Alternate STO community and web site!!

Official Phantasy Star web site.

Unofficial Phantasy Star web site.

We need our own alternative community! We need to be very dedicated to the sir and have our own prime directive. We could organize community events and share information on STO. I propose the leaders of all the fleets organize this. If you do it I will donate if needed. But I believe we can do it on a free web site. If you are familiar with PSU you know how much PSO means to the players in PSU. We could have a similar site for STO. We just need to make it happen. I would do it myself. But I'm no expert on web sites or coding. I hope the Dev's give us their support.

So how about it?

Everquest went through its golden years utilizing that model. The best EQ sites were all unofficial class sites, guild sites and information sharing sites. The official EQ forums were ... rinky dink by comparison.

But, I think taking a look at some of the amazing work that some posters have done on game info (the tribble breeding for example) demonstrates that this community is not at all rinky dink. So the task you are proposing is a big challenge in that people could just come here for their info.

If you had the STO version of Thottbot ... then I think you'd have what you'd need to make it work.

I think most people are here because they see a glimpse of DEV attention in this board.

Why should i go somewhere else?

I would assume the incentive for an unofficial site would be less adherence to Cryptic's Forum Posting Guidelines which are often times criticized for being too heavy handed.

So what you lose in dev attention, you gain in looser moderation.

I agree PSU is a microcosm compared to other MMO's. But for the people playing PSU it means everything. PSO is equal to PSU official web site as far as information. It could be that way for STO. Maybe not just one site. At least one main site to link everything together. It can work if we make it happen.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I liked your PSO example. I was just pointing to EQ as another example to show that unofficial community sites can and do work. I have far more experience with EQ myself. So I fell back on that. EQ's best sites were all unofficial sites. And at that game's height of popularity, the unofficial sites would get development team attention. Cementing their legitimacy.

I think your idea has a proven track record that it can work. Definitely.

I just think that right now with all the work that's been done in this community already, it might be harder to get off the ground. Might have been easier to try this back in Beta.

My last post on the PSU boards was in 2008, lol. Thoughs were the good old days. Me, Starrz and Tekki hit the "uber elite - completed all content" stage together and then spent a bunch of time purposely lag glitching the game to do amusing things to ourselves and each other.

    Good memories ... I'm Purified :3.

looser moderation? is that even possible? you want pure anarchy then? :D

i'd rather like some harder moderation and threads without use to be deleted instead of just closed.

That's the exact reason we need it!! There are a lot of players and posters who post here who have more energy and certainly have a lot more to say about the game. If we could put that energy to good use and have information about STO that you just could not get here on these forums. Cryptic cannot pay everyone to list their information about the game. There is memory alpha for all of Star Trek information. We could use something similar for STO. If you look at PSO world its more than just a community hub. Its everything else about the game that's not on the official site. It helps in you gameplay in PSU. Helps you make choices about how to level. Where to level and everything about the game.

Well, there are already several STO wikis and fansites. The trouble is that...there are wikis and fansites. There's a lot.

Which is great, really. There's a lot of community interest. But none of the wikis and other resource fansites I've seen have been truly comprehensive.

For instance, I've seen one fansite operator plug his page as having the best listing of Bridge Officer abilities out there. But 'best' is purely relative - it's true that his site had info other sites didn't have. But it was also lacking important details that other sites did have.

Now, if everyone came together and contributed, maybe we could have all that info on one website. But we don't. We have dozens of websites, and massive duplication of effort.
