Crashes in space and on ground - and a lot of ticket replies by Technical Support

FULL NEW EDIT OF THEAD AHEAD

Hello, sorry for this little wall of text comming up, but I did my best to document my dialog via ticket edits as complete as possible. Sorry for my lack of english :)

My game crashes in space and on ground. Sometimes after hours, sometimes after minutes and a few times in a row.

I did edit the original thread so that you can read the full dialog between me and customer support as follows. I hope it speaks for itself...

Long story short: We are running in circles:

I tried several graphics drivers, soundcard drivers (did even go back to realtek onboard), turned on and off different graphic options, used safe mode very often... I run the game as admin, use compatibility mode under Win7... I did reinstall the game several times, used verify after every crash...

Here are some fresh ErrorIDs... maybe they help:

11330620
1679028
11326261

And here is the complete communication between me and support:

Dear Sirs or Madam,

I have experienced a lot of crashes during space or ground missions. I tried turning on and off several graphic options and the safe mode, but I was not able to nail down the cause of the crashes. When they appear, the

Cryptic Error -Application jumps in and I write down what I did that time and send the full dump... Then I restart the game and verify all the files. So far so good, but when I look in the different log-files I do not find this crashes or a hint what happened.

I would really like to help you helping me, but when I don't know where to look for the right logfiles, I cannot post sufficient information on this crashes. Please tell me what I can do or what infos you need to help me.

Here for example is the info I found in the Crash.Log so far (C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\logs\GameClient).

Thank you in advance

As an Response I was told to delete the "Live" folder, which I did... (sorry, don't have the quote any more). The client then installed all the files again (in a looong download session with 11 Gig of Data). But still the crashes happened, so I edited my ticket. My Reply then was:
Dear Sirs or Madam,

thanks for your support. I did as you told me and let the Game download its 11 Gigabyte of Data again.
But still I am experiencing the same issues and the game crashes in space and on ground often. There are times when I can play for hours and then a crash appears. I verify all files with the launcher, but still after a short time it crashes again.

I also recognized that when the game crashes it seem to have problems uploading the crash-report. It says: "Error: DV:Unable to find patchxfer.log". Here is what the window of the Cryptic Error Exe was called: "CrypitcError PID : 3192 ETID:0".

If I can provide you with more info, please tell me. I recognized that in the forum several people experience similar problems...

Here is what I was told then:
Please try verifying your game files as they may have become corrupted. Start the game client Enter your username and password Click on the Options button at the top of the launcher screen and check the Force Verify box and click the OK button The game client will now check the installed files and patch files it thinks are corrupt or out of date Sincerely, Cryptic Studios Technical Support

Hmm... I did say that I tried verify before, didn't I ? Well whatever. My edit as followes:
Dear Sirs or Madam,

as I said before I DID verify the files every time after the Client crashed. I did delete the live folder as you told me, let the game patch it again, did even do several re-installations. Didn't change a thing. Still crashing.

And before you ask: I HAVE the latest drivers installed, did turn the Computer off and on several times and I am sure my harddisk is not corrupted.

If you want me to post you a log file here or provide you with some other information that might help you to nail down the problem, please tell me. I would appreciate a more specific reply than "please reinstall / verify everything again", no offense...

Thanks again

They responded:
To better assist you with your issue we would like to request a copy of your DXDiag to review. Please follow the steps below and paste the contents of the file into a reply to this message. How to Create a dxdiag report 1. From the Windows key click *Start* menu, then click *Run*. 2. In the *Open* box, type: dxdiag (hit enter) 3. If this is your first time running dxdiag, click *Yes* to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. 4. Click *Save All Information* to create a dxdiag report. 5. Choose a name and location for the dump file (recommend desktop) and click *Save*. Please reply to this message with the contents of the dump. Thank you, Cryptic Technical Support

Ehm... Ok? Didn't I put a dxdiag-Report in my first ticket? But well... Another edit with my full dxdiag it was then... essentially with the same info as the one before (so no need for quoting it here).

The answer:
Thank you for contacting us about this. We currently lack the information to get an accurate picture of the issue you discuss in your ticket. Please edit this ticket and include as much information as you can, so that we can do our best to resolve your issue. Helpful information may include: 1) Your DxDiag shows that your audio drivers are not digitally signed which means they could be causing a problem. Have you tried upgrading to the latest official release? We appreciate your feedback and thank you for playing!

So I gave them all informations again as they wanted... With the Gameprefs.Pref I included some more logfiles and told them the soundcard should be fine, since the problem started even before installing it:
I use the latest Soundcard-Drivers possible (I have an ASUS Xonar D1). The error already occured, when I was using the Realtek onboard Audio device, so I don't think the audio drivers cause this issue.

Here are more informations (seperated with lines):

And yes: I run the game in admin mode - the launcher and the client...

And I checked if the Antivirus-Program was causing this... Have Avira AntiVir Premium... I did deactivate it and still had the crashes.

Then I was asked if I run the Client and the Launcher in Admin mode, since the log files state that there were a problem with opening some files... I told them AGAIN that I DO run both applications in Admin mode and even tried turning off my Antivirus to make sure it doesn't disturb the Client...

Finally I got the following answer:
Thank you for contacting us. We have reviewed your issue and have escalated it to the next tier of support for further review. Once we hear back from them we will relay their findings to you. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

I was crossing fingers: Maybe now I get something else than the usual copy & paste stuff... Then they wrote:
Please try uninstalling your video card drivers and the drivers for the PhysX drivers and installing the latest drivers available for your video card (the latest version of the PhysX drivers will be included in this update). Finding out What Video Card You Have 1. Click on Start 2. Click on Run, or in Vista just skip to the next step 3. Type "dxdiag" into the dialog box and press Enter. 4. Click on the Display tab. The name of the card and chip type is listed as Name/Chip type: Make a note of it. Finding and Downloading a Newer Driver 1. Go directly to the Web site of your driver's manufacturer. 2. Click on the link for your video card, brand of video card or brand of video chip (if you don't have a separate video card). 3. Follow instructions to download the driver. 4. Save the file on your computer's desktop. Installing the New Driver on XP 1. Open the Control Panel on your computer, Double-Click on Add or Remove Programs. 2. Find the drivers for your video card, and click the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions. Restart your computer if asked. 2. Double-click on the icon for the downloaded driver file. 3. Follow installation instructions. 4. Restart the computer if asked. Installing the New Driver on Vista/Win 7 1. Open the Control Panel on your computer, Under the Programs section, click the Uninstall a program. 2. Find and select the drivers for your video card and click the Uninstall/Change button and follow the instructions. Restart your computer if asked. 2. Double-click on the icon for the downloaded driver file. 3. Follow installation instructions. 4. Restart the computer if asked. Sincerely, Cryptic Studios Technical Support

So guess what I did... I even used some tool to get rid of the old drivers before I installed the new ones from scratch... Didn't help...
Another crash just happened after two minutes beeing in game. Wanted to adjust some things in the options when the game crashed. The Error ID is: 1679028.
Your card may be over heating which is causing your machine to crash. Please try the following. You can try running this advance option , it should lessen the load on your GPU and may cause your card to run cooler. Of course if your computer doesn't have sufficient cool capabilities then this wouldn't help you. 1. Launch the game to the login screen. 2. Click on options. 3. In the options window under "Advanced command line" type "-perframesleep 10 " (not including the quotes), then click OK. 4. Launch the game. Sincerely, Cryptic Studios Technical Support
    Hi again,

first of all: My Machine did never crash completely. The Application crashed to desktop with and without CrypticError Message.

I typed in the "-perframesleep 10" command as you told me. I also did check the Fans and even set them to max with manual override after your suggestion this might be an overheating issue.

But sadly I had another Crash right now with ERROR ID unknown (same problem with sending you error reports as mentioned before). It happened when I was in an intense combat in space, Deep Space Encounter with some other players... We were fighting for about 20 or 30 minutes through different waves when suddenly the application crashed to desktop.

So I guess we can rule out: overheating, old drivers, too high graphic settings, admin mode, antivir and conflicts with my soundcard. Sorry, I wish I had some better logfiles to help you hunt down that issue...
Greetings! Is there something specific you are doing before the client Crashes? For example, are you trying to transfer to another Map, like being Down to a planet, or warping to another sector map? Thank you for playing! -GM Drannic

    Hello,

unfortunately the crashes to desktop cannot be tied to certain events that I could reproduce. Sometimes I was middle in a space battle or on ground, sometimes I was just flying through sector space. Sometimes I just opened my inventory or character status screen in space or on ground when the game chrashes. Also the time before these crashes appeared differed immensly - they happened after mere minutes with me doing absolutely nothing except changing the camera perspective, sometimes they happened after solid hours of uninterrupted gaming. I tried to shut down some graphic options or use safe mode, but still they happen.

I even checked if my keyboard or mousedriver had anything to do with this, since I had the feeling it was tied to pushing the spacebar or left/right mousebuttons together (that's how I prefer to control my toon because I like my camera to follow it). But this did not bring any results. Since this crashes cannot be predicted or reproduced I am really out of ideas.

What I do not understand is that there seem to be two kinds of crash with no explenation why or how they happen:

    1. The game freezes and after a few seconds the CrypticError Window comes up and let's me write down what happened before (although it lately has "unknown" for ID as mentioned before). After such a crash the launcher starts the verify process of all files automatically.

    2. The game just crashes to desktop with a Windows 7 window up, telling me the Client Application did not work properly and that windows is looking for a solution - still it does not find any... After this kind of crash the launcher does not run a full validation so I run it via "force verify".

Thank you for all your effort to help me.

I also will try to run the game on my Macbook Pro (2,33 Ghz Core 2 duo, ATI Radeon X1600, 3GB Ram, WinXP via Bootcamp) - during beta and shortly before I got my new PC the game run there without problems (and minimum graphic details). I'll check if that still is the case.
Hello, maybe one of these CrypticError Tickets might help you:

    3986136

    11308780

I had a complete download and reinstallation of STO in a different folder and was into the game for 5 minutes with default graphic options (nearly highest quality) before the latest crash happened... so I guess my game-files are not corrupt either, since these were new.
Please try updating your drivers for your audio card, or removing the drivers you have install for your sound card and letting windows install the driver it likes. The second crash you submitted is the game running into issues telling your sound card what to do. Sincerely, Atari Account Services

    Hello,

since I was using the latest Drivers available for my soundcard and windows didn't find any plug&play drivers instead, I tried to deactivate and deinstall the soundcard and run the game without sound for a while... But still, some crashes to desktop occured.

This ErrorID might be of especial interest, since the crash happened during the time when my Soundcard was deactivated and the system was able to send you a full memory dump...

    ID: 11315538

Also there were some other crashes before that I have some ErrorIDs from. Here are my descriptions and the error IDs:

I was using transwarp to get to sol. When the Map was supposed to change, the game crashed to desktop right before the loading screen dissapearded.

Now the Launcher Crashed right after the verification of the files - that happened because of that last crash...

Another Crash of the Launcher before the Game even was loaded. Happened right after Windows 7 closed the Application because of an unknown error.

I have a similar issue as you do, I bought the game when it was released. The game was running well until last week or so. None of my ground missions crashed, its when I exit a space mission that my game crashes.

I will also be opening a ticket with Cryptic and will post here on your thread.

PLEASE NOTICE THAT I EDITED THE FEW POSTS ABOVE AND THE FIRST POST... so here is my last part (4):
    Hello again,

right after the Season 1.1 Update I was able to play without any crashes using the safe mode -option. But today the launcher loaded the latest update and now I had a crash even if I did again use safe mode. Please have a look at this Error ID: 11323811

As I said, I have the latest soundcard driver available and even if I did deactivate or deinstall the card, it did not help. I think the graphic card or the OS might be the problem? It was strange that the game was working when I did use safe mode... but since the last crash happened even then, maybe there are different things comming together in my machine?

Thanks and have a nice day!

There are a few troubleshooting options available to you, sorry for the dupes if you have all already tried some of these steps. Please note that once these options are set you should not have to makes these changes again for the specific application. After the application is closed all default options for windows should be reverted back and not affect any other applications. All the options mentioned were designed by Microsoft for the sole purpose for trouble shooting. They should not have any adverse affects and if there are any concerns all changes can be reverted by going back though the steps below and disabling the mentioned options. Run in Compatibility Mode Compatibility mode allows newer operating systems to run older applications & games with fewer conflicts. This is helpful because some applications designed for earlier operating systems can have issues running in Windows 7 or Vista (they didn’t exist for compatibility testing at the time), and their new features might cause conflicts with a seasoned game or program. Steps for running in Compatibility Mode 1.)For Patching Problems: Right-click the icon for the game. 2.)For Installation Problems: Right-click the setup.exe icon. 3.)Click Properties. 4.)Click the Compatibility tab. 5.)Check the box next to Run this program in compatibility mode. 6.)Select the version Windows XP SP2. 7.)Click OK. Disable desktop composition and visual themes Desktop composition and visual themes are options in Windows Vista and Windows 7 that enhance the appearance of your desktop. An example of this would be Windows Aero, which is a visual option that allows your windows and applications to have a transparent boarder around them. Disabling visual themes and desktop composition allows applications to run without these options. When you exit the applications these settings will be restored. Steps for disabling Desktop Composition 1.)In the Compatibility mode tab go to the section labeled settings. 2.)Check the box for Disable desktop composition and Disable Visual themes. 3.)Click OK. Run as Administrator Running an application as an administrator is required for many applications to ensure that it is run with the proper permissions for Windows. Even if your user account has administrative privileges this does not always mean that the application is being granted the proper access. This is typically needed when running applications on systems where there are multiple user accounts or when attempting to run older games. Steps for running as administrator 1.)For Patching Problems: Right-click the icon for the game. 2.)For Installation Problems: Right-click the setup.exe icon. 3.)Select the "Run as admin" option. Sincerely, Atari Account Services

And BOOM... CLOSED the ticket as "solved" before I was able to answer. Well thanks for that...

As you might imagine: I tried the compatibility mode... AGAIN... still have crashes in space and on ground... Sometimes I play for hours, sometimes STO crashes to desktop after a few minutes with me doing nothing special. Even the launcher crashed sometimes with Cryptic Error afterwards. I mean: My old macbook doesn't have that problems when running this game. Why my new machine? After all I tried? Doesn't make any sense to me.

I am a little angry now, since they just closed my ticket and I get tired of this TRIBBLE (excuse me).

I would have really appreciated someone to talk to me and not using this copy & paste stuff all the time. When the GM answered I had some hopes but then the Atari people came into play and I am back where I started...

So that's my story so far. Be my guest, if you have some ideas :)

At the moment I am using an "ASUS Xonar D1" with the latest Driver Version 7.12.8.1777 (2010/01/08) again, but also tried older driver versions of the card.

I deactivated Realtek onboard sound via Bios, so this cannot be the problem.

    I tried three combinations:
    • NO soundcard activated (neither Asus nor realtek) with asus deinstalled and realtek deacitvated.
    • Realtek only.
    • Asus only.

In all three events some crashes occured - and I was not able to nail down the cause.

I think maybe there are different types of crash I experience and since the ErrorIDs don't tell me what happened, I am not able to tell which one caused which crash.

I hoped for more info by the GM about the ErrorIDs. If he told me: "It was always your sound device", I would even buy a new card... But since I tried that many different soundcard-configurations I don't know what to think...

I bought this game yesterday on 13th of may and I installed the patch. I do not know if it is the patch or not, but sometimes when I go to a new system, like the sol system for example I get the message server disconnects.
So far from what I've seen I like this game, but this server disconnects error is getting really annoying.

Back when the game first came out, some people (myself included) were having the same problems you're having, but we figured out a workaround. Some of the problems you're experiencing are tied to the game's lighting. Try switching "Lights per object" to minimum and turn off dynamic lighting. It makes the game look a little ******, but I haven't had a crash since.

    Hope this helps.
