In space, in the top left corner of the area map there is an 'N'.

Please don't tell me this stands for North. This is Space. Not an unwrapped plan of a globe.

I wonder sometimes, I seriously do.

In reality, In charting galactic space, there is actually a North as well as all other points on the compass.

You for real? So as we are now talking 3D, what are the other 2 directions called and how do you define what you want to be North without either poles of a planet?

    Start here and research outward:

    Galactic coordinate system

This is not simple stuff. I hope you have good math skills, or at least an affinity with math :)

5th post down, expand open the spoiler http://forum.gateworld.net/threads/49576-Stargate-Galaxy-Map?p=7456549#post7456549

A 'fictional' Galaxy map, in 2D clearly showing Northern and Southern areas, along with your link to the real concept of the Galactic North and I must concede. There is a North in space.
