I think you can. I forgot where I read it but you can submit a request to change it. You give 3 or 4 options you want and if they are not taken they change it. I think I saw it on their account FAQ's.

Nope, I've requested 3 times to have it changed and they keep giving me the same automated message.
I personally want mine changed because I constantly get asked questions about my @name in-game, and get the "LOL ur @name". Plus the @name itself isnt even important at all since it's really not even linked to your important account information.
Question: How do I Change my Online Handle?
Answer: If your online Handle is the same as your Username we would be happy to change your displaed online handle! Please log in and send us a Billing Support ticket with the three names you would like, in order of preference, if your first choice is unavailable. Keep in mind that trademarked or copywritten names are not acceptable.
Yeah but I think the real question is will they change it if your name *isn't* the same as your handle?
Plus there should be a simpler method than submitting a ticket and waiting for weeks.

DEVs or anyone who can list official steps in doing so please respond.
Thanks!!!
Maybe some of us like/want uniformity
i'm sure it's for security reasons. think about it - someone simply has to see you in game and they've got half of the username/password equation.
Meh, kind of irrelevant in my opinion. I come from the belief of "if someone wants to get into your account that badly, nothing's going to stop them"
Edit: From the FAQ:
