As of right now, you can't promote a BO to the rank of captain. Theoretically, if you did, they might just up and leave and get their own command, heh.
But, I do believe that the idea of designating one of your BO's as the First Officer was being tossed around by the devs, though for the life of me I can't place the article of where it was mentioned. When I first read it, it was only an off comment, an add-on really, but it got me so curious as to the implications!

Hopefully one day you will be able to promote them to captain and give them command of one of your previous ships to create your own npc fleet.
Shouldn't be to difficult to transfer the mechanics used to control 4 BO,s in ground combat to using 4 ships in space combat.

Thanks Gt..Kev.. yeah that would be a good idea to have your captain pilot one your own ( as of now ) redundant ships. Hope the Devs incorporate this in a future update

I kinda like the thought of being able to promote a BO to Captain and having them follow you along like a pet in one of your old ships and aid you in battle.

You should never be able to promote a bridge officer to Captain... besides being non-canon, it just doesnt make any sense.

What, I'd rather see as a way to make BOffs continue to improve is to give them multiple abilities of the lower ranks...

So, eventually they might have 2 skills in every rank instead of just one. Something like that makes more sense to me.

Alot of things in STO dont make sense and are not canon. But it wouldn't be a game if it did make sense.

You probrably won't EVER be able to, to be honest.

    For the following reasons:

    1) Non-canon. ST's Starfleet ranks are based on US Naval rank structures as of the 1940s-1960s. There is a rank called "Captain" in the naval structures, but there can only be ONE CAPTAIN PER SHIP. Usually, visiting "captains" receive a social bump up to Commodore to avoid confusion - on every ship, there is ONE AND ONLY ONE Captain.

    2) Promoting a BO to "Captain" and putting him in command of one of your unused ships - well, in effect you're "dismissing" that bridge officer and giving him his own independent command. THe only times in history that such things have happened in the real-life structures that Starfleet is based on is the notion of a "prize crew" - a small amount of crew headed by a commissioned officer, whose ONLY job is to take a captured ship back to port for evaluation/recommissioning. Leading such a crew was considered a choice assignment, as after recommissioning the officer that brought it in was given command of the ship being he'd already "proved himself" by getting the ship back to port intact. Being that in STO we don't have capturable ships (though that would give a whole new role to Boarding Crew - if the boarding crew gets the enemy crew down to 0 they could capture it), this wouldn't really be a option.

OTOH, there is canon evidence that there were 3 O-6 Captains serving aboard Enterprise during the Khitomer Talks: Kirk, Spock, and Scott. (I recently re-watched the DVD and Scotty is definitely wearing Captain rank insignia.) Kirk was in command, but if Starfleet had pay grades, all three would be getting the same base salary.

This confuses me. Starfleet has never promoted a Commander to Captain and given him/her their own ship to command? An Admiral has never commanded a fleet?

I think the idea of promoting a Bridge Officer to command one (or more) of my previous ships is a fantastic idea. Not only would it be a fun mechanic to have in place, it would add to my personal investment and enjoyment in the game.

PVP with your own fleet of 6 - 8 ships would be awesome and would make the fights different everytime.
You would need to have a list of formatons to choose, line echelon, square, cube, cone etc. Pick ships to defend your flagships and others to attack.

now there is a scary thought you BO commanding a ship. They can't jump a small gap in the Fire Caves imagine what they would do in a PvP. Probably go site see or lead the enemy right to you.

We are only talking space here so unless they were to add in asteroids big enough to hide behiind or large nebulas to hide in that won't happen. Would be good if they did.

In Star Trek V & VI there were 3 Captains serving on the Enterprise those being Kirk, Spock, and Scotty. While McCoy, Chekov, & Uhura were all Commanders, the only member of the TOS crew to get promoted to Captain and leave was Sulu. Rare and unusual? Yes. Unheard of or non-canon? No

Also, one could consider Sulu to still be under Kirk's influence. Kirk called and Sulu crossed an entire sector to come to his aid. Sulu did this without consideration for his standing orders, and apparently without regard for his ship and crew ("Fly her apart then!!).

Kirk was pretty much a Captain in name only, in game terms he would be RA5 but still have the "Captain" tag up as his title.

I like the idea of being able to promote one of your BOs to Captain of thier own ship (likely one of your old ships). Then being able to call on them for assistance on a long timer. (Just like Kirk did with Sulu in ST6)
