With the DP discussion going on, I've noticed a few times people saying how easy it is to make cash to buy stuff with.
Thing is, though, my experience is the exact opposite. Each time I make a new rank (I'm a casual player so a slow leveller), I generally have just enough credits to buy a refit of common weapons at the lowest mark for my ship and equipment for my away team. And that includes cash got after selling the equipment my new ship came with.
This is the reason why I'm building Torrens; I'll race him to Admiral, do dalies, exploration etc. and use the cash he makes to equip my other characters. But are the infinate dalies at Admiral the real source of this legendary "unlimited" energy credit source?
Am I doing somthing wrong? Should I be making more credits than I currently am?
I started by selling my drops. I dont use the common vendors in the bar...they pay you bare minimum. You can usually find a vendor who will also buy back your stuff -- like a couple in the Klingon shipyard. I also sell thing son the exchange.. but before I do, I look to see what things are selling for....at times you will note shortages in items..like plasma turrets...so if you have some or can even mail them from another character..you can bank,
PVP daily or not you get between 10,000 to 20,000 credits a match. On top of that, when you hit RA5 and start going all purple, those badges you used to get your greens a few weeks back are now useless to you, so you can buy stuff and sell it on the exchange to those who don't have the time or don't want to get all the badges they need/want.
As a service to my fellow gamers, I sell my drops for the list price at the exchange regardless of market. I noticed a lot of my fellow fleet members getting hosed by huge price gouging and made it a point to undercut as much as possible.
Selling below market price doesn't help anyone, goldfamers watch the exchange like hawks and buy anything underprice and price it right back up. You're really only making things worse because not only did someone not get that item cheap you also made no EC off of it.
When you get a Loot Drop after fighting any money made on it is 100% PROFIT..........
As for me
i sell items as follows:
Common: add 2-3k
UnCommon: X2 the value
Rare: X3 the Vaule
Very rare: I keep most is bound on pick up ( well the stuff i get)
But this is just me and it works for me. And do not care if some one buys it and places back up at a Higher Price then what I have it at that is what they do...
in the long run selling loot drops at any price let it be on the exchange or Vender is profit.....
OP: buying leveling gear is where you went wrong. That's the number one way people don't get rich in MMO's. You can find good enough (and great) gear as you level anyways. This is a fairly casual game, you don't need the best gear possible for leveling.
Let's say you spend 100k on gear at Lt. commander. As soon as you hit commander, that 100k is worthless if you spend another 100k on Commander gear, minus the vendor sell value. If you had saved that 100k both times, you'd be sitting at 200k at commander, 300 at capt., 400 at Admiral....all on gear you won't use anymore. You basically paid another player for gear you would have gotten anyways, when you could have saved it until admiral.
In the time you were a Lt. Commander, you probably found as good as or better gear than what you bought. Though if there is a really good buy on the exchange, go for it. I've bought 2 things on the exchange up to commander 7, all my cash has stayed on me.
Now my highest ranked character (who's Cmdr 2) didn't start raking in the energy credits until Lt. Cmdr. 6 from mission item drops. And to make money on the Exchange, you do need to do some research to find out where the demands are... If you see on the exchange that many prices for a item are posted at list, you know that there isn't much demand for it, and classify the item for vendor fodder, and reserve your Exchange posting slots for something that will sell. If all you see are outrageous prices for an item, you may be able to palm off items to the pricing speculators for a quick payoff... (Someone recently bought all the common Quantum Torpedo Launcher Mk II that was posted for 15,000, and re-posted them for 50,000. Honestly, how many Lt. level characters are going to spend 50,000 for a common Quantum Torpedo, even if they are a little better then Photon Torpedos). Phaser and Disruptor Turrets Mk II are also good sellers for a lower level character...
Also, check the Tribble breeding charts, and see what 'food' items are needed for the highest level Tribbles... food Items such as 'Tranya', and 'Klingon Octopus', can make a good killing on the Exchange...
Also keep in mind that most of the prices you see on the Exchange, are the prices that AREN'T SELLING... as prices that do sell, sell very quickly... If you price 30% lower or more then the current exchange prices, you can make a quick sell to another player, or be bought out by a pricing speculator, who can take the long term posting risks for you...
I had over 800 pvp marks for t4 and I just bought the EPSs and sold them.. for alot cheaper then what was on the market. had enough to equip my Qin Raptor for a few lvls.
I was thinking about this again last night whilst I was playing, and I pulled up a chart of the memory alpha crafting...
 Nearly all of the stuff I want for my ships is avaliable there!
I guess it kinda makes sense - I was wondering why I was finding blue Plasma dual cannons for less than white plasma dual cannons on the exchange. And with data samples cheap, makes it a real possibility. Now I just have to find the base items...
I guess Torrens is making a house call to Commander Romanie tonight.

Sadly you also drove the price doen for anyone else wanting to sell them...dropping price just low enough to sell is fine...but killing a market for your own needs ..well..lets just call you Goldman

I do the same thing.
Then again, I play a Ferengi.
We can out cheap you any day of the week.

If this is true how am I able to get most of my even mark green weapons for a new tier for a few thousand each?
Basically, sell everything. If you have something you're not going to use there's not a lot of point in saving it unless you want to pass it to a leveling friend or alt. All those small hypos that you don't need because you have a good science bridge officer on your away team with plenty of heals (right?) are only worth 20 credits each to the replicator but it adds up. If something has a listed price higher than 1,000 post it on the exchange. Check the price first to see if there are people selling for less than the 50% you can get from the store and pick a price point somewhere between that 50% mark and the lowest listed price on the market.
