I know this may sound like a noobish question, so I apologize in advance. I am a lt. commander and I was just exploring the sector a bit and decided to see what Andoria and Vulcan looked like. To my surprise, I was able to beam down without being given a mission to both places. It did not appear though that I could NOT do anything in either place (Andoria is the place where you can challenge a Ushaan to battle?). Am I missing something or are these places nothing but something cool to look at?
I mean at lesat I could buy stuff, etc at DS9 and Memory Alpha... but here... it almost looked simply like graphic art... thats it. Just hoping i'm missing something.
Andore has a cave near were you beam in that has vendors that sale personal ground devices, and some food. It was suppose to be an area were you can do Deuls, but it never was finished.
Vulcan is just a tourest site like Risa to run around, and say ohhh, ahhhhh . That is if you are into the whole desert landscape, or in the case of Risa relax on the beach, and look at the bikini clad green chicks.
I was afraid of that. As much as I liked the idea of beaming down to visit them, I wouldn't have minded SOME functionaility. check mail, or access the exchange at least.
What I was really disappointed by was the lack of things to find (Analamous data). I wouldn't have minded finding some unique things here like random data samples or the like.
There's no Ushaan on Andoria? I've always visited solo, so I never realized. Is this confirmed?
Technically the "park rangers" say there is.... but I don't think this has been implemented by the Devs yet. So, like someone else said, this is simply something they MAY use in the future. For now... its just a place to "ooo" and "ahhhhh" at.
Hopefully Andoria, Risa and Vulcan will have repeatable missions. Actually that's why they're holding off releasing the rest of the solar system, because they'd just be something pretty to look at. Really all the maps for Mercury to Pluto are done but nothing to do there yet so they're keeping them in storage.

I agree with keeping them in storage for now if there is nothing to do there yet. Releasing a place where you can visit and "look" at the beautiful graphics but do nothing in them is not what people paid for. So... yes, please keep them in storage until we can do something in them. They should have blocked access to Vulcan and Andoria as well for this reason.
I would even go so far to say that they made the same mistake about the Captain's table... can't do anything there.

thats the half finished skeleton game many talk about...
at least Cryptic should add some information to the NPC conversation windows and popups that what you just read about duels isnt ingame at all...

You know, your idea is spot on. They really should add something into the NPC's conversation there to say "Hi, this area is currently under construction. For now, enjoy a look at what is to come!"
It would avoid confusion and let everyone breath a sigh of relief that there is an actual plan for the said planet.

Really? How do you know this? Because just saying it makes me wonder what Cryptic's mindset is.
When you say "done" what are you saying? That they are little shoeboxes of terrain skinned and with a painted sky? Is that "done"?
Since you seem to be privey to info the rest of us are not, maybe you can tell us if they plan to add anything that might make "places", like Vulcan and Risa, actually worth visiting. Like...cities? Maybe even cities with NPCs in them? Maybe cities that make you think there is more to this game than simply killing 5 mobs in yet another empty shoebox?
And you say they are "storing" these "done" planets for us because there isn't anything to do on them? Yet we are getting all this nifty game enhancing stuff like mini skirts and emotes. But, planets we can explore that add real immersion value, they are "stored" for some later purpose I guess.
Sigh, I swear, I just don't get the thinking at Cryptic. It seems ANYTHING that would really enhance this game is for ...later.
EDIT: Now that I think of it, why do we need to go to the planets in the Sol system at all. I envisioned the Sol system to simply be nicely skinned spheres that represent the planets as we presently know them as eye candy to fly past as we head to Earth dock. Landing on Mars or at other historical planetary landmarks (like Tranquility Base on the Moon) would be cool, but I don't see a need to create every planet's actual surface in the solar system.

Where did you get this information?
I got it from the engineering reports. The planets and the backgrounds are all skinned and ready but there's no missions to do there. The reason we get game enhancing things like "mini skirts" is because the people designing the mini-skirts are character artists, not content designers. Cryptic has about seven content designers working on missions but they're all slated for release in season 2, except children of Khan and a few other STFs.
They've been talking about adding missions in persistant areas and are designing a persistant area in the new sector block to reflect this but I think currently they're leaving Risa and Vulcan and Andoria as they are. I'm sure they'll revisit them later sometime.
I'm amazed STO has come this far then, all things considering. I do read the egineering reports, but some people catch things that others can't like Dr.Lovemonkey
I have a pretty ridiculous idea, could work. I know the Devs have an advisory council in place already, plus egineering reports, plus polls.
But what about a a specific forum (closed for comments) where the Devs talk amongst themselves about ideas, etc? Purely so we can see what they are talking about, etc. I know, too much information and people would hold them to whatever was discussed I suppose. I just get the feeling that while they obviously want to be transparent, but they don't understand their players needs/wants very well.

I have been there a couple of times while others have been running around also, and there is no option to initiate a duel, even in the "Beaconed" areas. So unless there is a method to start a duel with someone that involves something other then clicking on a duel opponent, I couldn't find it. Unless you engage them in a Trade war. (I can trade you more usless items then you can trade to me, I win )

Thanks for the reply. I missed this in the engineering reports somehow. I honestly don't see why we need missions on the Sol planets. I also can't really see landing on many of them as most are gas giants.
I think a scenic fly through with the option to land on Mars, the Moon, just for historical reasons, and that's about all that's needed.
That said, there is supposed to be cities on Mars and the Moon in this time period and Starships are built in orbit around Saturn (I believe).
Skipping Vulcan and Risa as well as Earth are mistakes in my book. The game is screaming for a "world" to explore and cities would help alot.
They really should add something into the NPC's conversation there to say "Hi, this area is currently under construction. For now, enjoy a look at what is to come!"
I guess that wouldnt be that hard to add..
Currently every new player stumbling over Andoria will start:
"Oh look duels.. nice...
*time passes*
Erm I still havent figured out how it works..
*runs around on the planet looking for a clue*
Depending on how much interessted the player is in duels he might look for a while to figure it out....
...at the end the player beams out with a bad feeling about either a bugged area something not finished or himself beeing to stupid to understand how to duel....
...whatever it is.. he does not know for sure.
Does that make you think better about a game or worse if there is a place with missleading info and no word about it ontop? This is one of the closest planets to sol system.. new players usualy see that very soon at the start left with..??

Too bad. Something like PvP friendly dueling could be a lot of fun and a nice shot in the arm for this game. Add a scoreboard, hold tournaments, etc.
