Launcher Patching Issues: Sub 1MPBS internetz :{

First, I am not at home atm but I will get the nettest app results when I get home.

The main issue is I have crapptastic wireless via NomadISP, rated at under 1mpbs and usually hovering around 500-700kpbs IF I am lucky(surprisingly runs BC2 on PS3 decently..maybe PC needs better WIFI card/USB network adapter I dunno..) I can't even like reset the router, the freaking transponder thing that suplies the signal is shared and is siting atop a 15foot pole lol. Only can mess with stuff on my end, I can't really do much with the signal from Nomad's end. I guess it's off a T1 line but its ***** really, I get pings to most other games like CODWAW in the 300+ range.

. I am also capped to 1.5gb per day, so obviously when I logged in to the patcher for the first time after i installed the client via CD I see 2+gb....FUN!!!!!! Maybe i can play by next week...

But for some reason the patcher will stop downloading, and it also bizzarly shows what is left going DOWN(i.e. 2100mb goes to 2085mb 45min later) but the figure on the left never grows and always starts at zero kbs each time i start the patcher. Is this normal for STO? Usually a patcher will show something like 350mb/2000mb with a percentage remaining.

The percentage for me usually resets each time I restart it as well, though I have noticed the remainder mb chunk(2000+) is going down ever so slowly.

Any thoughts?

Anyone with sub-DSL actually manage to play this and patch alright?

Any suggestions on methods to speed up my connection? Like i said i may have to look into getting a better network card/USB adapter combo or something, but my budget is SUPER TIGHT.

THANKS!

    Quick question:

Is there a simple way to automatically restart the patcher if the downloading stops for any reason? Kinda like an auto-refresh or something or other?

    Thanks!

Oh i can count the days until I can move and get 20mpbs+internet again.

you can hit the cancel and then patch again but thats all. The patcher use port 7255 to download the patch so if that port is being filtered or blocked you will have problem patching.
You could go to the launcher option and select one of the porxies and selech patch by poxy option and that may help.

I have read some conflicing reports so far about the patcher, but can it actually LOSE progress? Or does it generally pick up where it left off?

I'll have to try the proxy thing if it keeps bumping me off the download.

Gotta get the Nettest results as well.

It doesn't lose progress, but the counter does start at zero; because you're downloading what you don't have yet, basically a custom patch for what's missing on your system.

Well, if you are using a laptop instead of a PC, you could go to a McDonalds or Starbucks where they have wifi and patch it from there.

I wonder if Cryptic would consider posting the patches on the forums. I would love that. I can get to these forums from Work, but cannot play the game from here (not that I would play from work, no game is worth your job). So, if the patches were listed on the website, people like me could download them, but them on a USB stick and carry them home.

Are you listening Devs? Make the patches available on your website. Some of us have really fast Net access at work and could download the patches, copy them to a USB stick and take them home to speed things up. Just a suggestion... ;)

yeah i had thought about doing that at my work but I dont think that would sit well with the managment hehe.

It's on desktop too so I am kinda hosed. I have an ancient laptop with no wifi access but that's not a bad idea.

I'm trying to see if proxy does anything in keeping the download going.

So far it does seem to be having fast DL spikes. My avg dl speed is about 60kbps...when it should be 500kbps MINIMUM /cry.

Do you think using a proxy in general might be a way to circumvent some of the BS of my wireless service, might be good for actual gameplay if I can open up the bandwidth a bit more.

I mean its a T1 line, there should be room there. And where I live not many folks even use it as its spendy $60 for 1.5gb day/, $40 for 500mb/day.

Not sure if Proxy really did do much after all..but all I know is hte patcher is down to 180mb!

After 2 days of on and off downloading, I am finally ready to play I hope.

Anymore patching after the 2.5gb ish?

Also, is there ANY way to keep the patcher from timing out/stop downloading besides hitting cancel and then patch every 10min? It's super annoying and almost unbearable when i get 50kbps download speeds.

Yes, but you're not going to like it; get internet service that doesn't have the latency and packet loss issues of wireless. I'm aware that may not be possible in your area; hence why I said you wouldn't like it.
