This has been happening since last night. For a brief time my high speed internet connection was unable to stay connected. It started when I was trying to change my character's uniform in game. I then received a message that said server disconnect or could not find account server.
I logged off to find my internet connection was disconnected. After an half an hour of troubleshooting, I was able to get my internet connection working, but now it ssems that my computer can't find my video card. Or that is what I am thinking that is what is going on. I can use my internet connection now but can't get past the launcher window. Any help is appreciated.
Hmm, have you tried launching any other (graphically intense) games? If you haven't tried that, you probably should to see if it's a general issue.
Also try checking your game install is intact by clicking Options in the launcher and ticking the box 'force verify'.
Did you manage to figure out in the end what might have caused the internet connection loss?
edit: you also probably want to run a dxdiagnostic test to see if there are any errors.
To run dxdiag:
- windows XP: click Start -> Run -> type dxdiag in the box and hit enter
- Vista / Win 7: click Start -> type dxdiag in the search box, press enter and launch dxdiag.exe
Well you could try, but just because there's newer drivers available doesn't mean the old ones should work any worse than they used to. It's worth an upgrade though, the newer drivers might work better, you never know.
It could ofcourse be just a weird coincidence that you happen to have a problem with launching the game just after the disconnection issue and that they're not actually related, but if they are related then I'm still struggling to see how one could affect the other short of there being something wrong with your motherboard.
Firstly though, I'd try to see if other games will work. Secondly I would try upgrading the graphics drivers and also just to be on the safe side I would reinstall the latest version DX9.0c (you can find a redistributable DX9 version on the microsoft site).
Yes but from DX9 onwards they aren't automatically backwards compatible like the older directx versions, so even if you have DX10 or DX11 you still need an up to date version of DX9 installed to play games that require DX9.
It's a common misconception, because a lot of people don't notice that most game installers actually come with a redistributable version of DX9 that they use to ninja-update your DX9 if it's found to be out of date. Hence in most cases you never need to worry about it and it's all done automatic. But sometimes you have to reinstall or update DX9 manually if the game lacks such a redistributable, if the installer screws up, or if you suspect there might be something wrong with your DX9 drivers (as could be the case in your situation).
you dont need to remove dx11, 9 10 and 11 should all be on your pc and only the version the game requires will be accessed
im going to take a little step backwards here but being as your issue started while you were ingame its possible the drivers have crashed and your pc is not able to find the d3d device reboot your PC if youve not already done so.. if youve reinstalled drivers id be surprised if you havent rebooted
let us know how that works... btw, did you ever get past that launch screen before? Right now, Im leaning towards a reinstall of STO for you... mainly because creating such a device is generally a command given by the game so it has a software object to work with.
Also, PLEASE try another DX9 game if this doesn't work... basically any game that says it need Windows XP and does NOT say DX10 support on the box should do the job.

Make sure the tabs say "no problems found".

if youve not already done so remove and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card rebooting between uninstall and install
then reinstall dx9
