I must be a glutton for punishment. I pug regularly. There, I said it.
Sometimes it works. It's like a random roll of the die and you get 4 or 5 players who at least know how to support the team. But when it's a bad roll....oh god is it bad. I would've lost a lot of money in vegas last night.
A couple times I got lucky and got Devoras...seems like whatever team he's on wins, lol. Shows how effective a good science guy can be.
Other than those two times though, it was bad. Always had some guy in an escort full impulse to the enemy spawn point. Is it just me, or is it always a guy in an escort?
Last game was the worst, I guess that's why it's the last game. Right off the bat it was bad. Two players wouldn't join the team. And they immediately full impulsed to the other side, just to respawn behind us about 15 seconds later. That was a bad omen, they had to have died really quick.
Me and my two teammates get close enough to see the enemy team. It's DoB. About that time, the escort and other guy fly past us at full impulse again, right into DoB...and die again.
I honestly feel sorry for DoB. People that good need a challenge, and they sure weren't going to get that from us.
Just to be safe, I explain to the team how to counter TSS. Then had to talk in zone chat to try and get the other two to regroup with us.
So, we engage them, my teammate gets FF, so I heal and throw extend shields on them. Their shields drop, so I use my EPtS on them (not sure if this worked to repair his shields). Didn't matter though since I had a big target on my back with extend shields going. So they FF me and I'm dead. No heals, no extend shields, not even a science team was sent my way. End result, I did more healiing than my entire team combined...multiplied by four.
What's really sad is, I'll probably pug again. I'm a glutton for punishment.
join the organized pvp channel! Chances are you can actually get a group together from the people sitting around. (its how I got devoras to start premading with me )

It is so hard to find competent help these days. Fortunately I am often decent enough on my own to carry my team of incompetent minions to victory if they aren't completely braindead, or at least survive long enough myself to have some fun despite of our team loosing the match hideously. Unless I meet Devoras's Subnuc + VM barrage team, ofcourse.;)
ps. People refusing team invites in PvP matches go on my ignore list. Seriously.
Pugs are fun and annoying at the same time. But thats what makes them my preferred choice. Premade groups for pvping or pveing are great. Playing with the same people all of the time has its advantages. You know each others weakness or strengths.
But if all you do is play in groups where everyone does what you want them to do, then you will usually fail in a random group.
I've been apart of many pugs here in STO. There have been numerous times (in pugs) where the team started out terrible. But as soon as players notice how each other are playing/using skills and adjust... any pug can be good. Just because I am an engineer that loves to use my fabrications doesn't mean I can use them how I think they should be used all of the time. Sometimes I just have to adjust to my enviroment. Sometimes I have to just stop using my fabs for the entire match.
In space it can be much tougher. Many Klingon pugs would not be that great without their cloak ability, which gives them a chance to group up, follow the leader, etc. Feds have to adjust on the fly alot faster. And the fact of the matter is, Feds don't adjust fast well in space pugs. I am an engineer and surprisingly rank high in healing in many space matches compared to other ppl on my side. Most spacers just want to dmg dmg dmg dmg. They don't care about healing others. I was like that when i first started pvping in space in STO. Until I got tired of nobody else healing.
Thanks for the responses and the support. It was one of those situations where it was so bad, it was kinda funny. Which is why I shared it.
So now I'll join the organized pvp chat and hook up with some good players. But you know, the truth is, in a moment of weakness, I'll pug again. I think I need an intervention.
I've been lucky to find some good PUGs on occasion, but it's a crapshoot like the OP says.
What is with people turning off teaming? Hello, you're in a PUG! This is always a bad sign. As is people asking what FBP is. /facepalm
Getting confused with the acrynoms I can understand because it happens to me all the time - despite reading a lot on the forum and following the Test/Tribble Chat and all that.
Unwilling to team. No, I can absolutely not understand that. I guess we need a "Free for All" PvP map for those people. Everyone against everyone.
It happens to me to offen =(,everybody goes to different sides on salvage, they all die...
I have extend shields and hazzard emitters,so the first thing i try to do when i arrive and weapon power is not at max yet is to heal someone and noooo that someone is always going full speed away from me so I can't catch him and the one chasing him eventually destroys him. Most players in escorts just don't know that they should stick arround cruisers and science.
When I do get to someone in a rush I sometime's press RSP instead of extend shields, those icons are not that much different, and EPtS is excatly the same as RSP
I can tell you for a fact, the ratio at least for me, is 1/10 bad KDF's, and 9/10 Feds, when I PuG.
I played the exact same ship class, though I was Sci- BC on KDF, and Eng - StarC. BO's were mostly the same, only change was due to which BO's were able to be assigned. (BC has 1 more Eng1 slot, 1 less sci/tac)
The loadouts where different, I was beams and torps on SC, and cannons/torps as BC.
What I found, was that I would drop ES, ST/ET, HE, etc etc etc on the Feds, and what did I get in return?
Dead. No one else would help me, no one focused on targets, escorts wouldn't gun down the FBP BoP w/ high Aux. I might as well have parked the ship, and said, " Ok, this PuG fails, come kill us 15x so we can get this over with. "
When I was on my KDF, I got ES, TT/ST/ET, HE, etc etc from my KDF PuG's. At one point we had 2-3 ppl taking down the whole team, I even chased a cowardly escort around. (aka. don't pick a fight you're not gonna win ) Yes, I was packing 2-3 RSP, but that's only 45sec of RSP, leaving me w/ 1:15sec w/o any. I wanted ES3, and you'd be shocked at how often they'd try to burn down my ES3 target, even w/ ES3, ST, HE, and DF active. (dampening field)
I can't say I've ever had much success w/ Fed pvp, at least w/ PuG's. It's either a "TRIBBLE you " attitude and all about personal dps/#s, or deer in headlights + idiots. Yes, KDF has some of them, but mostly they're skilled enough to wipe out a 15 kill, before Feds. I don't even wanna talk about CnH matches. Those come down to , who is workin towards the objective, and who is think'n it's cracked planet.
If you still wanna PuG, at least get your skills, gear, etc worked out. Then at the very least, you can know you were giving 110%. I've noticed that if you're good, sometimes you get lucky, and the good players will want to keep grouped with you. However, vs a premade, you're at best 50/50 of losing. Later on, it's also about ship/capt makeup as well. But all that's for another forum section.(and already is there)
I'm assuming that EPtS can only be targeted on myself. I wondered that, perhaps I should've read the description, lol. And since I've never bothered using this useless ability...until it became a very useful ability to counter TSS, I honestly didn't know if it would work on an ally. Which, I noticed, you kindly edited out the part where I said that I wasn't sure if it worked or not, but it did make your ball busting more effective, lol. And now I know that I can't use it on an ally.
Lets say the instance will take max 14, (I think I remember one being a 14 max).
I queue up with a team of 5
There's already 11 in the queue, will it pull in 3 of our team of 5 to max out the instance, leaving 2 from the team to wait till the next instance,
or will it not pull any of the team of 5 in, until it can pull all 5 in to the same instance??
Sorry you get bad pug groups man. Least you keep your cool and try to use teamwork.
Agreed. This is PUG-gameplay. Interesting, unpredictable an always a different kind of experience. I like it, regardless of the fact that it is sometimes frustrating.

in this case, it will give the next 4 people after you to sign up priority. It will not seperate a team (unless they refuse to take the qeue invite). as long as you hit "qeue team" you will be prioritized as a group.

Sorry I wasn't clear; I didn't mean not knowing what the acronym FBP stands for, I mean not knowing what the "exploit" is that shoots blue pulses and takes down their hull is.
As for rushing off at full impulse, I've seen this in PvE as well. I have teamed on occasion for something like the B'tran explore missions, and the minute we finish one group they hit the gas to the next encounter even though their shields and hull are low. I believe the reason you see so many bad Fed players is that these bad habits are learned in PvE. That and they don't mind dying. <head shake>

It's good that you make the best out of what you can get. I would do the same thing in your shoes if I had that stamina.
odd how peoples experience of pugs is different, as a kdf i had a lot more wins than losses, by a huge margin, tho that would be no shocker in a pug vs pug.
as a fed in a pug i have to say in CP i have only had a few bad pugs where half the team went off to cap god knows what, i have had some close wins/losses and some total obliteration wins, and only a couple of obliterated losses, to be fair i have seen a lot more teamwork than i expected to (tho so far am only t2, but these players and myself will lvl up) and have found it to be more fun that lvl'in the kdf. The feds have listened, focus fired and healed each other, and remained within effective support range. It could be that i am seeing a few kdf players, but if so no one i know by name. and i love the sci ship, nothing annoys a bop more than bte when he hits evasive as most run 100/50/25/25
Biggest worry is the surprise i see in chat from some feds who actually thought beating the kdf was impossible, get a grip people the kdf are not all that

Nah, you just enjoy the challenge. A pug that works makes up for a lot of bad ones.
That sounds a lot like "An-incredible-streak-of-bad-luck" (TM). Be afraid for it can last as long as a couple of years, I kid you not.

Not possible.
maybe he used eps power transfer, which can be used on allies.
Of course, but to capitalize EPS and not "t" suggests otherwise.
Just bustin' balls
