Launcher question

Just bought the game, installed and clicked play. Been staring at a little box for about 4 hours now. *Cryptic Launcher Autoupdate* *Trying to update the launcher, please be patient* Is there some kinda gigantic launcher file or is this thing not updating? Don't think it's patching game files because there is no progress bar or anything, I can't tell if it's doing anything or not.

    Standard thing to check:
    1. If using Vista or Win7 besure to set the program (launcher(startrek oneline.exe and gameclient.exe) to run as admin.
    2. Besure your firewall and antivirus are set to allow the programs access to the net.
(you may need to disable or shutdown the programs temporary to verfiy they are not the problem)
    3. IE browser is not set to work offline, even if you use a different browser.
    4. make sure router and firewall are allowing ports 7000-7500 (ports open not forwarded)
try tracert patchserver.crypticstudios.com and download and run nettest
    Nettest:
    Go to http://files.champions-online.com/nettest.exe
Download this file and run it
A command prompt should appear running the test automatically

For a good lag free connection should have Column 1 and 3 have values around 500 kb/sec (outgoing/incoming), column 2 has values around 20 kb/sec (transfer rate).
    post the results

Also if using win7 or vista do not install the program in the program files directory, can cause directory and file permission problems.

Tks for the tips, tried all that stuff and launcher does same thing, Is there any kinda progress bar that you get? Or do you get the same small box until the game is fully updated?

The small box is when it is trying to connect to the patch server to download the latest version of the launcher. if it is not going away then something is blocking the program from accessing the patch server.

Updated ie and that didn't fix it. It's set to work online. Nettest didn't have any timeouts. Guess I gota call my isp and see if there blocking any of those ports? Firewall is off/av is off, don't think thats the problem. Using dialup so there's no router to mess with.

It'll run on dialup, i'm just missing something. All the recent games in the past few years say broadband connection required, but it's not. They run fine on dialup. I am able to dl the whole game from the website, that seems to work fine.

the patching is different that downing an game. the patcher actually handshanks withthe patcher letting it know which files have been pactched and which files need to be patch. there is alos a timeout set in the patcher connection so if it is too slow will disconnect the connection if the timeout is not answered in time.

I heard games like WOW run OK on 56k but really...that's rediculously slow.

I have sub 1MBPS myself(usually 500kbps, aka 50kbps downloads) but i cringe to think of anything slower.

And the whole of the gaming community is shifting more andmore towards faster/larger data packages.

Case in point a couple years ago 20mpbs was pretty rare and spendy, now its almost the norm for most gamers.
