My mom isn't happy with a monthly plan, and so we came up with buying the game, getting a month free, and then buying 60 day time cards, but do you need a credit-card for any of that? Thanks.
I think that you ARE required to enter one when you first sign up and stuff. After the sign up and junk then I think you can add in (IE change) your subscription method.
1) If you buy game time cards from a store then you can enter them and you don't have to enter a credit card.
2) Yes you can remove your credit card information from the form after they charge your card. However, you should tell your mom that millions of people conduct billions of dollars worth of credit card purchases on the internet every year without a problem. The credit card processing services are secure and they don't broadcast your credit card information all over the internet.
Yes that sounds correct to me, you should only be charged for game time after free period is done, by then you won't actually be charged because of your game card would then apply. You should then be able to safely delete the credit card info once you enter your game card.
If you are using a gametime card from the start then you do not need to enter a credit card.
you must enter the form of payment you will be using for the subscription after you select the subscription plan.
That means
enter a credit card
or enter a gametime card code
or enter a paypal account information
.
If you use the credit card or paypal you are charged a 1 dollor verification fee that is refunded . You will not be charged for the subscription until the 30 days are used up first. If you cancel before the 30 days your account will expire at the end of the 30 days and you will not be charged for the subscription.
If you enter a gametime card code the 30 days are added to the time of the game card.
Personally i think when a product says 30 free days I dont feel the company should be asking for a credit card before you have even played the game to see if you want to pay for extra months. Games like warhammer online don't ask for a credit card to start an account so why make it so people that don't have a credit card or are not inclined to use it to pay for game time cant play the game? I know you can use time cards but I have to as of yet find one in any of the retail stores in my area. So where do you get them?

1) You can play Star Trek Online during the 30 day free trial without entering a credit card.
2) You can call your local retailers and ask if they have STO game cards, or check their websites to see if they have them. Also, you can purchase STO time cards from Amazon.com and they will mail them to your home address.
Seems to me that the real issue here is either that your mother dosen't trust a large scale company to not rip her card for the minor amount of money she has compared to them, or that your mother dosen't trust you to not go ahead and buy 100000 months of playtime. What ever it is that is true, you know better than me.
If it is the first: I have my info on the page, and im not affraid at all. First of the system they use for CC management is quite secure, and no less dangerous than someone stealing her card and pincode in a shop.
I've worked for 8 months with CC management in Drupal (the CMS this page runs on) and we never had issues of security or extreme withdrawls.
If it is the latter: You need to earn your mothers trust somehow.
In both cases, you have the option to delete the card info once the transaction has been completed, so I really don't see the issue.
You have to use some kind of CC to pay the subscription.

People charged dozens and a few cases hundreds of times, even people with cancelled accounts. They got me 57 times before my CC noticed. In defense of them they are offering to do whatever it takes to fix any financial problems it caused anyone like debit card users who ended up bouncing checks.
Not a common thing at all, I just found the timing of it and your claim funny.

1. Having to provide some proof of payment up front makes it more difficult for gold sellers. This way they at least have to come up with a CC number. They usually use stolen ones, but every little bit to slow them down helps.
2. Do you have pre-paid credit cards in your area? You can use those, too.

You can also send in a support ticket to billing & account support via the site and ask them to activate your account for you manually so you don't have to add a creditcard or paypal. Expect it to take a while before they get back to you though. Their support queues are fairly backed up.
kid, you must give your card but cancel it right away.
Why you must give your card number? Well, it is a trick for people like me that are not careful and then when your game time expires they bill you on their own. And you can do nothing, hey you gave us card number and we understand you are regular player so we will bill you for you..dont bother do it yourself.

That is why you must give credit card number.
I wouldn't do business with a company that I thought was this devious. Did you actually cancel your account when you uninstalled, or did you forget that until you saw the bill? If you did cancel before the next billing cycle, did you contact Cryptic or your credit card provider about the erroneous billing?
When I signed up for this game I used a 60 day game time card. The subscribtion page accepted it without the need for a credit card. I was also able to use up my free month of gameplay time. I hope this helps original poster.
