Space Combat
Its actually very depressing coming into the Game Play Forums and see all the posts that basically have nothing to do with game play when most of us have not seen a game run and play this poorly in a decade.
Game Play Suggestions:
*Make hand held phasers and weapons shoot only 2 meters.
That would just be stupid right?
Well to many of us this is what the equivalent of Space Combat looks like in STO. Even on some of these smaller maps there is approximately 1,100,000 square kilometers of area on them. Yet, the effective combat range of a star ship [which are all almost incorrectly sized or scaled correctly] is 10 kilometers.
[Is there any chance at all that Interplay and 14degrees East is going to sue Cryptic for basically taking there game Starfleet Command released in 1999, and placing the exact same combat model [and AI apparently] in STO?]
Space Combat
*Extending the combat range for start ships in STO would greatly increase the actual feel of a Star Trek game.
*Varying the ranges of weaponry would greatly increase the actual feel of a Star Trek game.
*Correcting the number of actual weapons [which any 8 year old can goggle] on each of these star ships would greatly increase the Star Trek feel of the game and actually fix some balance issues as people for decades have been doing this long before you even had this thought.
*Decreasing and increasing the rate of fire along with extended ranges would greatly increase the feel of an actual Star Trek game and fix some balance issues.
*Strengthen the Shields so space combat is not over in two seconds [even at close ranges] along with the extended gun and varied gun ranges, and rates of fire; would greatly increase the Star Trek feel to the game.
From what I have seen and played of the game effective combat ranges and even argo ranges could be set to 30kilometers without too many negative effects requiring editing of AI positions. Try 20kiloeters what could it hurt as at this point anything is better than nothing.
Biggest question many of us have about Cryptic and STO is why you are basically using a game format from 1999 to represent Space combat. Its almost directly right out of Starfleet Command including the use of mod weapons.
Map Utilization-
Doing all of the above will, and would actually allow for Cryptic and the players themselves to utilize most of [these really small] maps you are using.
*Overall, this would allow for greater creativity when creating missions for players and give a more Star Trek feel to the game. Well, least for those who still dont wake up early to watch Saturday morning cartoons anyway.
