I'm talking along the lines of Burning Crusade, lets face it STF's aren't that great and you can only patch so much in a game. I'm dying for some new content.
Yeah and what great content are they planning for an expansion pack? Maybe adding a whole new section of the galaxy to include Tholians or the New Federation? And many more diplomatic and/or exploration missions.
Those kinds of expansions are usually an every 6 month or an annual thing. So I'd say given the current schedule and timeline, at the very least it'll take a bit more than 6 months.
Maybe by the game's 1-year anniversary? If I were placing a bet, that'd be the one I'd go with.

Well Burning Crusade came out what? Like 2 years after WoW's launch? That should answer your question.
I think its a little too early for STO to be having a major paid expansion. Maybe after a year or so of beefing up the main game, they can start talking about it. My bet would be somewhere around the 16 month mark when the Lifetime subscriptions start hitting the 'free' point.
Its about time Cryptic did what it claims to do and add some decent content and make this game a real MMo, instead of adding cash-grab items for the store. Forget expansions it would only be filled with fluff and lack content, fix whats broken (the whole bloody game) before looking for add-ons which they will rip you off with.
There is SO MUCH Cryptic could do with expansions, I am curious as well.
I am hoping for opening up the wormhole and it being dominon content.
I would like to point out, I can guarentee that they haven't even wrote anything down yet as to what they are going to do for expansion.
I would also like to point out that CBS will have to approve everything.
But, I am going to put a date down as end of June beginning of July next year. Cryptic, CBS, Atari, the people atari owes money to, and just about everyone in the world wouldn't want to miss that oportunity.
I'd love to see space expanded, exploring the Gamma Quadrant would be awesome for starters, perhaps also having more of the Alpha/Beta Quadrants opened up as well. Some real diplomacy and exploration would be fantastic, also not making the STF's as ball breaking would be much appreciated too IMO.
well since this is cryptic....we should be getting content beyond the burning crusade in about 6 months or so maybe a year tops.....and we wont have to pay for it.
Areas being added...new classes and such....is usualy a major patch thing.....(they like to call them Seasons for this game)
They plan to come out with the big stuff every 3 months.....with small additions every other week.
It seams the people on this thread must be thinking this company is like blizzard or something.....
sorry to pop the bubble....
Cryptic actualy cares about its players....gives ten times more content and service then blizzard ever thought about...its why Blizzard took many of the ideas they used in worlds of warcraft from cryptics games.
Only weird thing with cryptic...is that they tend to never update the in game manuals and in game hints...thats a huge pet peeve of mine.....still burns me up...when they added this new area in one of their games and had NPCs that tell you to go there....but they dont actualy have way points or tell you where the new area is....and I realized right off If I had been a new player i would have been so totally lost....
The announcement will be three to six months after the release of STO. The actual release date will be six to ten months after that. My best prediction is by the end of May we will hear rumors which will be confirmed by mid June. Then the release will come by late November to early December.
I'm just guessing. This is based on nothing at all but my gut instinct.
I dunno.. I look at it this way: do I want mini-expansions (Seasons) every few months, or do I wanna wait 8months to a year for an expansion pack I have to pay for?
I don't like paying for expansions unless they are full-blown ones too, as in, come on their own DVD, not just a patch that downloads and you gotta pay to access, cause then it's basically RMT, and you know it won't have as much content as a real DVD expansion would anyway.
oh god.. I hope not. Undine or Borg as a playable race would be so silly. Not SO MUCH the Undine, but certainly the Borg.
I want those races to stay mysterious and completely hands-off for players, once you can have people running around as Undine it just breaks any immersion at all, they're no longer this mysterious super-highly-evolved-race-from-fluidic-space they're just another fleshsuit for a player to run around in and do explore missions like everyone else... silly.
I do think we'll see monthly and quarterly updates for free.
I also think we'll see paid expansions. Keep in mind, one of the big points behind a boxed expansion is to keep new players coming in and keep the game on store shelves.
So I could see a first stab at an expansion maybe being something like a new first 10-15 levels of content, an extra faction and acting as standalone access to the game while new endgame continues to be free. The real point of expansions is to keep new blood flowing into the game.
I think you'd lose more people charging for new endgame content than a new leveling path at this point.
It would take more than a year to do a new 1-45 path at this point.
But I could definitely see a new leveling path, mostly faction neutral, being an expansion priority.
They might even do like what they did with City of Heroes' GvE pack and let existing players buy it for a reduced rate on the C-Store.
The idea being, say:
The core game will be $20-30 retail at that point.
The expansion, which includes the core game will be $30-40, maybe.
And they could do something like offer the expansion (which is not required for endgame) as an add-on for existing players for $10-15 or something.
I'm expecting Season 4, which should come out around the one year anniversary, to be a paid expansion pack. It seems likely it will have a Romulan faction and a level cap raise to 60, among other things.
Typical MMOs wait at least a year after release before releasing paid expansions. Judging from their track record (CoH / CoV), I'd give it 12 - 18 months.
NO!!! Never the Borg!! Ever! Unless it is basically watching a movie through the eyes of your Borg, and you can;t design a captain, there is only one button. The obey the queen button. And if you don't press it they automatically press it. And you have no choice, no missions, no skill points, or ranks. I would be ok with that. But that would be very much fun, now would it? :P
Ehem.. If you look at the polls recently held, The Romulans would be be 1 on the list, followed by The Borg on 2nd. The Cardassians was 3rd if I remember correctly...
Once again, why would there be Cardassians in the Dominion? Even assuming that the Breen were allowed to remain in the terms of the Dominion's surrender is a bit of a push. Plus, they have more than enough species to use as it is - Dosi, Karrema, etc.

Just a FYI.
Just a little FYI, I posted that 9 days before that poll was started.

Blizzard's statedgoal is 12-16 months per expansion but they generally get delayed to the 2 year mark.

one can only hope.
Dominion (includes Breen, Cardassians, Jem'Hadar, Vorta, Changelings, etc.)
Romulan Star Empire
Independent Faction (includes Ferengi Alliance, trading/research groups, scoudrels)

Undine: Undine

So in 2 yrs time, everyone can be a Borg Captain (not just the founding STO Lifers).
