What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

Launcher Updater

Hello all, sorry if this has been asked before (I searched and found nothing) but I have an install question.

I've installed the game and now when I attempt to launch it for the first time, I get a message saying Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate. "Trying to update the launcher, please be patient." I've been patient, but that was 16 hours ago. I've tried on two different computers with the same result. Do I need more patience?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I get the same thing and I just switched my wireless (cellphone used as wireless modem (Tether)) yesterday. I have Windows 7 and pretty sure I saw someone say something about a port number and how it could be blocked from sending and receiving via Firewall settings. I'll let you know when I find that port number.

K no idea if making and opening the ports worked or not since I don't have much time to test it out but hit this thread and read about the port 7255. Hope it works, won't know til I get home from work tomorrow morning. Good Luck.

    Here's the thread-

Ok so I heard back from tech support and I've done all they asked concerning the firewall, anti-virus and running the program as an administrator, I also ran nettest. Apparantly ports 7255-7499 are "timing out". I'm guessing that's my issue? If so, can anyone direct me to where I can find out how to open these ports? If not I'm really at a loss here. Installed this on 3 different computers with 2 different OS. I'm now using Windows 7 on a brand new computer.

Thanks for your time and patience.

    Grim pirate:

If your using an intensive software firewall it may be blocking the program, or those ports.

Try adding the program to your access list on the software firewall.

Also if you have a router you need to go into your router and possibly open those ports or auto forward them to just one of your computers.

To test your router you can (if you have the option put your computer in the demiliterized zone temporarily), that's the area usually one computer that sits outside the firewall, you can test with this option, not every router has it but a good number of them do for running games and such. I would only do this as a troubleshooting effort and with an intensive software firewall also running. It could be listed as the gaming zone or some other such tag but the key ingreddient is that its outside the safety net of your firewalled router.

Antivirus running on the computer should not interfere with the running of STO, where you get into trouble is the security suites that do things like firewalls etc. I could not get webkinz to operate behind nortons firewall to save my life, it blocks something and is extremely annoying, I did finally get around this by adding in the webkinz network addresses as trusted areas but it was annoying.

You could also try to go to a friends house and connect from there, if that works, its something with your router that needs to be opened. It might be a quick way to narrow the problem down.
    good luck

opening ports on a firewall depends entirely on what firewall your using. some software firewalls only require the "star trek online.exe" and gameclient.exe to be entered, others you can specify which ports these exe's can use

if your using a network provided by your college, uni, school or work you should speek to the the network admin, they may be blocking the ports required by STO

    Absolutely agree.

The other thing I will note is that using norton there is an entire section undder the anti trojan area that blocks port after port, you could check there if your using a similar program to make sure thats not something that your blocking out on your software firewall, the hardware firewalls display the information much more forthcoming the internet security suites tend to put it layers and menus deep in the program.

Thanks for the help, everyone. It was my router; I had to manually add the ports so I passed the nettest and made it past the updater screen.

Only now when I try to login, it says "Unable to Authenticate". Pretty frustrating as I can't call in to tech support since their schedules mirror my own.

one other thing that affects the launcher. The launcher uses MSHTML so if there a problem with that it can stop the launcher from working right. Unfortunately Microsoft does not give you any means to fix MSHTM execpt
    1. re installing the OS
    2. Work through IE. Like making sure IE is updated, is not set to work offline, and the IE cache is cleared,
