stop listening to hardcore pvp gamers, they are ruining every game they come across by turning it into a variation of counter strike... which sucks. the game aswell as the situation.
people want a game not a pvp server, and the idiots only want a pvp server because their cruddy little pvp games died as it became monotonous drab of run shoot kill/die repeat.
i dont want anything new, ide like them to fix bugs first, and work on more details ... like having roads in colonies (like i posted in another thread), fixing it so that i can see all buffs and debuffs, and not like atm NO debuffs and half the buffs. Having an klingon icon for engineers on your away team select window (there's a tactical symbol and science, but if you have an engi there's just a blank space in front of it when you wanna beam down)
Also not having enemies INSIDE buildings (or a way to get inside would be even better) or on the roof .. but thats just silly.
ooooo and, when entering an explore mission, actually being able to get the mission would be nice aswell, instead of just .. nothing and an empty zone, or nothing and you can see groups of enemies and know what to do but then get no bonus xp at the end cuz you werent able to accept any mission at start.
fix that ..... and ill be infinitely more satisfied.

Ooooo, you shouldn't say things like that...
You are gonna get all the people in the trailer park all mad.
I agree with this, WAR is a perfect example. The game started with something for everyone, but the developers started listening to five or six counter strike kids and they went from sixty servers to just three now, and they still haven't learned..the last producers letter told people they were killing the last vestiges of PVE for their "core" gamer...yeah all eight of them.
PVPers are basically like the Borg, they show up make demands and after the PVE game is either gone or Borked beyond all repair thanks to their incessant yelling for nerfs,, they move on to the next game, and the developer is left scratching his head wondering what he did wrong.
What you did wrong was listen to them in the first place.

tbh i havent seen to much of a focus on pvp on the side of cryptic here, and even the polls said pvp was like the least looked after feature to improve ... any link pointing me towards inc pvp revamps or pve nerfs i need to see and be worried about now ? :P
I completely agree with the OP. So true that PVP focus ruins the actual purpose of the game, which was to imerse the player into the star trek universe with a dynamic and growing storyline.

Read the 21st installment of ask Cryptic, read the numerous dev post trying to placate crying PVPers Google is your friend, posting link or it didn't happen doesnt defuse the issue.
I've done PvP in the beginning, Klingon side, and it didn't do much for me, tho I'll still get into some sometime. it's PvE i much preferr, and if true, the those 8 PvPers won't let us have PvE. why would the devs even listen to such a minorty in the first place, anyway, cuz they're the lifers?

I don't think they are I'm a new player and even I'm concerned at the almost kowtowing Cryptic seems to be doing to the PVPers...and now we have this whole ST is PVP cult demanding ST have open PVP. And in MMO development unless you make your case early and loudly you could log in one day to your favorite MMO and it has become Counter Strike with swords like WAR.

Just go to the search function and type in "nerf klingon" or nerf science"
also "nerf healing", "PVP balance" and "science console" will pick up a lot of hits.
Cryptic seems to be listening, but all the wrong people are talking.
Well IMO until now Cryptic has done an awesome job listening to community feedback. Also I have never seen this amount of communication going on.
And while Cryptic may have had some problems how they told us what they where doing, what they did was pretty awesome.
The idea of having a council representing the player base which is not on the message boards was a great one. Of course they could have imagined the outcry because suddenly the people on the message boards felt that the game was not only made for them - but beware - also the majority which does not post here
It seems that Cryptic has made only one mistake so far. They underestimated the amount of human greed, fear and elitism.
But fortunately this had not a big effect on their design decisions until know.
It is sad that they had to rush out this game in such a short time. If they had four times the missions they have now and a good random mission generator for their explorations missions, the game would have shaken the MMO world.
However, I hope in a year from now this game will keep my interest for a longer time than now
Possibly Cryptic is listening because the PvP'ers are the only ones talking?
Speaaking of PvP, out of boredom I made a KLingon this weekend and played up to LC1. I had a blast in PvP games over the weekend. It was alot of fun and didn't go at all like I expected. I even killed more than I died.
While I too share the feelings that PvP can ruin a game do to its narrow point of view on powers and thier usage, Cryptic doesn't seem to be listening exclusively to them and knows that it has a huge fanbase in the genre that they need to make happy. Frankly I think they were just overwhelmed by how much the game needs to expand to make everybody happy and are sufferring from induced-growing pains trying to placate everybody.
On the note of an open PvP zone, I would like one in the game as well. Mainly for the Nuetral Zones and for areas of wild space where no one faction has control.
There are only two significant types of players: casual and hardcore. Both of them pay the same amount of money to play a game and casual players invariably outnumber hardcore players. So why do so many game designers cater primarily to the minority of players? It certainly causes games to be less fun than they could and simple business rules will tell you that catering to the majority will earn you more money.
MMOs are businesses first and foremost, it needs a ton of investment in time and money to create an MMO and many of them flop quite badly. Blizzard have proved with World of Warcraft that it is possible to pull in a huge number of players and make a gajillion bucks with a well designed game that caters to a wide variety of needs. But so many MMOs that followed after WoW, the so called WoW-Killers were so laughably poor that hardly anyone bothered to play them, and this was because they were aimed at the hardcore players. Hardcore players are a niche market and there already a ton of MMOs out there that cater to them, trying to get a foothold in a niche market is notoriously difficult but these companies keep on coming, wasting their investors money on being the next big thing.
Studies have shown (CITATION NEEDED) that when asked what parts of a game players are interested in only 1% (CHECK FACTS) are interested in high end hardcore gaming. Yet for most MMOs all the designers talk about is the high end game and how leet it will be.
To make the best profit out of an MMO a designer needs to cater for the casual player, there are more casual players than hardcore players, and more players overall means more profit. How obvious do I need to spell this out: catering to the casual player will reap its rewards tenfold whereas catering to the hardcore player is a matter of chance. Do you want to be the popular and acclaimed game designer of a top selling MMO or do you want to be the guy who spent five years building a game that sank without a trace?
maybe they should make it so that random events happen to your ship and that you have to solve the riddles within the upcoming interiors ... like in the series
more "distress calls" leading you to known systems to help out would be nice aswell
Being able to build a colony is something i personally would love to see, been posted already
weeding out the tons of bugs in the random explore missions would also make my day :P
The only crying I have seen so far is about the Science Console nerf that is reportedly happening. I'm not sure if this is coming form PVP side or PVE side of the house. Certainly I'm sure SCI Officers are getting PO'd about it.
Two nights ago, I was doing some PVP....having a great time....even when I died and our side lost....But in one battle I had two Sci / Sci ships alternate an ability that put all of my abilities off-line for 30 seconds a pop.
30 seconds.....pilot one goes to cool down......second pilot hits me......another 30 seconds.......I'm trying to hold on with my escort with no skills available......run, send shields to aft.....start getting skills back.....1st pilot has cooled down, hit me again.........Dead!!
Sure we could have done the same thing, if our team had the same make up, but it essentailly gave their team an "I win" button. They went 15 / 0 that round.
Second round, they lost one of their Scis, and we won 15 / 9.....That is a big difference, not just because we won, but because it was at least close.

That's what I've been wondering myself here recently. I realize that Cryptic had these STF missions in the works for some time, but they (the missions) focus on a very small percent of the player base being able to play them. Dstahl's recent multiple comments "how would we make this work as a team" to every attempt by the player base to HELP Cryptic fix some of the low content issues have been causing great angst among the casual gamer base. Now I realize the following numbers are purely fictitious, but what would Cryptic rather have? A hardcore gamer active subscription base (not including lifetime because their money is long spent) of 50K people, or a happy casual gamer subscription base comprised of ST nerds, and dreamers numbering in the 100s of thousands? Now I'm no statistician, but I think I represent a large swath of the player base... I work 40+ hours a week, I'm a technology geek for intents & purposes, I'm over 40 years old, and I grew up with Star Trek! When I get home from work I still have lots of things to do.... So when I finally have time to sit down to play with my computer.... I don't what to have to sit around waiting play this game when I have a fully capable bridge crew that I've spent the past several weeks building/training.
Sorry I realize this thread is about PvP play, but the quoted poster really said what I've been dying to say!
I posted what I think would be a good idea to improve the game http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2599284#post2599284 and it's quite long, apart from the troller that posted I think it contains some good idea's that I have discussed with quite a few players and hope at least some get implemented.
I agree, I like the casual play style this allows but I finally canceled my account.
I enjoy the game, but it presently does not fit what I look for in a MMOG.
The missions have no variation, there really is no instances to go in with a group that are very unique.
The crafting system is non-existent. Exploration is really not there. I don't get the feel of wanting to look around the next corner as i do in other MMOGS.
It was entertaining for what it was worth but after hitting 42 and then re-starting a new class, I hit 6 before I felt like i was just spinning my wheels.
Hopefully they take some of the feedback and criticisms to heart and expand on what they have but overall it is a fun game to play for a short time, but the ability to keep someone coming back for more and more other than PvP just is not here....yet.
PvP is cheap, easy and fast. By contrast, PvE content takes time to develop, and time is money. PvE requires the development of zones, NPCs, quest steps, rewards, and other mission related content.
With a game that was essentially dead on arrival, which route do you realistically expect Atari to go?
First of all, there aren't that many hardcore PvP'ers in this game. I was PvPing this weekend and never saw more than maybe 10 klingons in the RA queues...yes, there were more feds than that, but IMO the hardcore PvPers are generally playing the PvP faction.
Aside, from that, how are "they" ruining the game? My guess is that this is another complaint about the science skill and console nerfs, but without specifics this comes across as yet another rant.
1.bunny hops
2.knife kills
3.headshots
4.killing sprees
5.uber taunts
6.weapons equipped with "i win" buttons
7. super secret sniper spots
8. pocket healers
9. wall hacks
10.deadly space dominance, you suck, don't mess with me or i'll taunt your mama "i win" button that you can never use or I'll cry.
That should cover it but I'm sure there's more....
If i truly wanted all these things I'd play MW2 or something like it. I liked the turf wars in WHO but I can clearly see and remember how that killed an otherwise decent game. Well that and a lacking endgame,
basically it was FULL of bugs but that's another story....

I second this. Your OP's rants against PvPers as the cause for issue are illogical. Those of us who PvP can't even get a queue system that works right or the mission to end when one sides leaves the map. We get nothing from the difficulty slider or death penalty, so how are we the ones causing issues???
What the PvPers do want are simple: Klingons finished, a queue system that works, penalties for ditching on maps, and in the future, some Realm vs Realm would be nice. How do what we want change your whole PvE experience?
Yeah, I'm not to sure exacltly what the OP is complaining about here. I don't see what is wrong with people wanting some meaningful PvP in this game. There is a definite lack of stuff to do at RA5, and some open world RvR PvP would add some much needed content. If you don't want to participate that is fine, but please don't say people are ruining your game for wanting something added that is certainly missing.
This topic also brings up a topic. Why do they have a entire sector for PVP when you don't even need to enter the sector to even play PVP.
I don't believe Cryptic is just listening to the PVPers. I think they are doing a good job of listening to everyone. Cryptic is listening, what other MMO out there can say that.
One group, I believe they are listening to much to is the Lifetimers (Which I'm one of), but most of the lifetimers are either the hard core whack jobs or believe Cryptic is making a game just for them or believes everyone plays the game the same why they do so what they want in the game is the best thing to do.
I'm so much more interested in a laid back fun experience, not hardcore PVP arenas or end game raids. Being able to join a fleet action in progress is a great feature, and something a game like WoW could learn a lot from (which caters heavily to PvP arena and end-game raiders).
This game out the door has more RP-promoting features than WoW has in what, almost 6 years of life cycle? It seems silly, but the ability to write my character bio in game, bios for my BOs, make captain's personal logs, name my ship, pick my ship designation number, etc etc... These are awesome features, and I'd love to see things like that expanded upon.
The focus should be a fun and casual environment, because really, it's all about Trek, which with a TV show structure, is really about a casual, laid back experience.
