Trying to find reasons to play

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Hi all,

I have not played in two months...I know, like anyone cares! I have a lifetime sub and love some aspects of this game. Currently sitting at Captain, I cant find the strength to move on. Everytime I log in I get immediately bored. Grinding through the same missions is just brutal, and im finding it hard to have the patience to level anymore. I do some PvP here and there but im finding that the Feds just get blown away by the Klingons. Most of the time.

I want to like this game. I love Star Trek. I think we have some great core mechanics working here. With the new updates I just cant find the will to keep playing until we get something significant. I hate to say it but this game was released unfinished, and im not trying to beat a dead horse here...I want this game to succeed. has anyone found a fun way to level? What is something you are doing to keep you interested? I for one am having a hard time!

Take a month or two off, i did. No need to play a game to the point where you can't stand it anymore.

I keep myself interested in various games by not focusing all my attention and free time on them. I subscribe to 7 different MMOs and play several different console/computer games to fill up my free time. Anyone will get burned out or disillusioned if they're devoting all their waking free time to a singular thing. Since you have an LTS you have the luxury of leaving for 6 months and checking back in when the game is closer to what you feel a finished game should be. There's no shame in that. One of the reasons I bought an LTS is because I know I can come and go as the mood strikes me. The game is always mine. Go and play other things. I've left and returned to many games over the years, some years later. Enjoy your life and don't focus so much on a single hobby. It's not worth the angst you're giving yourself.

It happens. I played AoC for 2 weeks before quitting - and that's after Playtesting it for months and months. I went back a year later and found it to be a really interesting game now. I left Aion in about a week. I played WoW for a year at launch and Eve for about 6 months on and off. Some games are just boring to some people, and sometimes as your tastes change you go back and find that something you hated today you really like a year from now. As I said, don't focus so much on it. It's just a single hobby and a single MMO. There's dozens to choose from.

    TO OP:
I gotta admit, I love the lifetime sub. I am working on my MBA, while fixing up my fiance's house, spending time with my kids and working full time. Sometimes I am short on time, but having the lifetimer means I can hop in for 20 mins, go PvP a little or PvE, enjoy it and not feel guilty each month doing the "should I spend this money" question.

My brother is the same. His wife had their first kid the day after STO released. He is a captain, has a lifetime sub and loves hoping in and out while taking care of the kid. He is not in a rush either and loves all the updates.

Unlike most MMOs, this game feels like Eve to me as I find no rush or need to be in 24/7 just to keep up. I like it, and for busy people, it is perfect, like turning on your XBOX or Wii to bust a game out in your free time, except the graphics are better, and my RA5 Escort is tight :D

NOTE: Casual Play Speed, got RA in about 2-3 months.

in my opinion, i dont see a reason for people to stay with the game for long period of time. you can become admiral in a week at start if you decided to. play the dailys for rest of month and give up and dont look back. thats what is seems like to me. this game doesnt have a core or reason to play. the missions given by characters are missing something, im not talking about the glitches or bugs. im talking about content. you go in you scan or kill, but no purpose no reason, it doesnt have a purpose. after admiral you dont have purpose or nothing to do except dailys wich are getting old because there is nothing to do at rear admiral 5. cryptic is aware of this and they seem to be trying but unfortuneately it seems to be failing. the rants on the forums are tremendous. i understand that thier are alot of crybabys on forums and some people arent happy unless they have something to complain about. but with the loss of members and activity that i have seen in the past month is enormous. unless cryptic does something drastic like give, we the people defendable fleet owned starbases then i think this game is doomed to end in 18 months from launch.

I think Realm vs Realm will bring tons of people in. Then again, sidekicking did wonders for CoH back in the day... we shall see.

18 months... good thing the lifetime sub depreciates over 16 months ;-)

Why do you say that? taking time off kept me interested and the OP was looking for some way to keep them interested. They've got a lifetime sub just like me so they can afford to take time off and come back later when there's more content available.

Well ship interiors are something to look forward too. And if they deliver those 6 months after release I'd love to see what they can do with 18 months.

so 2 months is the most anyone can take off? i'll have to write that down. These star trek rules are really in depth.

Well the way your first post was worded it seemed like you missed that. I say the same thing to anybody who finds the game boring, just take a few months off, but in this case I'd say take a few more off and wait for interiors and the next sector block.

If you want to reach the new content faster - do Deep Space Encounters (switch to active instances only).

This should eliminate the 5 minute downtime between encounters. It got me from Captain really fast.

Also, Exploration (while a grind right now) goes by fast - and you can max green equipment for your Rank quickly.. :D

I am having a very hard time too, I've tried everything, PvE, PvP, Fleet Actions, Explorations; but I just don't feel attached to the world at all. I have my bridge crew that I like, but at the same time they never do anything but shoot people and talk to me only during missions. I suppose in another year it might be ready to actually recommend to people, if they even have monthly subscribers at that point.

I'm afraid they aren't going to invest enough time into the game (as measured in working hours) to bring it up to something people will want to pay for.

Personally I got to RA5 and started to get a little bored so I went and did an alt with an different career, ship, then then about half way through started a klingon, then another alt etc.
Right now i have 5 characters all at different levels and I just rotate the ones i play to keep it interesting

The point for me though is i still find the game fun. If you dont enjoy it because you have seen most of the game then doing alts might not help

I also suggest waiting for season 2 and see what that brings

Well....for me to keep the game fresh....

I make differing character which i try to play drasticaly different....and when i say this i mean drastically...like as in kill everything with one character to minimalist do the mission with another.....i mean i realy try to make them different...even weapons are vastly different...as are the ships.

I also go into the tribble server and test stuff and find problems.....there are many of them...and many problems are actualy with some of the powers currently inthe game....and onthe test server they are still problems...whihc means the developement team has no idea that they are problematic.....

its not my cup of tea...but some people like making fleets....then they run a web site and do alot of stuff....

There are also role players...track them down and do role playing.....

Another hobby i have is to explore the areas.....i had no idea you could leave the dungeon like underground city on the klingon starting planet.......

I went outside...and found lots of NPCs...not sure what their function is but they tell you things.....i also found groups of role playing klingons...telling stories like klingons.....i actualy enjoyed the one about stalking the hunter ships for days...that was a good one....

And on the exploring issue.....if you have not noticed the beginner game is filled with mostly place holder missions.......its not like hte ones you get at commander and beyond.....

I actualy liked the one where you fight the aliens from the other dimension after you put up that special thing on the engine room of that one ship with the entire crew who where dead.....nice mission arc.

and if you really want to see some interesting stuff.......go down the list...what i mean is....explore every system.....you will notice that you have not gone to all of them....some of them are interesting....maybe snap shots of things to come.....i dont really know....but interesting none the less.

You can always try the pvp.....but for me that gets tedious...plus...its like klingons only will do ship battles and federation only want to do ground battles.....go figure....and the numbers are just sub-par....probably becasue their are no wild card elements to the combat areas.....

I personaly find playing the first way i mentioned to be the most fun...i see the OP made a klingon and federation character and thats about it....i am sure he is probably switching around ship types and such......but what is more fun is sticking to a single ship class type....and playing with just that type....and then trying differing characetrs with differing ship types....i get more out of the game that way...and plus i then know what other people are experiencing....so i can better play against them or with them...

Like right now i am playing a Ferengi Engineer ona Cruiser....i was playing an Alien Tactical Officer on a Escort....i also have a recovered Borg Science Capatin dong nothing but Science ships....

I am doing the same hting with the klingons....i even made a character that is a vulcan female that will only have females on her ship.....made an alien captain who will only have aliens...my Ferengi captain only has Ferengi Bridge officers....i just cant help my self.....its the entire theme thing....

Its actually closer to 3 weeks. One check of the captains database shows he completed missions as late as April 5th. Me thinks the OP has given in to exaggeration and hyperbole.

2-or the game this engine was build for

anyway...my opinion is as valid as...anyone elses.

Actually at Captain you have soem pretty interesting missions ahead of you. You need to speak directly to the Captain in command of DS9 (once you hit Captain 4) in person. Using the COM Badge won't reveal a new series of missions.

    * Section 31 is introduced in one of them
    * The famed, Killing Jem Hadar Unborn mission is another!

    Fun times......Fun times.....

But seriously, you still have non-repetative content ahead of you. Avoid "Defend the Sector" missions, they are boring as heck.

When I did it, they clearly had eggs in the incubators. Cryptic may have done a "stealth patch" and made them empty after all of the uproar.

I have a screenshot of the eggs somewhere.

Hey OP... I havent played in who knows how long either...I even log in every so often to see if there are patches or whatnot..... but dont get past the character selection screen.....

I did try to play a few days ago but got to the first encounter in a ground mission, and just logged off.... more of the same old same old....

.... You could come play LOTRO like I am....or even DDO ( which is a hell of a lot of fun I have found !! )

I've a lifetime too....but its stale and stagnant.... STO has lost the charm..... and its been well over a couple weeks here as well.

I feel I'm getting to the point of just throwing the towel in for good unfortunately..... this wait for a better game just isnt happening.
