Whatever happened to:

I remember a ways back in an article or by a statement made by the producer or devs, that STO was to have planets that you would discover and either have to gain favor with the Federation or be subjugated by the Klingons.

STO was to have a planet takeover by either faction, and the resources including Bridge Officers would be gained by the victor.

Depending on the side you were on, the acquisition of planets and territory in the name of (your faction) would grant you prestige points in order to purchase more items.

Whatever happened to this idea? Just curious.

I remember a very old dev statement about exploration missions and getting to name the systems. I don't remember anyone ever saying anything about you gaining control of planets and all that jazz. Sounds like an Eve thing rather then a ST thing, IMO.

Would be really cool though to see planets being wooed by different empires even if it was just a story arc mission. Kind of like PvP but using diplomacy.

Yes it was a very old statement, but in it, the planet was already aligned one way, and you had to do tasks in order to align it towards your faction.

If it was originally aligned with your faction, then you would gain resources from it automatically once your faction discovered it. If it already belomged to the other faction, then you would have to do things to change them.

If it was aligned with your faction, you could choose a BO from their "race". Sometimes they would be normal BO's and some would be Uber.

i did read that too... but that was an *concept* from Perpertual ! (if i am not completely wrong)

*concept* as in "we would have done that if we had 15 years to make STO instead of just 5 where we did nothing but artwork"

Oh, you maybe right, it was a very long time ago. Maybe that is something that Cryptic can do in the Sector Space Zones, where the other 3 walls can lead you to unexplored territories where this sort of thing takes place?

I can't comment on what PE/P2 was going to do. I just knew I never remembered seeing anything described by the OP as ever being part of STO, at least not within the 2 years I've been following Cryptic's development.

I remember this little conference that was held in Las Vegas a few years ago,,, I think a lot of it they said off the top of their heads or in response to the audience to get them excited about the game.

Interesting. It would be nice to be able to go back to systems that were involved in "completed" missions...only with some usefulness to them. Otherwise you'd end up with Vulcan, Andora and Risa - empty.

There were discussions about that. One thing to keep in mind with any discussion of upcoming features is that they tend to be "things the developers think are cool but have no idea how to implement" until they get a place on the calendar. I know the idea was to let you save and share coordinates for a planet, just like you could create races, name them and trade them.

However, the discussion over the Diplomacy-related features (First Contact system in particular) does seem to indicate they're revisiting the idea of planets you can revisit and build reputation with.

yes, I remember this. There was discussion (chatter) about your friends/fleet being able to get coords for a new race from you and visit that planet/people.

I believe the general drift of the idea was to provide this in an instance, and only for those who recieved the correct coordinates (Ice pirates anyone? lol) Perhaps you would then have a list of such planets and you could keep collecting new locations as they were shared with you. Revisiting them as you want. Maybe one had x resource, another had y resource. (***DEVS pay attention here, as I typed this it sounded better and better -and plausible/possible**)

    Trading new locations
    Trading new race creations
    Training then trading BOs

3 great ideas which would have added dimensions to the game, that unfortunately got lost in the shuffle (except maybe they are looking at BOs).

The closest I could think of was the two-parter Explore the System Proposal.

The idea centered around building entire star systems and then completing missions on different planets, asteroids, etc.

One of the many sub-proposals was a server-wide faction vs. faction Diplomatic Effort. Completing all the missions in a given system would yield points toward your faction's Diplomatic Effort.

To balance for player population numbers, averages of each player's exploration diplomacy totals would be made per faction. Bonuses could even occur for an entire faction based on performance - even a concept like leaderboards. After-all, the best diplomats were always on the fast-track in the shows. :)

You can view the Explore the System Proposal online at GoogleDocs:
    http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B_J48yVKOV-1N2ZmMDNjYTEtNThiYi00NWU4LThkNzMtNzQ5NjRkNWUzNGMx&hl=en

    It came from this thread:
    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2519303

The cool thing is that the developers not only showed enthusiasm for the idea but actually asked questions as to how the design would work for team play.

This lead to the community creating an addendum proposal called Revisit the System, again at GoogleDocs:

    http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0B_J48yVKOV-1NjY5YzkyNDctOWFhNC00NjE5LWIzZWEtNDdkNDE1OTgzMTY0&hl=en

There were hundreds of replies, poll responses, and other feedback that went into these two proposals.

Was going to say that I remember it that way too.
