+% critical chance means you will have that extra percentage chance of hitting for a crit.
+# critical severity means that amount is added to the damage when you do crit.
I do wonder if the OP bought his account on ebay though as he arrived a couple of days ago, bought a lifetime and has asked the simplest of questions since for a player who should have been playing a couple of months.

Aww...again, why be a douche?
I've been playing since beta, I have my characters listed in my signature, and even I wasn't 100% sure.
Two people have answered the question. Neither were being what you called them. You, however, are being a bit aggressive and insulting.
At this point I wish you luck in discovering how game mechanics work on your own. Crit severity is one of the easier things to explore and test in-game.

A douche? Is that a personal insult? Hmm.
I was pointing out that this chap turned ip on the forums a couple of days ago and bought a lifetime. He then asked some of the simplest questions. Albeit with respect. He's genuinely learning. I t just struck me odd for an account so old to suddenly be on the forums needing all this new player help.

He has over 200 posts spanning nearly 3 months. He's not new to the forum just new to the MMO experience and unsure of many aspects of the MMOing subculture. When things come up that he needs to know about he asks. That's all there is to it.

In that case I stand corrected and apologise. It would have made me no less or more inclined to offer help, advice and opinion either way. It just appeared off to get the questions this weekend that you would expect from a player very new to the game.
It was not meant to be anything other than an observation and it's not for other people to be offended on his behalf.

hi Sir,
yes that's about it. I waited 35 years for this game ( yes I have foresight), and I intend to learn everything about it, no more no less.

Well, not surprised... the way the game info is handled; it confuses a lot of people. Something like Crit Severity is so obvious to those of us who have played multiple MMOs; but imagine someone playing their first MMO and seeing that. Then you have the +# and +% to add to the confusion.
Not even going to get into the skills you automatically learn as you level; with just a system message saying you're learned Captain Rank Skill whatever... Now for those who do not run with 2 skill tabs; the Captain Rank skills for ground can easily be missed. I've known a couple people who did not know they had Security Escort, Orbital Strike or Nanoprobe Infestation.
Hey folks, let's keep this civil and friendly!
Some players might actually decide to stay with STO for the longer term due to the quality and especially friendliness of our forums!
I've been playing since Open Beta on a casual basis, and I have no idea what + Critical is...
The main problem is STO gameplay guts documentation is simply missing from Cryptic...
I for one is simply holding back, waiting for all the game balances (read: nerfs) to kick in, wait for the dust to settle, hopefully by then I'll be Rear Admiral, with a pocketful of unspent Skill Points, then ask questions, then decide what to spend the skill points on (and playing this gimped make you stronger player too)...
My dumb question is - does the + Crit severity and + Crit Chance apply to ALL firing weapons once I have just one weapon with those stats equipped - or does the higher chance crit apply/occur only with THAT weapon?

If it is a weapon that gives +Crit severity/chance it only affects this one weapon. You can see this if you open the Attack Tab in the ship status window and (un)equip a weapon with + crit sev/chance. Nothing will change there. Now if you activate a skill with +Crit severity/chance you will see a change there.
Else a cruiser fully equipped with weapons +Crit severity/chance which affect all weapons might be a bit overpowered.

When you hit critically, the amount of damage your crit lands for is +##% whats not to understand?
wut?
it's legitimate question.
If I have an item that's +40 Critical Severity, what exactly does that mean?
Do I have 40 additional damage added to the crit?
Is the crit 40% more than a normal crit?
It's not like the tooltips help any.
