Give the factions a large base on either end of the map. Between the 2 bases, there are capture points. These capture points spawn ships that will assist the players in fighting. This creates a very nice incentive to capture points.
Also, the bases themselves will have turret defenses (some not tons) but these do not respawn very fast if at all. Players can heal their own base and shields, which will give support a whole new role in this type of map.
Sounds like it would be interesting. I suggest making the end bases just large extra-tough ships instead, since we already have ship-to-ship weapons, buffs and healing abilities, so it would require no new abilities or extra programming. Just limit the ship to a very small area so it doesn't wander off.
Defensive and offensive attributes in the same map, similar to Shanty Town on the ground. I like it.
Edit for more thoughts: It could even be a combination space and ground map - space battles up to the base, then beam down and fight it out inside the base (ground) until the base commander (a tough SOB) is killed (with the defending team healing and buffing the commander and fighting enemies). I am sure I would like that, but not everyone likes ground combat. Perhaps having some space combat continuing while the base commander is attacked would alleviate those concerns, then make it a 25v25 map or something like that so not everyone has to be in any one area.
Spawns would have to be located away from the bases to prevent zerg defense. Having the spawns located elsewhere would give those players that don't want to participate in the ground combat something to do in space while the ground battle is raging - keep defensive reinforcements from getting to/into the base.
The idea of combining space and ground in one map would make a lot of players happy.. mad too,...but integrating the pvp experience in one package would be great
Perhaps the objective becomes vulnerable. Then you can beam down to it. But the opposing team can also beam down to it as well, to defend it.
Of course, if they all do this..then they are not attacking YOUR base.... They would have to try to drive your team out or repair their base/ship and then the opposing team would be forced to beam back out into space.
Could be complicated...but .. not a bad thing for the devs to consider.
Space and ground objectives in one PvP map sounds like fun. It could be set up as a king-of-the-hill type game, where there is a station in the middle of the map that you need to board to capture, with spawn points at opposite sides of the map.
