Is there any rhyme or reason to the BOFF skill binds?

I really just don't get it.

It's bad enough that everytime you rank up to a new ship you have to reassign the key binds for the boff skills, but now that I've made Captain, I can't even find some of them.

Does anyone know how each slot is assigned?

I thought all the alt-skills were sort of dedicated to boffs and at Captain there are only 10 slots available which should be plenty for the basic key binds, but they are simply not registering as such.

If anyone can explain how the system actually works it would be much appreciated.

    Once you are in your ship, press 'P' to get a list of all space skills, and assign them to whatever keyslot you want.

    Yeah, I get that part!

    But everytime you rank up and get a new ship and/or new officers those keyslot assignments change and it's driving me crazy!

    Up to this point I've only been using the basic keybinds (i.e., normal/ctrl/alt skills for keyslot pages 1-3) but I remember reading last week somewhere that you can import more advanced keybinds and I think I've reached the point where I need to figure out how to do that. I can't even imagine what Admiral is gonna be like once that 5th station comes online!

    But it would really help to understand why the game reassigns the slots the way they do...???

    Anyone???

    Different ships allow for different layouts. This way, you can have your Sci vessel all setup how you like, and when you then switch out to your Escort, it's setup for those BOffs.

    And I wouldn't sweat that 5th BO console, since it's an Ensign slot only, so it adds only 1 skill. The only ships which should be running out of slots with 3 bars, would be Sci, due to the target subsystem skills of the Sci ships.

    Yep, just reassign the slots. it's really no big deal. I've spent longer just aligning the actaul bars in WoW than I have reassigning the slots in STO.

    Take a deep breath, find a little bit patience, and jobs done.

    Remember you actually have 10 bars of 10 slots, but can show only 3. (I use the 3 hot bar setup with no BO portraits.)

    Yeah, I find it annoying when they rearrange themselves too.

    Its a bit annoying, but no big deal. You don't reach a new rank every day.

    On a sidenote, I don't understand why each single weapon uses a slot AND appears in the weapon box. Why would I need the weapons twice? While the auto-assigning system could rather give me "fire all", "fire beams" and "fire torps" by default; the things that have tiny buttons (compared to the weapons self).

    I've wondered that myself!

    Apparently there is a way to build more advanced key binds than the basic ones listed in the options, so maybe as a 'basic' approach the simplified key binds make a certain amount of sense, but I can't even imagine trying to individually mouse click of the items in the middle of combat!

    I think part of my frustration stems from the fact that early in the game I cleared the weapon slots to make room for other skills and was assigning key binds via the options menu without realizing it was connected to row 3.

    At this point I'm too far into the game with my main toon to consider a restore to defaults approach, but I may do that on an L3 secondary toon and then track how each level shifts...

    Does anyone know off hand what level the tier 5 stations are?

    What I mean is, obviously an escort will have a Commander Tac station, i.e., all 4 powers usable, but do the off branch stations allow LT Cmdr skills to be used or do they stay at LT?

    I had expected the tier 4 escort to grant 3 powers to my science and engineer boffs and sadly that's not the case...
