Anyone else seen the announcement in the June issue of PC Gamer?
Here is what is said.
Alien Ships Approaching
Star Trek Help is on the way

Cryptic announced that at least one new playable faction would be arriving for Star Trek Online before
the end of the year. Borg and Romulan are the top contenders right now, but Cardassians and Jem'Hadar are being considered as well. players will be given some say in the final decision. In the mean time, a death penalty and difficulty sliders are on their way, in response to complaints that the game is to easy.
If this is posted elsewhere i apologize. Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware and wanted to hear some thoughts on this.
It's been common knowledge since beta that a new playable faction was in the works. It kinda upset people given that they have not finished the other one already in game.
Im a subscriber.
So i get it a day or so before it comes out on new stands.
But have had it sitting on my desk for two days or would have posted sooner LOL.

Breen are in the lead with th development team (or so they say).
I'd like to see the Terran Empire as a playable faction someday.
The current federation side plays out like Terran Empire. Just squint a bit and equip the new Mirror Universe unis when they debut and you will be GTG.

They have said that the goal with side factions is now:
PvP focused.
Exploration content.
Around one big episode per rank.
Access to STFs and Fleet Actions.
Klingons are nearly done. They may add more but they have stated they do not have the time, resources, money, manpower or interest to catch other factions up with the Federation and that the Federation will always be ahead on content.
The goal is now "full factions" (as opposed to what some would call Monster Play, having access to at least a glimpse of every aspect of the game) but not "equal factions".

The game is dead for me without new factions and fully-fleshed out story-driven content. I don't play PvP. I never have and have no interest in it. If new factions are PvP oriented then for me it's a waste of a character slot. If the Federation will be the only one with single player content with story arcs to fully level a character then that also means the game is dead. There is only so many times I could repeat exactly the same content over again with the only difference being a different character and ship design. In fact I doubt I could play it twice. Both my alts are stalled at LtC4/5.
Breen are in the lead with th development team (or so they say).
I strongly doubt Breen would be first. Romulans are part of the Holy Trinity of Star Trek empires... and the Cardassians were the villains for an entire series. I'm surprised Breen are even on the table.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Breen all wearing identical full-body suits? I really hope we get something with a little more customization options...

I also hope that Romulans are the next faction to be released. Even though I'll most likely continuing playing my Federation character, the Romulans have almost as much influence in the Star Trek mythos as the Klingons, so they should be next in line.
Breen? Puh-leeze! April 1st was 3 weeks ago. (*rolls eyes*)
I'm hoping for Cardassian's myself. I'm greatly interested in the background story of their race. We know it's intertwined with Bajor's history. I'm wondering how they became the xenophobic totalitarians they were in the TNG snd DS9 era.

Well, I hope they come up with solutions to the content grind. I think a part of that is getting exploration missions up to a point where they have deeper storylines and people like them more than storyline content.
The one big hope I can see for more leveling content is a new neutral, cross faction path.
At the same time, the amount of content the Feds have took them 12 months to develop and that was something they never anticipated having to do with each faction. Everything else would have to go on hold for every faction to have a unique, full storyline 1-45. Feds don't even have that if you are 110% opposed to all forms of repeatable content. (The game seems designed to assume that you will try at every repeatable mission at least once.)
I disagree though. I think the game is dead if they have to toss it back into development for a bunch of side factions and that they need their manpower developing new systems, creating solo-endgame, player generated content, systems, features and polish. I think we'd be better off if they'd just planned this as a one faction game but we are where we are.

I would expect the Cardies to be the next faction released after Romulans. It makes A LOT more sense than having Breen & Pakleds (Breenleds?).
Wouldn't mind seeing the borg myself, but only if we get to have cubes lol.
Romulans or Cardassians would be pretty awsome as well.
With any luck if we get the borg, they will have some good borg weapons and borg abilities to choose from that are not common to other factions.
On another note, hopefully they will not continue down the path of PvP centric factions.
I like PvP ok and I have nothing against it, I just prefer the more story driven content is all.
Making a faction PvP centric pretty much shuts me down on wanting to play that faction, as it is just not something I enjoy on a regular basis.
And yes, if they cannot make more factions as fleshed out as the feds, I would be very disappointed to say the least.
I do not want to stick to only playing the feds for the entire lifespan of the game lol.
There would be a certain logic in releasing the #3 or #4 most popular option this year and saving the Cardassians or the Romulans for a paid expansion, especially since expectations will no doubt be higher for a more popular faction and lower for a less popular one.

This. Get the Genesis system up to its full potential, including linked missions in the future, where you did an Aid the Planet mission, and they remember you when you come back and assist them in another way. If new factions could be released with PvP in mind, but full exploration and initially a single episode arc (1-2 missions per rank) I think we would have a winner. They could always go back and add additional episodic content, especially with the method they have discussed recently.

Er... Breen? Really? I can't say one way or another if that's a good choice, since i know nothing about them. What would the appeal of the Breen be over the Romulans?
(And Borg? Really? That's even more of a surprise. Not going to knock it, it's just a surprise.)

They were able to destroy most of Starfleet Academy during the Dominion War - the species appeared or was referenced in numerous episodes of TNG, DS9, and VOY.

I don't even remember where they appeared. DS9? Voyager?
Wikipedia, Wikipedia... hmm... first appearance, 4th season of DS9. Guess that explains it. There are quite a few DS9 and Voyager (and Enterprise) episodes I haven't seen. That pic on Wikipedia looks a lot like Princess Leia as a bounty hunter in Return of the Jedi.
Anyway. Bring on them Romulans!
And Horta. Every day we go without playable Horta is another day we go without playable Horta.

The Federation, however, had limited knowledge of the Breen and was aware of Breen outposts located near a black cluster in 2368. (TNG: "Hero Worship") In 2370, the Breen participated in a palio held at Deep Space 3, during which the Ferengi attempted to bribe the Breen pilot into throwing the race. (TNG: "Interface")
[...]
Breen privateers also raided the Bajoran colony of Free Haven in 2372; they were, however, successfully driven away by the USS Defiant. (TNG: "Hero Worship"; DS9: "To the Death")

They may as well give away that Del Taco shuttle that 98% of the world had no access to.
Magazines are always a month ahead with their issue dates and a month behind with their facts.

There are also from the Alpha Quadrant.

They first appeared in TNG: Cardassians are aligned one of many fairly independent factions in the Dominion.
