I was playing for a few hours when my sound went out during the game. I closed the game and checked my PC because I have had issues in the past with games and sound issues and discovered that my PC no longer had sound either.
Things I did to trouble-shoot
Checked to see if the sound was muted using MS Volume Control dialog (dbl-click on speaker icon in tray).
Checked to see if the sound card drivers were still working correctly using MS Device Manager thru Control Panel.
As yet, I still have no sound, which I would like fixed ASAP.
I would like to
contact support by phone
Star Trek Online seems to take some time to get back to their customers when submitting a bug online (which I have done a week ago). This issue is a bit more urgent to me than waiting days or weeks for a reply.

- On XP: click the Start button -> Run -> type dxdiag into the box and press enter.
- On Vista / Win 7: click the Start button -> type dxdiag into the search box and press enter
After the DXdiag finishes running check the sound tabs for errors. Also it might be worth saving the information to a txt file and zipping it up then attaching it to your post, or copying the contents to something like pastebin ( http://pastebin.com/ ) so we can have a look and see if there's anything obvious.
If there's no sign of any errors, one thing you could try while you wait is uninstall your sound drivers, then reboot your PC, go to your motherboard (if onboard sound) or soundcard manufacturer's website, download the latest drivers available for your setup and install those.
Unlikely they'll answer it at all, the fact that the audio doesn't work outside of the game excludes STO as the root cause of the issue. Their tech support only answers problems with the game itself, not your PC. They can go over basic stuff (Is mute checked in the volume controls?, Are you using Speakers as the output device?, Did your cat eat the audio output cable?, etc.) but anything involving diagnosis is beyond their scope.
Once sound is working with your PC again outside of running STO then they can help if you still can't hear anything. Divide and conquer... get Windows back to playing sound again first.
