Not being a big computer gamer, I bought Star Trek Online hoping that it would introduce me to the world of gaming. As I started the game I was confused as to why there was no control for setting the difficulty level as with other games.
I have noticed through my progression that not only do my ships get more powerful but so do the enemys ships. This seems rather pointless to me as the whole idea of upgrading should be so you can defeat the enemy more easily - but this is not the case.
And ground combat is not much better. With 4 away team members and myself it took all of us more than 10 minutes to kill just one person!
The look of the game is fantastic, but I am very disappointed in how difficult I have found it so far.
I'm just disappointed that this game was released in such a state. You can't even control your ship from the Bridge for crying out loud... Maybe I'll come back in a year or so and see if this game's out of the Beta phase.

STO is getting a difficulty slider soon, but It won't help you since you are finding the (what everyone else considers easy) normal settings hard. And they are only adding harder settings not easier ones.

Video games have lot of different genres, and the rules on progression, customization and pretty much everything changes based on the genre.
This is an MMO (Massivally Multiplayer Online game), all MMO's are the same. In all MMO's you progress to get more power SO you can fight more powerful enemies. The stronger the enemies you fight the better loot you get. (Thats the whole point). - If you did not pick up the game expecting this, you were ether miss informed about the game or made the mistake of not reacrhing this game before you brought it.

Ground combat I agree is not one of STO's good aspects, however if you are struggling this much ether you just are not fighting properly or not equipping your self/team members properly (or soloing STF's).
Thank you for your replies. I agree that I am an inexperienced player and that may have a bearing on my understanding of the game and my gameplay. It certainly seems that there must be very competant players out there if they think its too easy!
I have some other Star Trek games on CD which I find more satisfying, so perhaps i'll go back to them. Its just a shame that my introduction to online gaming is quite different from that of games on CD. It doesnt make the transition easy.

Cheers all.
some people prefer the single player experience for a verity of reasons. many like both he MMORPG and the single player experience. There there are people who prefer the MMORPG experience. I am more like on of those as single player games lack a kind of "life" I enjoy in my electronic entertainment. You might be a person who prefers the single player experience, and that is totally cool.
.Angelous.****. broke things down quite nicely. Do play games you like but also think about the differences. Perhaps we will see you back here some day. MMORPGs are very cool for what they are. If, in the end, you just don't like them I wish you the best possible gaming experience you can have in what ever games you prefer.

I think that particular objection is a little different than you interpreted it, and it's one I share. We progress through different and better ships to get stronger, but the enemy's ships just get stronger without getting different. There's no progression of fighting up the enemy's line of battle - you start out spanking Negh'var's in light cruisers and Assault Cruisers in starter birds of prey. There's a fundamental inconsistency there that drove me absolutely bonkers in Beta and still annoys the hell out of me.

I will not be renewing my subscription.
I hope somebody in charge see my responce.
Brett.
Video Games are really very limited in the difficulty they offer to even the average person. Its all math and if you are good at figuring out the min/ max you soon meet the end game. They can be entertaining if you simply role play the graphics and are imaginative. If you play to 'win' you are really playing to no longer play.
A few have pointed out, MMOs tend to be different but they are becoming very defineable. The hobby MMOs that give you a long term hobby and the eye candy ones that are more about selling a client making a quick buck and to hell with the subscription base. Let is burn out, the quicker the better. So far this seems to be that group. Its too bad but you served your purpose if thats the case. You bought the game.
- Add On: PS. The perma shield, ground mission people you took 10 minutes to kill? Go to DS 9, get a Bat'leth. While he tries to plant turet number 70, just camp him, spam 1 and 2. It ignores his shield.

lol
yes
the first game i played was "Oblivion" and i found the same thing to be true.
learned to "not level"
notice many on here state capping in 3 weeks or so
2 months for me and i am at 2nd tier (klink and fed)
pvp - mission - pvp
many state they do not pvp. which makes no sense to me on an mmo
the critics have called the game a glorified arcade game
what they fail to mention is that an arcade game can entertain you for hours if you have enough quarters
pong was champion for awhile- no loot - no leveleling
the original star trek series was innovative and broke tradition
the game would do well to do the same
