Where is the Excelsior class?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I'm not sure if this was pointed out or discussed before. It's 5am where I'm at and this just popped in my head.

WHERE are the Excelsior class ships?

I would request that Cryptic please add Excelsior as an alternate choice instead of Stargazer.

The two ships are in service in the TNG era and both ships are comparable in strength, I just like the Excelsior class better than the Stargazer.

Based on size and modular components, I'm guessing it will be a purchasable variant for the Galaxy class.

The devs are working on the licensing, should be in Season 2.

It was first mentioned by dstahl here:

    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2448339

He said he saw some classic ships on the whiteboard in the studio, and when I asked him which, he highlighted the Oberth and the Excelsior in my quote. Since then, the devs have said they are working on licensing more Canon ships from CBS, and they will likely be in Season 2.

Have... you visited the forum before? Every second day there's a thread asking for the Excelsior, Ambassador, Nebula or Oberth... :p

Nah, the Excelsior isn't quite that big. It is closer to the size of the Tier 3 cruisers (sizes from 400 to over 500 meters have been given at different times) but due to the technological level of the ship, it will more than likely be a Tier 2 cruiser like the Constitution.

Perhaps even an alternate tier 2 cruiser...

If Cryptic really think about this, they could shake up the entire system again in season 2 by giving 2 variants to each class of ship above tier 2 for both Klings and Feds.... (Although Klings would require thinking outside the box... and maybe hiring a few new art designers...)

I like the idea. I would love to see this game have that extra degree of customization. I doubt it'll happen though, the art team is too small and stretched to thin due to the new missions and sectors coming in Season 2. The ship designers can't bring the environment artists over to help, because they are probably working on planet art for the new missions and new planet surfaces designs for the Genesis engine, and they can't bring the ship interior artists over to help, because they are busy making the Ship Interior system for Season 2. Without hiring new art staff. Without hiring more art staff, which I doubt they will do, there only other option would be to bring over some of the art teams from Champions and the third MMO.

Search is your friend. You may have JUST had this wonderful epiphony; however, the rest of the community has know about this since beta - and what the dev's are doing.

Next time, do a quick search to make sure "your" topic is relevant and hasn't been answered/mentioned before.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The Excelsior is clearly more powerful that the Constitution, definitely has way more weaponry (as seen with the USS Lakota) so it should be one Tier above it and most certainly not to be in the same Tier. So since Cryptic decided to add a "25th Century" upgraded Connie, then its only reasonable that they add a "25th Century" upgrade of the Excelsior. Besides, Excelsiors are a great alternative to those four nacelled Heavies, and it really is a Heavy Cruiser in relation to the Connie.

As far as the Quad Nacelle customization issue amongst the Heavies, then I suggest that the Excelsior be obtained similar to how you obtain a Runabout or a TOS Connie. That is, its a ship of its own self and not to be mixed and matched with the Quad Nacelled Heavies. Same can be said about the Oberth as an alternative to a Nova. It can be obtained at that Tier but shouldn't be mixed and matched with the Nova or Quasar.

I doubt that will happen. They will more than likely put the Excelsior in with the Tier 2's simply because it's parts match with them. But who knows?

If adding the Excelsior for mix and matching of parts is the sole reason why you think it would be added for Tier 2, then where would the Oberth fit in? It simply wouldn't make sense that it be in the same league as the Connie in terms of weaponry, capability and bridge officers...that is such a canon breaker and extremely illogical. Clearly the devs must have seen Star Trek 6... ;)

The Excelsior wouldn't fit very well in the T2 category, parts-wise, anyway. Its just so much bigger than the connie and other ships in that tier. It really should be a T3 standalone.

Memory Alpha tells me Excelsior was replaced by Sovereign.

The excelsior is a battle cruiser class. At least in the TMP era. In next gen, it is mostly used for transporting Ambassador's and the like to and from destinations. (Admirals also seem to use the Excelsior ships)

According to memory alpha, the Excelsior was suppose to replace the Constitution class refit and not only be bigger but had a new type of engine, the trans-warp drive. After the failure of the trans-warp drive, the fitted her with a traditional warp drive system but upgraded it with systems that were predecessors of the engine in the Galaxy class.

I would think this ship would fit in next to the Stargazer Tier ships and be a standalone ship of its own. They actually might have to re-Tier the ships and move some around to make things more canon. Who knows, I don't really care much as long as they introduce the ship. It would give me a reason to start a new toon again. LOL

Or, maybe set it as a special "Ambassador" tier where you can choose the ship after you reach RA5 and use it for special missions.

I'd prefer having it as a choice over the Stargazer class, personally. I just hope to see it in the game ASAP.

I'd rather they add the Constellation to T3.

I'd think the Constellation would be a tier below the Excelsior.

Heck, the Stargazer was originally supposed to be a Connie.

Wait OP you mean to tell me that this doesn't cut it for you?

Excelsior should definitely be no less than a Tier 3 ship. And it should definitely be in the game, seeing how many times it was used in TNG. Yeah, yeah, they hadn't enough models. It was still there instead of something else. ;)

    Sad but likely true.

And yet they put another "USS Uglystick" skin up for sale on the C-Store every week.
