I've been playing for about a week now and I'm curious what Power actually does in the game. I'm assuming when I set for assault mode or defense mode it changes how quickly the shields charge, how much damage weapons do? Are there other effects? What's the effect of engine or axillary power? I've looked around online a bit but I can't find anything that explains the mechanic well.

You have it right. Weapons do more damage if at a high power level, except for Torps and Mines. Shields regen faster (and not at all if power to shields drops 25 or less). Power to engines increases non-full impulse speed. Auxillary affects both your turn rate, repair rate, and several abilities.

Ok, that makes sense. So something like a weapons battery that increases power +75 to weapons would increase damage while it was active?
If so, is there a reference for how different energy levels affect system performance?

Swoops in to the thread. A Beginner and question on ship's power. That means it's time for .... my Beginner's Guide to Ship's Power. The link is below in my sig. It should answer most of your questions.

Excellent guide, thank you! The only thing I still don't understand is what extra power does in terms of numbers. What does 50 power vs 100 power in weapons do to a weapon that puts out 100 dps for example? Or how much does 25 vs 100 in auxiliary affect turn rate? Is there some formula or guide for that as well?

It should just be at 0 that your shields drop.
