Since there are some pretty massive balancing and even game design changes coming down the pipe for the next major patch, are we going to get a free respec to go along with it? It seems well in line with the amount of change that CO provided respecs for.
Respeccing your BO's abilities doesn't cost that many merits.
The changes to science officers aren't really worth worrying about respecs.
That leaves ... the changes to purple weapons.
But by the time you do enough dailies to fully purple your ship out, you should be good enough on merits to affording a respec the old fashioned way.
I have plenty of merits and banked tokens to respec my characters. It's a question of policy, whether the (IMO good) policy set forth with CO will be a general one for Cryptic.
Given what's to come, there is no real need for respecing unless you want to stop using Anti Proton and use those points for something else, while you go back to your favorite weapon types.
However, Anti Proton still has higher Critical Damage stats than the others.
Well when they change the power levels around (Aux no longer affects turning, Shields having resistance based on power levels), I think that alone should warrant a free respec.

Cryptic stated Free Respec with every update that changed Skilltrees.. Update 1.1 dows not change skill trees.. It may alter abilities, but not your skill trees.. as such.. respecs are on us the players.
It may not cost a lot but I still want the free respec
Be glad then that Cryptic's not like CCP, where you get one free respec PER RL YEAR, with no way to buy one..
Cryptic's policy on respec tokens is like that of most other MMOs - a major change to the skill tree (which 1.1 is NOT) warrants a respec for those characters involved - and that's it. NOT on a power change, NOT on a balancing pass - ONLY ON MAJOR SKILL TREE CHANGES.
Face it...you just don't want to pony up the merits (which is kinda silly - after all, you should have TONS at RA5) and get a freebie.
That's all this really amounts to - any excuse for a freebie.

Good Luck - when they made game altering changes on Champs Online - we had to fight them for a respec.

Are you talking about recently or near launch? Once they actually got the full respec tokens in (a battle which one would think the STO devs would have learned from and had a system prepared for ) they were handed out like candy for as long as I kept paying attention (mid-November).
you can retain you bo i had no idea so many points wasted
Yup. You can just retrain their skills by spending starfleet merits to add a different one (or training yourself, or training from another BO). And then use skill points for BOs to train the new skill up. Since you get double BO points at RA5, it's pretty easy to do.
Which means in the context of this topic ... changes to skills people use on their BO's aren't really going to be strong enough to sway the devs to give a free respec. You want to not use Viral Matrix anymore? Don't. Drop it off the BO and put something else there.
To quell any rumors - I show no free respec on the schedule with this update.
Maybe it was deleted? I specifically remember a "Free Tacos" bullet, in the updates summary...
sort of like the "Free Cake" in the "45 day patch"... wait a minute...
(Meh, I'm not too concerned about it, really. I say this as a Science Captain (on my main). Then again, I've been kind of phasing out my VM since I found out about the changes, and I've never been one to use FBP that much.)
While I would have selected "forestall" myself, the context and construction of the sentence doesn't (plausibly) lead to the same interpretations as That Other Quote. The verb has a much more offensive connotation when applied to people.

So let me get this straight, you guys are planning to bring major changes to abilities that people have specced into and will be nothing like they used to be, and you don;t want to give out free respecs? (Well, not *you* but who ever's job it is to grant them) That's a real smack in the face.

I am against any ideal of a free re-spec They have it on the C Store. If you want to re-spec pay $12.99 for some CP points.. I kind of like the ideal of Cryptic Studio remaining profitable in a slow economy.

>sigh< Yet another uninformed player.....
Yeah... The BO points are easy to come by...
But, a fully maxed VM requires 3600 Skill points to be spent Sensor Probes.
Now.. with a major nerf to VM, I don't want those points in Sensor Probes. I want them elsewhere. Only way to accomplish that is... yup, you guessed it... a respec. Thus the demand for respec tokens with this patch.

So....
You think it's good business for them to FUBAR someones careful expenditure of skill points with a major change to several skills. Then demand an additional months subscription fee to return the character to reasonable state of play?

Ummm... You just earned a...
/facepalm
What?
You get a free respec with every level you go up in. I don't think I have ever played an MMO so rewarding.

Woah, I didn't even look if they were implemented. I thought that would never happen.:D I'm going to test them immediately.

Not the news i wanted to hear. But i am very pleased for a more or less solid answer. Thanks Dstahl!
But thanks for responding!
Let the freakouts and overreactions begin!!!

Well, at least it's a firm answer, albeit a bit disappointing.

no, it's their business model...
Yeah, as I said... disappointing.

Then you obviously have not played any of Cryptic's other games. Not granting a respec upon a major change like this is unheard of for them.
