    Fraps used to have a limited ( as in limited to movie length and size ) free version I think http://www.fraps.com/

    fraps is just about all you need to record game video ( editing is a different matter ) but I have no idea what the trial version entails. I have the pro version. For editing I use Corel Video Studio Pro X3 or Sony Vegas Pro. Whatever the mood takes me but again, neither are free.
    There are free programs around but if you need studio functionality you have to pay for it.

    Even if yoiu do not wish to do any in-house editing. I would suggerst this if ytou have the means to use expoted frame sequences!

    While Fraps is nice, it costs money.

    A few good free options;

    WeGame - a fraps-like alternative to recording, functions just about the same.

    XFire - while its an IM application, it's video recording feature is completely free and it records in just a raw .avi format you can then edit and hack away at later.

    VLC - again its a video viewing application but it comes with some great capture options (desktop share, webcam, etc) so it can capture and convert what you want.

    your mileage may vary depending on which you go with but the above are all free options.

    Thanks for the info mavgeek. Someone should try one of his/her suggestions on the Star Trek Online game and see if it works.
