If one of your posted items in the Exchange is purchased by another player, the Energy Credits are immediately credited to you, and you should see the increase in credits at the bottom-left of your Inventory panel.
Also, if you used the 'arrow down' icon on the UI (where Inventory, Status, Game Control icons are), there is a 'Mail' option. There should be a mail indicating that one of your items have sold.
When Cryptic gets around to putting 'expiration dates' on Exchange postings, then I assume that they will do it like WoW (World of Warcraft) does, and send the unsold item back to the poster in their mail...
If you happen to be playing when your item sells you'll also see a brief message flash across the screen that says something like "Your item in the exchange sold for X credits". But it goes really fast. Easy to miss.
I'm also not certain how accurate the mail is. I've sold lots of items in the exchange and I'm fairly certain I have sold a few without receiving a mail. However, as stated, you *should* get a mail for every item you sell on the exchange.
Travel to the opposition homeland and negotiate with the high council to get your money, and if they dont give ya money, you best painting the walls with blood, till they recognize ya skills.

Hopefully, that answers your question...
