Star Trek Online 90 Day Review

Current State of the Game:

Most of the things I am going to talk about have been batted around several forums now and I guess I am putting my two cents worth in now. Currently you can play the entire Star Trek Online game in 3 weeks. If you decide to level all three Federation classes about 8 weeks, now if you want to play on the Klingon side of things be prepared to play lots of PvP action and while you can level at a fair rate in PvP, and you can survive the repetition of the grind then you are all set.

Mostly the game is a breeze to play with little to no complexity, if you need directions, look at the map or read the quest. In truth you go from system to system with little to know surprises. The sector blocks have huge bill boards telling you where you are and where you can go, the sector blocks in space have massive grid lines to make sure that you don't get vertigo and don't get lost. Don't kid yourselves, this in not exploration no matter how you spin it.

Let's say that many of the basic things in the game are awesome, like the graphics, space and ships and toons are incredible, or should I mention the size scaling issue here? The artists and designers can be proud of the work they have done. The weapons and particle effects are as good as any game on the market today. The space scenery is outstanding! Although the corkscrewing flight system is totally stupid and it looks like there is no room for a joy stick leaving everyone I know wondering what happened to space flight in the last several hundred years?

However, the new raids are good and challenging, requiring both team work and planning, more please!

“Infected”

“Cure”

“Khitamore Accord”

What would be incredible would be a 5, 10, 15 and 20 man scalable raid system.

Fleet actions are fun and challenging more please! Except for the Crystalline Entity which is a total failure in how it is done, find a different way to kill it the current method is not viable.

Diversity is a huge problem in the game. Exploration clusters have few differences, and while they give needed badges for ship upgrades, they do not provide enough satisfaction in the area of exploration. If you repeat the same cluster quest with a random selection of at least 6 or 8 types of quests and these are space sample retrieval, scanning miscellaneous items on the ground, ground fighting, space fighting, computer scanning, ship defending in space and base defending in space, these come with postage stamp planets the ground missions are put on, run here, scan or kill, run there, scan or kill. How about a picnic or a holodeck adventure.

I wonder if the mandate for Star Fleet is really travel to strange new places never seen before and kill everything. I did my B'Tran Cluster dailies this morning and they where all space confrontation missions. Each of the ships were cruisers of at least 500 personal each, and doing 3 missions that's 18 ships at around 500 people a kill 500(18) = 9000 people in one morning. No survivors, I am a killing machine with no remorse or hesitations. Is this the Star Trek I remember? Is this a representation of the future that I want to be a part of? Kill kill kill?
What is missing from the Game:

Exploration is not part of this game. Everything is easy to find and there is no surprises waiting on the other side of the planet because there is only a small postage stamp of land and the rest is, well, just not available. I would have like to find each system with scanners and probes and chart everything on my own or in a group.

Many things seemed to have been left out of the game, crafting, actual planets and complexity. Is this by design or by time constraints? I do not know or care. Of course there are many other things left out of the game, things like being able to explore large planets, asteroids, nebula clouds, stars, gas giants volcanic or ice planets or any actual sized planet. I can only point my tricorder at so many things before I just want to throw my tricorder and everything. Hey! I just broke my tricorder can I take to a craftsmen and get an upgrade or mod or maybe some cool new one that makes different beeps and noises when I find something different?

Where are the plants and animals, could we clone them, breed and train, buy and sell? What about mining for minerals, for crafting, trading, selling, or chemically treating and processing them for better configurations and products for armor, weapons and space ships? Everything in the game could and should be made by the players. What about plasma production, plasma mining, buy and selling? Bio-genetics, growing specimens for study, for medical harvesting, for making better pets or mounts or perhaps even parts for vehicles?

What about the ship internals? All internal ship activities must be integrated in to the ship no instance hoping. I want to be able to go to my shuttle bay and get in my shuttle then fly to an asteroid and take up mining or take chucks of rock off it or melt it in to a ball and tow it back to my ship. I guess that would bring up that size scaling issue/feature again.
How long can we keep playing the game?

There are quests in the game that you show up and kill and blow up and destroy without even bothering to look for survivors or escape pods or taking prisoners. Another one is you go kill a bunch of ships with people on them, looking for some type of mineral to find out the asteroids don't have the minerals you want and all the ships with people on them you destroyed for nothing. What ever happened to negotiation and diplomacy, getting mining rights and make some cash for both parties. I was not aware of the gunboat diplomatic corps in Star Fleet.

Why can't I just click on a chair and sit down?

As RA 5 my biggest thrill in the game is to fly in circles around my target using my thumb to repetitively push the space bar over and over and over until I almost fall asleep or my opponent explodes and I wake back up... well to be honest my Bridge Officers do have specials that I must use to survive with and they are helpful most times. Do we really need BO's any way?

Why in the instance of the Borg Hunt map there are Sphere's Probe's and Cube's stuck in the encrypted Nods all the time? Why not just put turrets in there instead? Or is this a bug that can't be fixed or did I mean feature?

I never expected to get to RA 5 in two weeks. I usually take my time and hopefully in 6 months or a year I get to max level and have tons of fun doing it. This game is fun for 2 weeks then there is nothing much else to do but grind dailies for badges, do some raids, help some Fleet members that have not quit the game yet.

There are no presets, like “Standard Orbit Mr. Sulu.” and the ship goes to a standard orbit on a planet, or combat sets or ground combat sets.

As a Star Trek fan for more than 40 years I am not sure how much more simplicity of this game I can take, my 8 year old nephew is all ready bored and is going back to WoW.

What could be next?

That's coming in May. It's on the calendar and engineering reports.
Do we really need BO's any way?

When you change the setting to Elite (which is going live very soon) you will not only stop falling asleep, you will find that you need every BO skill and most of your own captain skills. Get those hot-buttons ready.
Or is this a bug that can't be fixed or did I mean feature?

Their first attempt to fix it was during Common Ground patch. It didn't fix it.
    What could be next?

Check the calendar and the engineering reports.

Have they added more hotkeys yet? Or is the max still 30?

I have to agree about the difficulty slider. I tried Elite on my Tac Lt3 and it was a pain in the butt to kill a battleship, and taking out 3 Birds of Prey at once was thrilling. It felt much more frenetic and tactical than any other fights I've been in since the game started.

As for the rest of it: they're working on a lot of it. Search the forums for topics about them.

I'm impressed as hell with the difficulty slider tho. More so than anything to date.

We all know Kirk would kill 9000 Gorn - by himself!

It'd just take 9000 yellow shirts and 9000 ounces of tanning lotion.

Some one just reminded me that I left out stuff about Fleet management and dates not working and no notes or reminders or an in game calendar which would be nice but at this point, beggars can't be choosers...

It's on test. It will be going live with the next patch. By the 30th according to the calendar. It still has some bugs. It still needs some tweaks. But sometime in the next week or so it should be live and playable.

you claim the infected and the cure and khitomer accords are "challenging" that isnt the word i would use i would go with "broken". Ive done a lot of similar raid missions and they never felt more broken than doing the cure or infected.

I know the borg are meant to be tough but there is hard and then there is overpowered.

Chain dying 20 30 times on a single mission means there is somthing wrong, dying once due to bad playing i can understand but actually chain dying over and over throughout the mission. having to spend 5 minutes running back to your team to have them die that isnt well designed in my book.

    How do you mean Broken?

In Magic the Gathering, Broken's usually a good thing for the player. Bad for the game's designers.

Unfortunately,if you knew (I WISH I HAD) Craptic track record you would know that this game would be a flop, and this game WILL NEVER be StarTrek,i said it before and i will say it again, this game was build on an engine that WAS BUILD for ground combat and super hero stuff,it has it's limitations, the primary beeing totally instanced,so you wont get your ship interiors in just one Instance...space will always feel like a shoe box.
This is just a pseudo Space game with a starTrek Name on it...
For me...right now the game is Fail,as my fleet members continue to cancel and leave the game and going back to WOW and EVE,and we do alot in fleet...but still,we can only do so much in the game before people get fed up.
I really made a leap of faith by getting the LTS,so either way i am stuck on this boat,i want to be proven wrong,i want them to prove me and alot of players that we are wrong, that this game is not fail and that it will BE STARTREK,not holding my breath.....but i wont spend one more cent on this game, thats for sure.

At university when i studied games design i read a lot of design documents, one of the key issues with design is making somthing challenging to the player if its not challenging it isnt fun.

However you shouldnt just kill the player with no means to counter it, for one its frustating and the other it generally confuses the player. They think "have i done somthing wrong" and they spend time working on how to solve it.

In both the cure and infected they have mechanics in place which will kill the player with no means to counter it.

The plasma flooring in the infected room is a prime example if it did a lot of damage BUT not so much that you can make it to a platform that would be acceptable, In Warhammer there is a similar room in land of the dead with a similar mechanic to the infected end room. Yes the floor will kill you if you remain standing still you have enough time to get to safety and get healed up. In the infected room its litterally BOOM your dead.

Thats frustrating to a player especially as the controls for jumping and moving are not really the best for instance double tapping forward will cause you to do a forward roll and you can do this accidentally moving to the edge of a platform. Also while levelign up you NEVER encounter this mechanic anywhere else in the game.

The other issue is the whole Forcefield on the door and plasma fires its made so if you accidentally release you cant get back in (yes i know you can roll through the forcefield but thats not intentional).

IN the cure the transformers spawn elites which by nature are pretty hard to drop, not only that but you have to contend with chain roots, dots that interupt , holds stuns and mobs that aoe as well as if you turn your back to try and run away they will normally one shot you.

The mechanic is set up so you have to try and ignore these other mobs and concentrate on the worker mobs who respawn very quickly on top of being insta ganked by the other borg drones.

Chain dying in these missions is a sign that somthing is wrong, to sum it up i did Kigagilik in champions online i died once due to being too close when he aoe'd, i did the destroyer many a time and i think i died a few times but thats because i wasnt being healed OR i hadnt blocked.

In Dark age of camelot i knew if the dragon looked at me i had to run in the oposite direction of my team mates OR they would die. The infected the borg queen shoots you with a blue laser you may not notice it because you dont realise the next thing you know you have wiped your team and the ENTIRE instance resets.

Thats not fun its not meant to punish you so extreamly for failing due to attacks which

    1. cant be blocked
    2. have no means to be mitigated

    Thats broken in my book.

Make somthing challenging by thinking about it carefully, dont just grab a hand ful of overpowered mobs and force the player to fight through hoardes and hoardes of them. Thats the sort of tactic they use in Serious Sam but at least they give you the tools to deal with it.

Infected isn't all that challenging once you get it down. Same with Cure and probably the other raids. They just require a lot of teamwork. I would use "challenging" and not "broken".

to expect a player to pick somthing up they have never done before and do it right first time is poor design.

it would be akin to working in a office for 30 years then one day the boss just thinks up a new job hands it to you and expects you do it right first time with no training and no understanding of the job.

O and if you dont do it correctly 100% the first time your fired and loose your pension.

Bad analogy. You know why? Because you can pick up the mission once every 20 hours. Rather, "Your boss gives you a new job on top of the other things you need to do, if you don't complete the new job, you don't get paid for that job, but you can still try again the next day."

so your saying if you spent 5 hours on a job you didnt understand and failed and the boss said ok your not getting paid try again tommorow. would you really be prepared to attempt it again ?

i do enjoy the raids the storys are excellent its just let down by poor game mechanics a simple tweak to the borg drones would make the whole experience more fun but as it stands its a chore and games are meant to be fun.

Compared to Cure, Infected is a cake walk; unlike Cure, Infected can be four manned. My fleet has almost gotten the completion time to an hour not counting breaks. I've completed Infected 4/6 times and Cure 1/2 times. So, yes, I did attempt it again. Why? Because I think the raids are very fun.

Even though we spent hours the first time we did the raids and we didn't beat it, it was still really fun to play.

I can certainly understand your situation, but I would like to put somethings in perspective for you.

The current level of game development:

The game developers had a short window in which to develop, market, and produce the current game. They had to basically start a new company with in a company to develop the game. This requires a tremendous amount of capital investment on Cryptic Studio. I think they were wise in bringing out the game in slow intervals. When SWG or Star Wars Galaxies, came out, it had a ton of features, the game developers were not ready for. In my opinion, they try to do to many things in the beginning.

From a marketing point, I do not think they needed to do much here, Star Trek is the most popular Genre of any genre on the planet. However, they can do a better job of getting box sets to Wal-mart, Best Buy, and other retail outlets. When I walk into these stores, I have to look all over the place to even find a box of the game or anyone in the store that even knows the game has been released.

While it is good you were able to do all the main missions in three weeks, some of us have not been. It took me from the beginning of February to the end of March to make Admiral 5. I have found plenty to keep me busy in the game since I have made admiral, and have yet to even start any of the new story content that have been released.

With explorations missions, the system you describe and yearn for is basically the holodeck on the Enterprise. They do not have that capability at Cryptic yet. It will probably take a fan base of 20 million subscribers to make any thing like that possible. Also, it takes a long time to turn out new content. The fact they have been releasing new content about every three weeks is a game first for me. I have never seen any mmorpg do that. Most games have one major release a year and 2 to 3 minor ones in a year.

The fact Cryptic launched to major Game titles in the span of 8 months is incredible. The launch of this game was one of the better online game launches I have been part of. They have some major customer service issues to overcome though.

I think they should have employees that are actual commanders in the game who fly around and interface with all the major fleets in the game.

About chain dying. I have been running around DS-9 the past two weeks offering medical services, but you know, I feel most people die allot in the fleet action from just being "stupid." As a medical offer, I have healed many people in the zone, only to have the same idiot go run through another plasma fire and go stand next to the entire group to catch the teams on fire. Then they have the Gaul to stand there and act like every one else is wrong.

And some people are under the impression the medical tricorder does not have a cool-down on heals.

I don't think there is anyway for Cryptic to resolve poor game playing techique.

While it is good you were able to do all the main missions in three weeks, some of us have not been. It took me from the beginning of February to the end of March to make Admiral 5. I have found plenty to keep me busy in the game since I have made admiral, and have yet to even start any of the new story content that have been released.

Did I mention that there are no neutral players, planets or systems? Maybe I just want to be a rice farmer on Psi Alpha 7 or a gold miner on Regulas moon or have a house on an asteroid somewhere? Maybe that is what I want too. Even then maybe I want to be an engineer on a garbage hauler or freight runner selling goods between systems? Oh, wait they all ready have an npc to do that... i wanted that job. Be careful when you mention SWG it has a tendency to bring out the mmo wolves and when they smell blood they don't relent.

Chairs. In May. It's on the schedule. And has been talked about in engineering reports since dstahl started them. Chairs and sitting. On its way.

People like that just want to complain. They're not interested in facts.
