My thoughts on the lifers vs. the monthers

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
As I sit here in my private zone that looks graphically fantastic with my feet propped up on the captain's table, fiddling with my lifer's com badge and glancing at my blue forum title I start to wonder...

Yes, our initial "bet" of $240 to cryptic that the game wouldn't tank in less than two years gave them some immense starting capital but it's the people that pay month to month that truely have the power.

We spoke to cryptic with our wallets that "we believe in your future" but the current montly subscribers speak louder with their wallets that "we believe in you now". Aside from a few $20 here or $10 there in the item shop, it's the monthers that will continue to fund cryptic in the long term.

It's great that we are getting some "thank you" gifts but you need to come up with a program that rewards the monthers for sticking around. They are the ones that you have to "sell" on a monthly basis.

We no longer have a vote.

    I can agree with this.

I can support the monthers and annuals in getting things too, just don't try to take mine away.

If I would have had the money for it I would have bought the lifetime sub as well, but thanks to my not-so-big wallet I'm "merely" a monther now.

I have no problem with the perks that were added for the lifers, in fact I really like the idea. But I also wouldn't mind if there would be some small "gifts" now and then for the monthers as well.
Nothing grand, just a little "thank you" in-game and / or in the forum, like some sort of "veteran" status for paying & playing the game over X amount of time.

On the other hand, getting basically what I pay for is usually more than enough for me, I don't NEED extra fluff added in - though I most certainly wouldn't mind :D .

My thoughts on the 'lifers and the monthers' is that one group paid their money up front and another group pay theirs month to month.

Shocking, I know... but there it is. I said it.

    its ok so far

seroius question to the lifers...is it enough for you ?`or you expect more of these things at the next update..?
i mean some of you...want cpt table events with picard...somer others playable androids for lifers...

is it enough for you or you want more of these things ?
and what do you think happens to the 2 class player base we will have then for sure ?

dont be greedy...because...a 2 or 3 class player base...will break the community much more than funny death penatly freaking discussions...

lifers money...is the fundament to get this game alive
monthers money hold it alive...so dont be too greedy against the monthers...i beg you

and please dont tell eeverytime you trust the game more than others...im here since open beta...buyd headstart...so im trust the game too...

You're not "merely" an anything, DK. I really think some of that thought process is what is stirring so much resentment among non-lifers. (No, I'm not scolding you, just voicing a thought.)

I don't, for one second, feel any better or any worse than other players in the game. I don't respect anyone less because they aren't lifetime. It is funny though. DK's statement about being "merely" kind of reminded me of the abortion debate.

"Is a non lifer the same as a lifer, just not out of the womb yet?"

Would you be opposed to us getting the same things as monthers and annuals if, and verified by a minimal monthly login timer, we remained active within the game?

its too early for a veteran system yet, so maybe they have one planned, but havent announced it? i am sure they have something planned for "the masses", a veteran reward system is something that fits inline with their decision to award lifetime members.

if they do, now would probably be a good time to spring it on the players *nudges cryptic* because the epic whinging is just getting even more epic as time goes on since the patch hit :/

That sounds like a fair proposition tbh. Would have been a lifer myself, but finances can be a pain sometimes.

Okay. I try to stay away from polarizing threads. I find nothing good comes from my posts, in general, but am willing to give this another shot.

There seems to be a grave misinterpretation that all "monthers" were unwilling to put their proverbial "money where their mouth is". My contention is that several, if not most, loyal month-paying STO players did not have the funds to pay for a lifetime membership. Cryptic ran a limited promotion for Lifetime Subs at a reduced price with some intriguing perks. I could not afford to purchase said promotion, despite my desire to do so. Feed the baby, or buy an sto LS... It should also be noted that I play on a computer that runs below sys reqs (and pretty poorly I might add) because I enjoy the game but can not afford a new setup. We are in the worst recession since the Great Depression, I'm sure I'm not alone. I support STO every month because I COULD NOT support them up front. Posts like this paint Lifers as fattened, spoiled children that threw a fit in the middle of their living room until mother and father purchased their sub for them. Now they gloat and persecute those that were not so fortunate.

    So lets make a deal.

Come on guys. We are all here for the same reason. To revel in our geekdom. Stop with the "na-na-na-nana" threads, and we'll stop thinking of you as a group of "Trelane's" ;)

Since I have not specifically posted about this subject in one of the previous threads, I shall do so here. At this point I can safely say I believe STO would be a good value for my money if I were to purchase a Lifetime Subscription, so it's not a question of personal finances or the will to make the choice.

My opinion about Lifetime Subscriptions for Online Games in general is that they are bad for Developers / Publishers.... which in turn is then bad long term for Players as a whole.

Sure, the money from Lifetime Subs initially helps a Developer / Publisher, but like any other "pile of cash" it gets spent quickly (or usually does) and then a year or two later the Developer is seeking new ways to fund the MMO/Online game. Case in point is LotRO by Turbine... the Lifetime subs were great for Turbine's cashflow, however most "LotRO Lifer's" like me now know that Turbine's finances are not all that great, in part because there are quite a few Players like myself who can log into LotRO and play forever now without paying anything more ever again until the game is shutdown (Turbine has other issues ongoing I will not discuss them here).

Sure the Lifetime Subscription is great for me as a Player... but at what real cost to the MMO I love? A steady and consistant cashflow from the Players I believe is better for a MMO than a quick infusion of cash at the beginning and then a dwindling supply thereafter that must be compensated for. For the sake of LotRO and Turbine I wish I had simply chosen to pay a monthly sub as I feel it would have better served the overall good of LotRO in the future.

THIS is why I will never purchase a Lifetime Subscription for STO or for any other MMO from now on. I feel Lifetime Subs are unwise financially for a MMO longterm, botth for the Developer / Publisher and the Players.... and MMOs are all about longterm. As much as I find a monthly Sub to be a pain for myself, I feel it is best for STO as a whole.

As for the STO Lifer Rewards... enjoy them, I am very happy to see Cryptic rewarding all of you for the faith you demonstrated by purchasing your lifetime Subs. Perhaps in two years some of us consistent monthly Subscribers will also qualify for rewards as well.

As for whether one group of Players is more loved or privileged..... I say balderdash.... we are all Players of STO, that is what matters. I consider all Players worthy of common courtesy and respect. All I wish is to be judged according to my skill as a Player and how well I interact with other Players while I play STO.

I'm down for monthers and annuals getting rewards, but I want some too. This is NOT saying that I want continued "lifer" gifts to boot. Just that, if I'm active, say 60 hours monthly to make it even numbers, I feel that I should get rewards too. "Lifers" who aren't active shouldn't be eligible for continued "loyalty" gifting.

I disagree with the OP. How you subscribed is of no consequence whether it be life sub, yearly, monthly, or whatever. If you sub in anyway you do get a vote. All voices should be heard if you are paying/paid in anyway and still subbed to log on.

You forgot the part where they did it off the clock, and because no one asked.
It was, and is, a fantastic gesture on their part.
And it was blown way out of proportion.
Like Q's son was in that one new episode.
    But it was entertaining.

No arguments from me at all.

My personal opinion is that there really is no difference someone who paid the lifetime fee up front or someone who shells out the monthly fee.

My thought is there is no "Lifers" vs. "Monthers". There's just hundreds of thousands of Trekkies. Let's have fun playing Star Trek together, not argue about whether Sneetches with stars on thars are superior to Sneetches without stars upon thars.

As a lifer, I'm 100% in support of veteran/yearly rewards... so long as lifers get the things they do as well. Perks needs to start with lifers, as the premium part of the playerbase, and then trickle down to others where appropriate.

If you truly feel this way, all you have to do is stop playing; you'll no longer get anything. Let everybody else enjoy the many nice things we've all gotten, including the "thank you" cosmetic widgets many different people have gotten for going above and beyond in one way or another.

When somebody holds a door open for you, do you say "thank you"? Isn't that unfair to the 7 billion people who didn't hold the door for you?

Sad, but true. Giving someone something that another can't have creates division. I'm a lifer and I feel like I live on "the other side of the tracks" now. They can take my lifer perks away if it makes everyone happy.

This really should be the end of the lifetime sub perks. The previous perks were limited time only so people who bought a lts after the initial preorder deadline didn't get anything. Now, anyone who buys a LTS gets an exclusive social area, an exclusive ingame and forum title, an exclusive forum color and an exclusive costume piece and a lifetime sub. i think that's more than enough for your $300. Veteran rewards for all players sure, further bonuses for LTS only just because they feel entitled? No,.

I don't want new things. I want the things that don't work fixed. I want the things that should have existed from the start implemented. It would also be nice to be able to group reliably regardless of the mission type or whatever else is TRIBBLE the grouping up. Half of the game they implemented is pure TRIBBLE... that's what they need to be working on.

See ... this is unfair ... you pair your 20+ month / lifer sub ... everyone else pays monthly and yet you want now what they have ...

Funny how the arguement doesn't work the opposite way since us who pay monthly now pay for everything.

*sigh* this is a defunct arguement that will never be resolved unless gm's get involved ... everyone has valid points and we keep throwing them around and yet they wont chirp up and throw in their thoughts or options or opions ...

all a dead cause now for subs
