I do NOT want a Death Penalty - but here's a solution

Why would you want to enforce a Death Penalty?

Outside of MMO's, name one other game that strips something away from you because you failed to overcome the challenge you were facing?

God Of War? No. Halo? No. Mass Effect? No. Heavy Rain? No. StreetFighter? No.

Basically, other genres do NOT do this - the simple fact that there is a penalty of TIME and FRUSTRATION that you have to repeat the task because it's too hard for you is good enough. Why this feature is present in other MMOs I do not know.

If a Death Penalty were to be included and it stripped XP away from me, my enjoyment of STO would be massively reduced as events out of my control (like Deep Space Encounters, randomly spawning near the Crystalline Entity, facing super-hard PVP opponents etc..) could severely hamper my progression through the game.

A Death Penalty only serves to satisfy the (more vocal on the forum) hardcore Captain + players, not the wider community of more casual players who are still at the lower ranks in my opinion.

The only way I can see this working therefore is to have it OFF at pre-Captain ranks, and then MANDATORY ON when you reach Captain level. This would ensure that those who get to the higher ranks (and therefore those that actually care about a Death Penalty) are satisfied without alienating the lower ranks who simply may find the progression too hard otherwise.

It sounds like the death penalty will be optional so I wouldn't worry too much about it now. They'll put it up on tribble test server first, at any rate, so we can all see exactly what is involved and provide feedback before it goes to Live.

I can see Cryptic putting one in. COH/COV has a XP death pen. One the good side though the DP does not start till you hit LVL? sorry i can't remember. But, they did make so atleast you have a grip on the game before you start suffering from it.

The way the DP works there is half your XP goes to fix the DP while the other half goes to norm lvl gain. So until you make enough XP to finish the DP you will only be getting half XP to lvl with.

    TRIBBLE%^$$^ the other genres

Fact- losing makes a game a game

Fact- They should have bridge crew die

    Fact- death, a fact

    Fact- Plasma- oh, wrong thread

the evidence is clear- they stated "a different non time penalty death thing" i say you should get scars and get demoted and be given a crappy ship and terrible crew members with the worst abilities

    art from adversity

    this is the superior

To add some drama and above all to discourage charge-die-respawn-charge-die-respawn zerg tactics... i.e. to reward players who use teamwork and higher brain functions rather than just twitch.

a death penalty doesn't reward anyone, and only discourages actual playing of the game, not in game play styles such as suiciding.

THe DP will either be so harsh that people instantly quit the first time they die in which case the pro DP will be happy- which is unlikely.

or it will be so light or optional that it doesn't affect anyone at all and is at worst a minor annoyance, in which case the pro DP will still be unhappy.

either way the rest of the playerbase are going to be annoyed to some extent.

Why would anyone want a death penalty...

PVE'er "So I can go straight back into the same fight and have an even greater chance of dying!"
PVP'er "So I stand an even greater chance of kicking your butt as soon as you respawn!"

    need I say more?

While i do not support a stupid DP the currant system pretty much rewards you for dying, sorry guys but a free heal to max HP's and shields and a removal of negative effects is just not how failing should effect you..

    PS::p.

In Cities a death's worth of debt indoors is erased three mobs later on an 8 man team. Cities also has patrol xp so if you log out with debt patrol xp will erase it at the rate of one bar per 24 hours.

Wow, you must only play 3 video games...

Ever play a mario game? Oh you're just running along, giant sized, shooting fireballs..... oh noes! a turtle hit me... now i'm small and weaponless.

And ANY multiplayer fps game strips you of all the weapons you've picked up - halo, C.O.D., unreal.

Ever play any of the GTA games? Jacking a car... OH NOES! DA POLICE - money and weapons taken from you after you get out of da slammer!

You must only play Hello Kitty:Island of Adventure...

Never dare a forum to come up with examples to go against your theory, you..... will....... fail......

Not how I see it. What it would do is motivate people to play as it blowing up actually mattered at all... so yes, you need to say more.
