I have a friend who's going on vacation for a few weeks and would like me to play his STO character for him while he's away- I also have an STO account. Just wanted to know if it were possible for me to switch back and forth from my account to his and use my computer using his log-in information without it TRIBBLE anything up or messing up my account status?

Yes, you can do that. My husband and I have separate accounts and play from the same computer (for the time being, my computer was better but it blew up).
However, only the person whose account it is is supposed to log into an account. You can get your friend's account banned by playing it for him, especially if you go announcing it on the forums. Keep that in mind.
Also, my response to the situation is that you must be a better friend than your friend is. He goes on vacation and you have to grind for two accounts? And you won't even get to reap the rewards from one of them?
Ok, so you're spending your time and effort to level his character up while he's off somewhere in la la land enjoying himself, obviousy doing something more fun than STO otherwise he'd be playing it on his vacation... Yeah, some friend he is. Someone like you deserves better.
Well, the guy works 7 days a week, 12 hrs a day, at a shop that he owns, he loves Trek, but rarely gets to play. He's bummed that I made Admiral already and he's still LTnt. Commander. I thought I'd give him a hand. I really dont mind - He'll be going on vacation soon so I thought I might help him level a bit-
I dont think ne1 would care if you played your buds account man go for it its not like its such a big deal, everybody plays each others accounts, hellz most pplz play on the same puter anyways and they will switch back and forth all the time you wont get in trouble for this unless your charging maybe and you ran around telling ppl and someone reported it. But I assure you you wont get in trouble over just this man, and guarantee like at least 8 busybody tattletales viewing this thread and probably 2 of these three other posters have probably already reported you, so if your not in trouble yet you probably wont be its cool man have fun.

You don't mind getting you or your friends accounts banned?
Here is the REAL main reason that actions like this are not allowed and highly discouraged by both Cryptic and your fellow players.
Let's say for one reason or another, you won't be able to play for a few days. But you don't want all that playtime and medal-earning to go to waste, plus maybe your fleet needs you to run Infected or some other mission. So you decide to try and find someone else to play your account for a few days.
You find another player, let's call him Bob, through a friend of yours. You've seen him around a few times, he seems nice enough, and he offers to take care of your character. You agree, give him your login information and password, and depart.
A few days later you return, and check on your character. Oh, but what's this? It looks like someone used 175,000 of your energy credits to buy some stuff on the exchange, and then mailed the items to some other character! And one of your bridge officers is gone, replaced with some other officer with different skills. Not only that, but your last Respec Token that you've been saving since you won't get any more free ones has been used up and you've been respecced from space combat to ground support! What the heck is going on??
So, somewhat angrily, you file a GM Support Ticket, claiming that you've lost a bunch of valueable items and credits and want them back. Mr. GM looks over this ticket, and looks over your logs to see what happened. He sees that you logged on. That you bought some items. Sent some stuff to other people, presumably friends. That you did a respec. That you dismissed one officer and got a new one. Nothing out of the ordinary there. No bugs that make items disappear, no threatening or offering trades that take advatange of you. Confused, he asks what the problem is, as everything seems normal.
"Oh, none of that was me," you say. "Someone else was using my account."
Uh-oh.
Well now, who is the GM to believe? The GM has no way of knowing if you're telling the truth, or screwed up and want a free do-over, or just want some free items. The GM can't tell who was sitting in front of the computer screen doing these actions, much less why. And they most likely didn't type into chat "lol, just stole some guy's account, now I'm taking all his stuff. I sure hope some GM doesn't look over these chat logs and catch me!"
The GM then tells you that there is nothing he can do to help you, as he cannot verify your claim. All he can see is what "you" did. Then he tells you that account sharing is against the terms and policies of the game. With your inventory screen a lot lighter, you no doubt now see why.
Some people may counter that they only share with friends, family, or other people they definitely trust. And while that's a step up, it doesn't make you invulnerable. What if they go somewhere, leave the computer logged on by accident for a few minutes, and someone else walks by and messes things up? What if they get a virus that has a keylogger, and someone else gets your password and account info when they use it to log in?
Now a lot of these situations are fairly unlikely to happen, but that's not the point. I (and others) just want you to be aware of what the dangers and risks are when players do things like this, why it is against the rules, and why GM's won't be able to help you if something does go wrong.
Are you likely going to get in trouble for what you've posted you're doing here? Almost certainly not. But do be careful to take precautions with any kind of account sharing. Most of the times, nothing will likely go wrong. But IF they do, they do so very catastrophically, and there will be no one to help you then.
And that's the cause for all these warnings about why account sharing is against the rules, and why I wrote this post.
You don't mind getting you or your friends accounts banned?
That's harsh.
Obviously I did not know the reprocussuions of potentially playing a friends account- thats why I posted the question before I decided if I would attempt it- Check the original post
Anyway - this seems like alot more trouble than its worth - my friend'll have to level his self
Actually, some cryptic clarification on this would be useful.
It is against the TOS to sell or transfer an account, but the only entry in the legal nonses that they have posted is:
"You may not share the Account or the Login Information with anyone other than as expressly set forth herein."
The only problem with that statement is, they then do not go on to expressly set forth anything regarding allowing another person to access your account. They do go on to say you can't sell it.
And the only GM post I can find on the forums says they do not "Support" account sharing, it does not specifically state that account sharing is not allowed.
I never agreed with this whole "account sharing is barred"......If I bought a game, and my wife wants to play, using one of the character slots, in my view.....that is fair usage!
I'm almost cetrain that the US Supreme Court has coverd such cases, when the music idustry tried to say that you could not burn copies of a CD to play in your car, house or at your job, without having to by one copy per location you wanted to use it in. I only pay for one cable service, and everyone in my house can watch the TV.
I pay $15.00 per month, I bought extra character slots from C-store, if my wife wants to play a character (which she doesn't) I'm not going to say..."No, that would violate some silly rule".

It is, and there are reasons why you shouldn't anyway. Which I've already stated...
Someone must be closin his curtains at night
rather than making you use your electricity
Loose lips sink ships......................
Its a liabilty issue, not a helping hand issue.
why did i just get a vision of Dog the bounty hunter going round that guys house ::p
