Well first my disclaimer ..I want this to be a thread of constructive Comments and in no way do I intend for this to be a negative thread towards STO. But instead a thread where we can all help with concerns we all may have.
OK here it go's
- What are the plans in works to keep STO competitive once SWTOR launch's..
- How can this game compete or should it even try ?
- Cryptic is there something up your sleeve your not telling us . or is this it ?
- To see the age old battle of Star wars vs Star Trek and have Star Trek whimper silently in the corner would be shameful. please tell me this is not the plan.

In all fairness to Cryptic, they HAVE detailed their update plans...much more so than ANY MMO I've ever seen. Please check this link.
This game isn't SWTOR, nor is/was it trying to be and SWTORs imminent release is no reason for all MMO developers to throw in the towel mate.
Crytpic has told us all their plans through July, and we also know a new Faction will be coming out this year. I think the point of the Engineering Report section is to give us what information they feel is solid enough to give us. Anything else is reallyl just speculation on our and even their part as once you get past 6 months anything can happen in development.
first off Star wars is miles off, well over a year, so there is plenty of time to build a game that has a solid player base
second they are very different games, and just because there sci-fi does not mean everybody will switch off and go play star wars instead.
there are plenty of fantasy mmos around so i see no problem with there being plenty of space ones too
they are constantly changing the game to try and meet our expectations. most of the stuff that will happen after season 2 is only on the drawing board so we wont hear about it until its much further along. there is no point saying they will do X then for technical reason it will never happen
i do recommend checking out the engineering reports for the next 3 or 4 months of stuff that is due
Hahahahah...you are awsome Loxanna...you make me laugh.
Sad thing is...
1....you are totaly right
2....i have more fun reading and posting in the forums rather then actually playing the game
3.... (not sad) i'll see you in SWTOR
star wars has always been good vs evil.. sto can be A vs B vs C vs D vs E vs F vs G vs H so cryptic will win with the factions.
A = Federation of fools
B = Klingons
C = Romulans (romulans,remans,hirogen,alien)
D = Cardassians (spoon heads,alpha domniion things, yridians(sp), Alien)
E = Undine (Hmmm the undine have 5 genders so.. Undine 1,Undine 2,Undine 3, Undine 4, Undine 5)
F = Borg (any humanoid form)
G = Terran Empire (Terran(human) Vulcan,Bajoran,Orion,Tellerite,Andorian,Alien),
h = Dominion (jem hadar,vorta, changling(could use the same mechanoics as the undine)
I = Ferengi / Neutral / Civillain / Mauqis Faction (Ferengi,Breen,alien etc)
J = Peace loving nubs who hate war. (anything)
(not in order of importance)
Social areas all the factions can get to to hang out.. kill each other.. roleplay.. play mini games
(wh the borg and undine would play dabboo is beyond me but... well.. crazyier **** has happend)
uhmmm make a map similiar to eves ... fair enough we cant capture the story space.. but we ca fight to the death for our faction in deep space over.. planets.. minerals. etc .. build our own bases for evil reasons .. blow up stations (for more evil reasons)
having random events so we can all go "pew pew pew pew pew" and have a battle that feels like one in the trailers
Loxanna's refreshing demeanor aside, STO will have quite a bit more development on hand by the time SWTOR gets here.
Teaming and Fleet options in STO will be fairly robust by that time.
Mission replayability will already be in-game, and perhaps even Genesis level exploration will be available by then as well.
Ground maps should be a bit larger, with more wildlife and more environments to visit.
We'll see about the crafting system. Personally I think it needs a lot more work to make it any amount of fun at all, and I'd love to see a great diversity of methods used for collecting crafting materials, from planetside hunts and resource missions, mining platforms, nebula/gas cloud collection, archeological digs, etc. It's possible STO will see a major crafting overhaul by the release of STO.
I like my STO ship combat and ground combat. I seriously doubt SWTOR's ship combat will be anything worth writing home about. They're going to be completely different games, and it's going to need space combat to hold my interest.
Complaining about instancing in this game? SWTOR key storyline items are all instanced.
Don't like away team AI? SWTOR is full of this same idea to fill out your group.
Enjoy skipping boring monologues to get to the action? SWTOR is all talk, just to keep you subscribing. I don't want to waste game time listening to a story all night, I want to progress.
Worried about future developments and support? SWTOR admits they have to get 1 millions subscribers to even cover development costs and licensing, not even mentioning future development.
Ready for space battles, oh wait, SWTOR will not have any, goodbye flying a ship.
PvP? No existent and maybe only a queue system in the future.
Bioware states they want something different for the endgame content but have nothing even in development.
These are just the basics......
GOLDEN TICKET ITEM! Complaining about sizing issues in STO, try looking at a lightsaber in SWTOR.... HELLO CARTOONTASTIC GIANT SAUSAGE!
I bet when SWToR is released Loxanna will be on the forums complaining about how much the game sucks balls.
I will think you will find I only complain when I have cause too. I have used the name for over 10 years. Have you ever seen me complain on any other forums including WoWs for which I played for 4.5 years.
Why is someone who complains or expresses a opinion that's different too your own a whiner and so on?

There is no reason for STO to try and compete with that other game. It is going to be a giant bomb (like Aion). People like Loxanna have their hope up so high that no game is ever going to be able to live up to it. They're going to be really disappointed when they find out that the other game is just going to be a run of the mill MMO.

Aion is one of the handful of subscription-based MMOs which still has over 1 million subscribers, of course most of those are Asian subscribers but that doesn't matter to the statistics. 1 million is 1 million no matter where they live.

That's a good point.
I was thinking about the American version. We had to listen to how Aion was going to be the greatest game ever, and how it was going to crush WoW, and all other MMOs were going to go out of business. It turns out it is just a run of the mill MMO, and people were disappointed.
I like many will be playing TOR if its the last thing i do but, i really hope that STO will become a really great MMO well before TOR is out.
Just a few things i think will make this game really good is this:
Devs actually listen to the fans about the raids and enemy encounters etc.
Make better fleet actions were a s h i t load of players of all ranks can join together in epic battles in space.
Open pvp or big pvp sectors were players of all ranks can join and fight and have fun.
Fix the bugs and the mark of valor store. (35 marks of valor for a weapons is just patetic).
Give us voice over on our first officer that will come later, so we dont need that box anymore on the screen.
Just as mutch content for the klingon side as for the fed side.
Reduse the amount of skillpoints you get in enemy encounters by 1/3 so it will be a little harder to lv up, and provide more missions on the lower lv's.
Give us a android officer like Data/B4 that we can use for a officer/first officer and have some really good abilities on him that we can choose.I'm pretty sure 30 years later that the feds would have been able to replicate B4 so that every starship would have one.
Clean up the missions, to many astroids stones everyewere, (so many stones in every system its just silly) and get those thing your are supposed to scan somplace else then in the sxact spot you are supposed to fight. Let the players search for them.
More engame content. make the missions on RA5 longer so players can really enjoy them with they're fleet friends.
Make the Earth academy a reality that is big and epic were you can watch great videos on holodecks
on how to use your weapons how stuff works etc etc etc. Maybe watch holograms of the great captain's
telling you all this stuff and maybe they're own life's adventures.
Fix the ships ffs, The cruiser is supposed to be a tank. That a joke, we all now it. Iven with a +30 kinetic consol the cruiser is a joke.Same with the klingons carriers.
Prices in Cstore is, well a little high.
And ffs give us a few more skill points on RA5 lv so we can atleast maybe max out one ground skill and not just only the ship...
Let players use all 8 skills on our officers that has the same profesion as we are.
And of course, why 50 instances, remove all the nps walking around and let more players join together
and let us feel like we are in a MMO. Not a singel player game.
STO goals are to let the players influence the game. No other MMO I know of is trying that. So many people have built SWTOR up so much. The numbers it needs to survive. There is a real chance it could fail and send more players to us. All this talk we are seeing about how great SWTOR is going to be has all ready been done with AOC. Really all of the people who have been so critical on STO and other games. Pretty safe to believe they will be just as critical about SWTOR.

As I said above, every MMO I've ever playtested (that's 14 so far and 2 that I'm currently testing) have fans who say the same thing before launch. They're all WoW-killers until people start playing them. As I say on every forum I've ever been on prior to a game's launch: "half of you who think this game will be the greatest thing you'll ever play will leave within months after release." Expectations are always greater then the reality.
Well first my disclaimer ..I want this to be a thread of constructive Comments and in no way do I intend for this to be a negative thread towards STO. But instead a thread where we can all help with concerns we all may have.

You know all those complaints about what's wrong with STO? Like how its gameplay is boring and repetitive? How there isn't enough to do? How instancing ruins immersion? How this piece of gear or that item doesn't fit the story? How the stories and mission text are skippable? Etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum?
They will all apply to SWOTR. Because they all apply to every MMO.
So take every bad thing you dislike about this game, replace the trek-ness of it with a star wars old republic element, and you have the meat and potatoes of the SWOTR forums.

I have played at launch in five. What you say is true. All through open beta you will hear. This will be the game to bring down WoW. After the first month a lot people leave when their free month is up. Then it's doom... doom is everywhere. Then more leave after the second month. Then the talk is this game and the company is going to fail and die.
I dear you to write this nonsens on the TOR forum. The people will laught and think you are trolling. Dont think you have been reading the TOR forums at all. Or seen the dev videos.
FYI, I was on the SWTOR forums when they had their initial site. I am still on there. I complain just as much there, just in a different name.

Not True. I never build up my hopes for any game but as I have liked every Bioware game I can think of, I suspect I will like SWTOR alot. I am not opposed to instancing, I liked guild wars alot but there's large instances and teeny instances like in STO that give no sense of immersion. I play D&D on-line and like it a lot and that's instanced to the max but its a good game and its free. STO is just a poor poor example of a game and should be a benchmark for future MMO devs on what not too do!
Oh and regards all the waffle about long quest dialogues and time syncs GREAT!!! I love Bioware's Immersion!
STO instancing wouldnt have been too bad on planets if they where bigger and there where a few npcs dotted around with the odd quest. You know, Rewards for exploring!
i think TOR will be a great success although it probably will have its problems like any game.
The first month will be a mess, bugs-a-plenty and server crashes
i get the feeling, because of the huge amount of voice acting and instances that it will play very much like a single player experience or with just a few friends, but then that suits the way i play
im sure there will be dozens of ' SWTOR is not a MMO' threads pop up as well
I do think that people seam to have taken the either/or approach. it will either be the greatest game ever or crash and burn
i suspect it will fall somewhere in between. much like every other mmo
Alot of great posts .. And yes Cryptic has done a very good job of being open with us.. Kudos to them for that .. it is the best communication ive seen for any mmo to date.
My concerns are that I have read the engineering reports and the calendar of things they plan to implement.
But sadly I don't think at this point it will be enough .. Im just being honest .. every Friday with SWTORS new sneak preview it just gets better and better. Am I being hyped up .. YOU BET I AM.. but that's the problem am I being hyped up for the future of STO .. not really although There communication is very good and I do enjoy the game very much.. but when I see whats coming for SWTOR I droool.
Yes Cryptic has listened to our wish's and have or have plans to implement some of the things we want to see, BUT only the small things the rest they just say its something they would like to see as well .. well umm great but no commitment Id like to see us all drive Buggatti Veyrons .. see my point.
I guess Im looking for something to give me the hype that SWTOR does because Star trek could be greater.
Part of it is also Bio ware is taking a risk to develop there game, very calculated gamble that really should pay off.
Cryptic is playing it very very safe and not taking any gambles at all, even though it has the Star Trek branding and likely a larger fan base, so this could also be a calculated risk..
Cryptic need to be more proactive and do something "Stellar" and not just fly low, as it is not hard for me to believe that this STO project for cryptic is just cash farm until they take one of bio wares names which is owned by atari "never winter nights online" is announced.
* Quote: We are going to have crafting, because that's a big part of MMOs. We're going to implement crafting in a way that 'feels' right for Star Wars. - Massively TOR 2008
* Quote: Weve spent quite a bit of time discussing how to ensure that crafters true dedicated crafters can make a name for themselves and be important in their community. - Dev Blog Damion Schubert
That's essentially the same thing the STO developers are telling us.
TOR even has a "beam me up" function labeled "call shuttle" - only you don't get the fly the shuttle or vehicles.
I like Bioware but I have a feeling that the TOR won't live up to KOTOR's standards.
Cryptic is playing it very very safe and not taking any gambles at all, even though it has the Star Trek branding and likely a larger fan base, so this could also be a calculated risk..
im just making stuff up here because i have no real idea but i suspect that star wars outstrips star trek but some considerable distance in terms of fanbase, if you count casual fans
To the general population star wars is 6 films, about giant wars in space (funny enough), which attracts the general population. people that hate science fiction have seen and loved star wars because it keeps itself simple. good vs evil with lots of explosions and sword fights, everybody saw it as a child and its ingrained in their memories. each has made hundreds of millions dollars
star treks has much more subject matter but its probably seen as a more hardcore franchise, a lot of it is slow and whilst much more intelligent, most casual people dont give it the time of day. the box office figures for nemesis shows that. however good or bad you think that film was a star wars film would have made five or six times as much money
Wow, reading through that it sounds a heck of a lot like STO. Of course Bioware is putting way more money into it but I think that it might just balence out with the extra time that STO is getting to be about equal games when it releases. After all STO will be in what? season 5-6 by then?

Cryptic need to be more proactive and do something "Stellar" and not just fly low, as it is not hard for me to believe that this STO project for cryptic is just cash farm until they take one of bio wares names which is owned by atari "never winter nights online" is announced.
That's essentially the same thing the STO developers are telling us.
TOR even has a "beam me up" function labeled "call shuttle" - only you don't get the fly the shuttle or vehicles.
I like Bioware but I have a feeling that the TOR won't live up to KOTOR's standards.
im just making stuff up here because i have no real idea but i suspect that star wars outstrips star trek but some considerable distance in terms of fanbase, if you count casual fans
