Is interest in PvP declining?

I play PvP everyday. I love it, but over the last few days I've noticed there's been a real drop off in the number of people doing pvp. I see a lot of the same people and often I'll end up in scenes by myself or with just one or two others.

Recently I just seem to be fighting the same group of Klingons and fighting with the same Feds, and the scenes seem to be taking longer to pop. There are long waits sometimes to even get a pvp mission. Worse yet, even the Klingons don't seem to be queuing that much.

I'm concerned, because I love pvp and it's one of the primary reasons I'm playing the game. Is anyone else noticing this? Is it just a bit of an aberration over the last week or so?

Personally, I just do the dailies and that's it. I'm waiting for more development that would make PVP more compelling, such as:
    • (tweaked versions of) the ability and system changes advertised on the Tribble Test Shard
    • better matchmaking, better queue system
    • better team system (so we can see and communicate with our entire side in a match)
    • better itemisation (some of which is on Tribble Test Shard)
    • more/different objective-based maps
    • slower combat, more reaction time

So until some of the above gets pushed to Holodeck, I will just be doing the dailies and saving the Marks in the hope that, eventually, I will have something worthwhile to buy.

Yeah, I've had the same experience recently.

The last couple of weeks have been that way in various tiers-- at least for ground. One would think that the weekends would have many more people in the ques.. but it just doesnt seem like it did, say last month.

But then again, pvp itself has changed considerably in the last few weeks.

I've tried several tiers and it seems that the RA tier which is where most people are at currently is the most populated. LT and LT Cmdr are the worst IMO. I feel that there is not enough stress put into PVP and maybe if they made it a requirement, i.e. a mission similar to the Daily, that you must complete before advancing we may see the population and interest grow. Again...just my opinion.

I'm playing two tiers, atm. Tier 4 and tier 1. Almost to tier 5 on one of my characters. Maybe things will be better in tier 5. I hope so.

Frankly, I'm a little concerned about the game. Sure, I'd expect some drop off after initial release, but it's not a good sign if neither side can field a full team for pvp.

Just look at these forums... There aren't a whole lot of people posting, at least not compared to 2 weeks ago.

I think allot of casual players got tired of the "I WIN" buttons. Hopefully future updates will address balance in PvP.

I would put money on it.

Only the regulars /coughfreakscough are what I see in the ques lately.

The ONLY reason I PVP at all is to get marks of honor. And by the time I am done with my PVP daily to get them I am so fed up with all the ways I can be effectively instakilled without any ability to retaliate that I question whether or not the marks are worth the frustration.

The marks should be an incentive to try PVP. The gameplay in PVP should be what is bringing me back every day. That isn't happening.

This is exactly what happens when powers can be exploited or stacked so high that you can do nothing but die instantly. People get tired of it and find other things to do... or other games to do.

People will defend the broken abilities to high heaven.. even when eventually they are the only people left in the queue.

Then they can all just have a gimp fest with each other with tons of instant pop goodness.

    Exactly right.

I enjoy the PVP in this game, but that's in the lower queues, where the OP instakill/permahold stuff is less of a factor. In the higher tiers, it seems that it's the same people who take themselves too seriously and do nothing but pit FOTM against FOTM over and over again and then start drama on the forums. Until the abilities are fixed and actual skill takes place in T5 I won't bother with it.

I was looking forward to PvP, but space PvP requires so much cookiee cutting to maximize your "I Win" and "I don't die" buttons that it all feels alike. I'm not that nuts about queing for arena type PvP anyway.. I'd have more love for it if it has shifting fronts in the Star Trek universe, like the system WAR has in place. Would be a lot easier to feel attached.

That aside, I've been queing for ground pvp and it just isn't happening right now for some reason.

Because ground is worse. It is spammed exposes and holds.

You die so fast it makes space combat seem long.

I won't touch it and none of my friends do either.

Rifle butt. Dear god. People have figured out how frustrating 2 guys running up and spamming the 3 key is to the enemy team. I can take the stupid science kit, that at least has a cool down. And hey! The player spent resources to use the power effectively! At the cost of other things!

But yeah, even at BG/RA hitting the chum melee attack on a ranged weapon that benefits from no skills defines the entire game.

top all of it off, with only 4 maps per type of pvp, it gets old before you even get to BG.

get into a premade with friends, seriously. it really helps to keep a persons interest in pvp.

Worse than that, half the maps are not even played, because they are at the bottom of the list and nobody queues for them.

And why do we need large and small versions of some maps? That is just a waste of queue space. SIMPLIFY IT.

Hence why I suggested the queue should just be game type and then the map chosen randomly like dozens of popular games do successfully.

And joining a friend or two for pvp is fine and all, but it does not address the underlying things people are feeling here.........

    the feeling of staleness.

I've been trying to get a premade going on the fed side, but it's hard to muster enough players for a team.

join the organizedpvp channel, you can find some of the best of the best looking for groups whenever their main groups are unavailable. Just ask if someone needs a fed "whatever ship you are" or if anyone wants to group for pvp (vent usually not required).

it's important to note that not all premades need to be 5 people in order to start, you can get a few friends and just go have fun (although, occasionally pugs tend to split hairs). I got into a really good pug/premade last night with 2 of my friends.

I have to disagree. That's how I started pvp'ing, with fleetmates on vent during the grind. Maybe if the space pvp was more like swg back during the pre cu and cu era. This map has cookie cutter combat. Feds fly around in big circles beam arraying, and klingons fly in smaller circles keeping their nose to a fed. Then there is the cookie cutter map system. Yay, all 4 of them. Then there is the problem with the devs listening to every single nerf call made from the forums. Jesus, has no one learned the lesson of swg? Don't listen to the players on the forums. They kill your game.

I don't think anyone important takes the forums nearly as seriously as everyone thinks.

The point I was trying to make though is that good friends can influence your stay in a game more than anything else.

Play it for the people not for the game.

    SWG taught me that.

Besides. PvP in this game is fun ^^

Bloody RL I've not had the chance to log on for 3 days I'm gettin DT's

Ive noticed a drop off, but I think its mainly because Space pvp has turned into " Escort Wars"

Ive never seen so many escorts flying since STO came out.

    Its insanity lol :D

Personally, I find that lately space PvP has become a cheese fight, who can bring the largest cheese into the fight.

There are few tactics left. It's no longer about 2 ships or more fighting each other, where the timing of BO powers used is important or a mistimed attack or power will lose you a fight.

Now it's mostly about how high you can stack your cheese and unload it in 2 seconds.

It makes sense that the lower tiers are going to become more and more sparse, as everyone moves up to T5, there will eventually only be there rare totally new person, or an already established person doing a new alt in the lower tiers.

Which makes me wonder, when they finally add the next playable faction, presumably Romulans, and we all go make our Rommie Alt, who are we going to play?? There will be very few Feds and Klingons in the lower tiers to do PvP with.

I disagree. One can also make several alts on one side, if u have time enough ofcourse. If u don't have the time, and u only play on popular times, their are always some PvP matches to be found, at any rank.

In my opinion and experience, I see a lot of original KFD trying Fed and a lot of Fed trying KDF. This versatile group will keep breathing life into STO for a month of two I am guessing. If Cryptic then still has not come up with significant content changes(PvE) or vast, new maps for PvP, my beloved Star Trek will burn even before any season 2 update hits the market.

Our fleet has found less and less Feds in Space pvp, and even less in ground pvp. I think what has happened is that since most people are not pvpers, they get discouraged when they lose to Fleets that know what they are doing in pvp. So u end with a only a small group of the player base willing to Q up.
