A number of people have mentioned that the present "cage-match" style PvP bears little resemblance to real military operations, and I would have to agree. Here follows a proposal for a more realistic wartime scenario that would not require a lot of new game resources.
The mission revolves around a slow-moving convoy of merchant ships carrying military supplies for its faction (thus making it a legitimate military target). The models for such ships already exist in the game, so all that would be needed is a really simple AI: the merchant ships move along a predetermined course at a fixed speed, turning or stopping only to avoid obstacles. They should be armed only with one Mk I weapon, which they should use only if a target enters the weapon's arc.
The defending squadron earns points for each merchant ship that exits the map in one piece, while the attacking squadron earns points for each merchant ship that it destroys. These point values can be tuned for balance. This setup also indirectly enforces a time limit on the scenario, based on how long it takes the merchant ships to cross the map. The map can have as much or as little "terrain" as needed to spice up the scenario.
Ideally, one full "mission" should require at least one turn at convoy raiding, and at least one at convoy defense.
I read this thread title and was automatically reminded of Unreal Tournament and the assault maps with the defined objectives and swapping attack/defend.

Good idea.
