I would like to be self sufficient in researching. Im a science officer and would like to do research to upgrade my armor like captain janeway did on voyager she made her ship anti borg. implative armor, special implative regenerator, her own special character sheild watch the last episode on voyager you'll see what my question really means.
to get to the point is I like to see researching station on my ship don't matter what kind of ship since im a science officer where i go is where a station will get replace I would replace the tactic station but still have an officer just that then you will have to give my tactic officer the ablility to train my crew for combat effiency to help repair hull, shields, engine power.
This is just an idea for AWESOME CONTenT in the NEAR Future. Thanks you cryptic and i know your on top of things. i just can't wait for more content i rate this game at FOUR STARS to go boldy go where no content has gone created before.

It was "ablative" armor.
Ablate: to remove or destroy especially by cutting, abrading, vaporizing, or evaporating.
From my point of view, what you are suggesting is what you do basically every time you add skills to point. You are researching to improve that skill. Now, to do so to create a better, stronger, faster, tool -- that's an interesting concenpt. But I don't see it becoming adopted. Research is something you do, theoretically, endlessly. So if your research is improving something then you could improve it endlessly.
Now they could put something in place that says for each level you research an item moves from Common, to Uncommon, to Rare, to Very Rare -- but I think they'd need more levels or would make the amount of research needed self-defeating.

Sure. But what you're describing is a crafting system. And you don't have to be a Science Officer to craft.
Consider the example you gave. That's not science. That's application of research, sure, but if you're building things, it's engineering. And it's the creation of weaponry, which is tactical.
So what you want is crafting for everyone. Being a Science Officer doesn't make you a special research and development bunny.
And crafting already exists in the game. Granted, the Memory Alpha crafting system is pretty damn lousy, and I take it you don't like what we have right now. Fine. But improvements to the crafting system will be released next month (dev post here - scroll down to the 'in development' list).
Granted, we have no idea how major the crafting overhaul will be. I'm guessing it won't be a huge change. But we'll see. I'd reserve judgement until then.
Well, in game terms, the developers need to put you in situations where you come into contact with other players, so frankly functions like this probably should be centralized. Story-wise, the research probably requires specialized equipment not available on a starship.
What I personally would like to see is the researchers passing out schematics in exchange for data, which we the can bring to our chief engineers (BO) on the bridge for final construction. I think that would make the whole process fit the storyspace better.

Nor is research always something that leads to technological development. That's a false connection. I doubt Janeway personally created all that technology. I assumed, if anything, they were just projects she supervised as an Admiral.
Science officers in Star Trek are consistently depicted as being very technically capable, yes, but their role in narrative is generally to provide theoretical explanations. Not to build stuff.

Actually, if you read the results of the first player survey I would suspect the overhaul to the crafting system will be fairly significant. Memory Alpha received the highest score for Least Liked (34%) feature and the lowest score for Most Liked (0%) feature. That is a very powerful combination.
The Voyager was a "hero" ship. Come on dudes. You play at least day-to-day officers.
Granted, most people act like they are flying the Enterprise or the Voyager...
But that shouldnt be the sense of the whole game...
Wow having ablative armor in Game is neat. Your ship magically transforms into a tank. And how long will it take until everyone uses it?
Its already enough to see lots of people who run around like G-Man with their uber kits and heavy body armor...

Just my $0.02.

Oh sweet, they're working on sitting in chairs.
