Tact or Engineer Cruiser for pvp

Hello,

I'm new to the game and am trying to figure out if I should roll tact or engineering captain for my cruiser end game. I want to be able to pvp and pve well, and I've read debates on both sides of the issue about which is better. I don't really care about what it is I'm doing, such as healing, tanking, dpsing, because I've done every roll in the past in other mmorpg's, and I enjoyed them all.

What I'm interested in is finding out what the general consensus is on what it is that cruisers do best in pvp toward end game. Am I better off going engineering so I can better support my allies / survive longer in pvp for sustained dps? Or am I better off going tact so I can take down enemies faster than an engineering captain, but still have survivability? I read somewhere that being defensive in pvp is gimped at this point, and it's a better idea to focus on damage mitigation in terms of destroying your enemy before they do too much damage to you.

all input is appreciated!

Well in this game, you can have any ship you want. You can be an Engineer in a Tactical Ship or be a Tactical Captain in a Cruiser.

So if you want kills, but being easily killed, go with an Escort. If you want surviability and not so much luck in getting kills, go with a Cruiser. Though with Klingon Battlecruisers, you can pretty much have the survivability with the offensive power of an Escort.

As indicated above, there are are differing advantages to the combinations. I personally run an engineer in a cruiser as my main for high survivability and steady pew pew, but I also fly an escort and as an engi I bring some more survivability to my escort, at a cost of less damage than a tac officer would have in an escort. Likewise, a tac flying my cruiser might have less survivability, but would do more damage than I would.

In the end it really comes down to personal preference honestly, and what you would prefer. Survivability? I'd say Engi/Cruiser. High damage? Tac/Escort. A blend, more skewed towards survivability? Tac/Cruiser. Blend, skewed towards damage? Engi/Escort.

I've found cruisers can be a diverse platform that you can tweak as you go to serve many roles, regardless of pilot class. My build is focused on damage and survivability with an engi/cruiser, but my heals are also there for me to act as the team healer as well so I pull double-duty on that. I could just as easily turn around and pop in more heals though if needed, although the mix I have now seems to leave me with a good balance of offense, defense, and healing.

Im more afraid of agressive tacticals with tractor beam than engineeres tbh. If i notice they are too good at tanking, i rather leave them be, as shooting them is waste of time, especially if they have 2+RSP.

I am a tac in a cruiser and I have decent survivability I use RSP a lot have 2 eng teams and 1 sci team. for fire power I run 2 ap beam banks 1 AP array and quantum up front with 2 AP arrays and 1 quantum and tricobalt int he rear. With BOv, TSS 1, and HYT and Aceton field I can be pretty lethal to anything not captained by an engineer. I have had my BOv crit for over 10K with quantums critting over 20K and of course tricobalts with crazy crits. The only thing that gives me issues in my hip are phaser cannons and stacked AP(x)
