I get into the game, past character selection, and within minutes (sometimes much less) get this colossal slowdown, so bad that I can't get any keyboard commands through to shut down the program. Not just ask STO to quit, I mean actually ALT F4 the sod or trying to get a CTL ALT DEL command screen, even Windows key it. I don't know what's wrong because Windows doesn't make an event log, because it never actually crashes, and niether does any driver. I have to turn off the PC at the power button because it simply won't resolve by recovering it or just crashing.
Never actually seen anything like it. Mass Effect 2 works just fine....well, for now. I tend to expect my computer to make me look stupid by revealing a general Windows fault after I've roundly pinned the blame on one particular game or something. There's no fault in the STO files, I made it verify them all.
Have you updated to the newest video and chipset drivers? Videocard temps have been a big problem from launch of STO. Many graphic drivers will lock the stock fan at 30% on default, you may try using Rivatuner to override the settings and make sure its at 100%. Is your ram overclocked? have you benchmarked with 3dmark or anything to test how stable everything is? You may try downloading Prime95 and letting it stress the system to see if temps or drivers are an issue.
No, it's nothing like that. I had problems a little while ago with the Windows Management Interface (what a delightful wretch that was) and I updated everything then, and got GPU-Z to log my temperature when I need to so I know that's fine.
If it was a stress issue, Mass Effect 2 would smash the hell out of it in seconds, but I can play that for hours (and have, like a crack addict). As it is, STO performs its fault in just a few moments after actually starting gameplay.
At the moment I assume it's probably got something to do with the new round of problems people are reporting after that 'back end' maintenance Cryptic did. I'd actually been playing totally fine that whole day until 7.15pm.....15 minutes after they were scheduled to finish whatever it was they were doing, STO just starting doing this to me without any of my machine having been modified at all.
