I never heard of X-Fire until this game ( i know now.. but who cares?).. how do they benefit my playing STO.. if they have no effect in game, then who cares if it works with STO or not.. and why should Developers waste their time trying to make the game X-Fire compatible when they can be coding more in game conternt.. why can't X-Fire adjust their program to work with STO?
I think it is unprofessional of X-Fire to not alter their programming to work with the games on the market. Game devs need to be working on the game, not compatibility with a totally unrelated, non game changing, 3rd rate, 3rd party program. Kinda reminds me of Steam.

At the moment, we don't have social networking initiatives built into the game. It's something we're continually investigating, though.
Actually X Fire is a messenger program that uses DirectX to pop up messages ingame, and gives you some other functionality. It's quite useful. I use it and it does sort of track STO.
My profile lists me as having played 402 hours so far and 23 hours in the last 7 days.
HOWEVER...there does seem to be some overall tracking issues....which I don't know for certain who's problem that is...Cryptic or XFire....
With the number or people ingame at any given time, the hours for STO should be higher...

I think the tracking issue is abit of both sides, since Cryptic is releasing Patches about every week now, X-fire has a harder time keep up to date with what verison of STO that's running. X-Fire said they've added more detection settings, but every now and then I'll have to exit X-Fire, reloggin, and THEN it will active in-game features.
Yup I've been having the issue with xfire not detecting the game too. Unfortunately it seems to happen these days every time the game is patched. Unfortunately it's up to xfire to figure out this issue, not cryptic.

it's fine that you don't use XFire, but a lot of us do. in fact, if you check the coinciding thread on the XFire forums, you'll see that there are quite a few who use XFire's ability to record screenshots, in-game video, and other aspects to improve their gaming experience. i've used XFire for years, and it's got a lot of great uses, social and otherwise. it wouldn't take a lot of effort for Cryptic to get with the folks at XFire and share some notes to determine the problem. if nothing else, potential customers could use XFire to see how many people have been playing the game recently... when they see no activity whatsoever for a few days (or weeks), they'll likely think that the game's not worth their time and move along to something else.
the XFire crew claims they've been working on trying to fix this issue on their end... i'm just wondering if Cryptic has put forth any effort as well?

Should Cryptic really waste development time to support a third party product?
It seems to me that since Cryptic has no vested interest in XFire and has better things to have their developers work on, that if XFire wants to support STO it should be up to XFire, not Cryptic.
Personally I'd rather Cryptic spend their efforts on the game itself than worry about the 30 or so people still using X-Fire.
alright, let's see here... as of right now, there are over 15 million registered users, of which 300k are online. not exactly "30 or so."
and i'm not saying i think Cryptic should "spend their efforts" (yes, 'effort' is the word i used, but not in the context that they make it a corporate priority as it seems you're implying). XFire is a simple app, requiring only the ability to track the launcher.exe to work properly. i'm guessing Cryptic is already very aware of why there's a problem for XFire users; all i'm asking is that they inform someone at XFire as to that reason, or officially tell those of us who do use XFire to **** off about it. it's not about "wasting development time" at all, it's about merely communicating with the people at XFire, something which every other major game developer has done already.
::shrug:: i had no idea XFire was such a touchy subject.
This does suck. I used it so that I could have a web browser without alt+tabbing out of the game. It's nice to be able to bring up an overlay with a web browser in it without leaving STO. Means I can look up stuff on Memory Alpha or chat on the forums without minimizing the game itself.
Try this.
Tools> Options> Privacy> Uncheck "Idle status active"
While STO is open restart Xfire and let it do the game detection and everything before signing on.
This worked for me.
Only other things to note.
I compared my xfire settings with Valus who's xfire STO detection is working on his systems.
He has two systems that he uses to play STO.
I have 2 systems that I use to play STO.
Here are the major differences.
His are both ATI and AMD.
Mine are both Intel and Nvidia.
The only other differences I could notice were in xfire.
He has Idle Status unchecked on both of his systems.
I have Idle Status checked on both of my systems.
He has logging enabled.
I don't have logging enabled.
I hope this helps!!!
upon applying this fix (which is really too simple to have created problems for this long), my in-game browser, voice, screenshots, and video worked fine.
there's an update to this issue. Phrozenblur on the XFire forums discovered the problem, and listed the fix as follows:
upon applying this fix (which is really too simple to have created problems for this long), my in-game browser, voice, screenshots, and video worked fine.
That didnt fix it for me, unless i want to restart xfire every time i play STO, in which case that isnt a fix.
::shrug:: i had no idea XFire was such a touchy subject.
It's a touchy subject because of the "OMG OMG OMG...STO is teh suxxors because it is only ranked number 1322 on X-Fire. Wombats Online is ranked 14! DOOOOOOM." posts.
I didn't realize that X-Fire did anything but track the number of hours a person plays. I may have to look into it.

it's better than having no XFire in-game at all... however you are right. i was so excited it worked the first time, i didn't try going back in to see if it would work a second time with XFire already started (which it didn't).
but a workaround is better than nothing at all
the latest XFire update yesterday has fixed the issue, no need to close & reopen apps. i haven't turned 'Idle Detect' back on again, though. figure i don't need it anyway.

And to the bloke who said Xfire only has 30 users? Well, I use Xfire to record bugs and link it to the bug forum for the devs.

Oh well. Hopefully it'll be fixed someday.
cant wait for xfire to fix it even if Cryptic wont co operate with them on this

yeah, they've been "working" on it for a month now...
Too little, too late. I've stopped using it, no intention of ever picking it back up.
Can you play the game @ 17FPS ?
And yes I've had that same bug as well. Also the can't move my char bug, I just beam up and down
so, enjoy it while it lasts.
