and contain info I can use
If I understand this...the process goes like this.
New MMO comes out, tons of people jump on board.
They get their instant gratification on.
They leave.
They go back to WoW or something comparable.
There are different variations of course.
Trekkers are a hard lot to please.
Chances are they will not really be happy with anything released with the Star Trek title (with rare exceptions).
I think the reality many of us are facing is that the game was released too early. So we have bugs, not enough content, etc etc etc. I still enjoy the game, I will stick by it. But the reason something is a hobby is because you have many other things that take precedent over it. Its a slice of life when the other loose ends are tied up temporarily. Any of these mmos can be done within a month or twos time. Now I haven't personally done it, but I know many who have. I recently took a break(no i didnt cancel account! lol) and came back to experience the new slider and such. It was exciting. But where was I during the time I was gone? I was writing papers, doing a group project, and studying for finals. When I wasn't doing this I was playing Civilization 4 because I recently bought the expansion content. Had a few dates. Watched some Dexter and Lost. Smoked some cigs. Had dinner with family. Went to church. lol I would probably be really depressed too if I didn't have all these other things to work through and do.
I pay monthly and I worry about this game. I am willing to pay monthly for a Star Trek mmo, but like I have said STO feels like a Star Trek game not an MMO. You play an MMO to live a life or role play a character in a living breathing world or in this case Galaxy, with so many things to do and experience. I reached RA5 by week 2 (including head start, so 3 weeks) and now all I do is B'Tran missions/dailies and sometimes when I go into a system sometimes I just fly at slow impulse to moons and planets just to feel A Star Trek experience. Forcing the game to be something it is not is just not going to cut it with ALL players and PAYERS like myself or who play the game like I do. But I say this cause not everyone is going to stay and pay to MAKE the game feel like Star Trek. Not everyone is going to RP just to make the game into a MMO. C-store items is not the way to go at this point for STO. Star Trek Online needs games like these HERE, a Holodeck (OMG its not Star Trek ALMOST without a holodeck), and anything to do on Risa, Vulcan, or Andoria other than stand around looking stupid at each other is what this game needs most and is what MOST complaints are about, lack of content. With that said, STO does need more content, and if you think that STO is fine as is then your just saying it is fine out of spite and not from a mature, realistic point of view OR never played another MMO before.
No one can or will deny that STO was rushed and now we are paying for beta testing and game construction. But what I worry about IS the lack of players now and how so many people are canceling there account and ending their subscription. With this new time line, the new STAR TREK movie has created, this is the last of the Original Star Trek we all know and love but it will not be much fun playing with the same 100 people and small numbers will not pay for the beta testing and game construction like we are ALL doing now. What all you who flame or hate on the OP should be doing is siding with or joining forces with the OP cause he is a LIFER and he has more to lose than us monthly payers if STO crumbles. Instead of hating on him or bashing him see what he is saying...
If the majority leaves cause the lack of content or all the bugs then the game will crash like so many other MMO's before, and like someone said if it is dropping numbers at the early stage of the game then how will it be in 3 more months?
I personally want this game to succeed and I pay monthly AND I still have bug reports Open Beta old that the DEVS have not addressed or fixed like setting way points for bridge officers or setting key binds that stay. But like I was saying if STO crashes and fails then I lose nothing but what I pay a month to play. I got what I paid for but a LIFER is complaining and/or just wants more to keep EVERYONE here and happy not just LIFERS cause he probably sees it like I do, if people leave then we will have nothing to play OR complain about.
Bottom line, if STO fails we all go home, enough said.

Lolz.
EDIT: Dying. Dude. Dying.
Sooooo ... *shrug* Yeah. Whatever you say.
P.S. Champions is alive and kicking.

Guess I can watch a couple episodes of OZ......
Why?
Because it was controversial, as you said, and seemed to displease a large portion of the community.
Check out some of the interviews that occur, some times weekly.
You can check out the details on this subject HERE.
Yup, been seeing posts about SWG's impending death since.....CU?
So, early 2005 or so? At the latest the NGE, so Nov. 2005.
Damn, if I'm told I'm going to die soon, I hope it works like this.
I personnally just feel that things have really slowed up now. We haveh ad the rush of 1.1 in parts and now its kind of well ive done the couple of Fleet actions back to square one. Them ost frustrating thing of all this is still the lack of communication.
lots of players
more joining all the time
the mmo crowd left is all
thank god. i wanted a trek crowd
they can be smart, but i am not up to conventions
With my luck I will die like Earth & Beyond, they will just pull the plug on me at midnight GMT.
Yes good old SWG is closing in on it's 7th year soon and lets face it there is tons more to do there than there is in STO.

speaking of which, i still want the "Botany Bay" Dy 500 class whatever freighter that looks like a submarine
and the right to drop out of star fleet
and arm my frieghtor with some alien weapon i found that makes bright orange circles of glowing light and i don't get blown up all the time or as fast
and an alien engine that makes you be able to stealth away or be real fast or something
specialization of design over leveling
